THE UK is expected today to be set a target of generating 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
The European Union has agreed to a renewable target of 20 per cent and will outline today how this will be shared out among member states.

A spokesman for the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, formerly the DTI, said: "It is going to mean a step-change in how we generate our power."

The European Commission has estimated this will cost about £45 billion a year, but save just over that amount in reduced energy imports and pollution clean-up costs, while also helping to prevent climate change.

Using current technology and technology that will arrive by 2020, we can acheave a real 7% - 10%. This is without unreasonable subsidies, i.e. leaving some money left for schools and hospitals. This level would still be higher than the other main EU economies.

We can meet this 15% target but not until 2030, unless the govenment classifies imports as a part of this total.

So, why is the UK target of 15% described as "tough", when it is 5% below the EU target of 20%?

Its a shame that politicians make these targets amd not engineers.

It is indeed unfortunate that the sometimes useless politicians make these targetting announcements and get all the glory rather than the scientists, engineers, and other non-political experts/specialists but that is life.

But at least the targets are being formulated and hopefully acted upon in a timely manner.
