I'll wear mask to beat the Beijing Olympic smog, reveals Radcliffe

Published Date: 12 May 2008
BRITAIN'S top female distance runner, Paula Radcliffe, yesterday admitted she may wear a face mask at the Beijing Olympics this summer – but not while competing.
The athlete had so far played down the fears over pollution in the Chinese capital, saying previously that she thought heat and humidity would be the main problems.

But yesterday, the 34-year-old asthma sufferer told BBC Radio Five Live she was c
onsidering wearing a mask while walking around the city.

Radcliffe, the world record-holder in the women's marathon, said: "I think the biggest factor is going to be runny eyes, runny nose and sore throat after the event – and if things go according to plan in the race, I don't particularly care. The biggest thing for me is to make sure my asthma is under control – which it is – and minimise the effects of pollution in the lead-up to the race.

"We have looked at using these masks to minimise pollution effects as you're just walking around but it's not something you'd think about racing in."

However, the runner, who last year won the New York marathon less than ten months after giving birth to her daughter Isla, said she thought the pollution debate needed to be broadened out.

"I think elements that need to be focused on and thought about more are the heat and humidity. They are things you can do more to prepare for as well.

"I have competed in polluted places before – Atlanta was pretty polluted and Athens wasn't the most unpolluted."

Her announcement comes just weeks after Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie, the world record-holder in the men's marathon – and also an asthma sufferer – decided not to run the 42km race saying the pollution in China was a threat to his health.

It also follows a warning from the president of the International Olympic Committee that some events at the Games could be affected by the high levels of pollution.

Jacques Rogge said the air quality in the Chinese capital could be "problematic" for events lasting over an hour.

He suggested events such as the marathon, road cycling, triathlon, open-water swimming and race walking could be postponed if the effects of the air pollution were exacerbated by the weather.

However, Asthma UK said it was unsure exactly how useful wearing masks would be for asthma sufferers.

In the interview, Radcliffe also backed calls for the use and supply of drugs in sport to be made a criminal offence.

She said: "It does need governments to step in now, increase funding into anti-doping and increase the deterrent factor."

Olympic legend Carl Lewis also recently called on governments to co-ordinate a drive to make the use of banned substances illegal.

"I have competed in polluted places before – Atlanta was pretty polluted ..."

Well said, Paula. Routine China-bashers like the mercifully absent slavering GC conveniently ignore just how badly polluted American cities are. (I know, I've been, seen and choked.) This self-imposed blindness enables them to hurl indiscriminate insults elsewhere according to their preferred prejudice.

Paula Radcliffe is (and always has been) a sparkling diamond among a not too admirable crowd of athletics cheats. Good luck, lass, you deserve it.

Seriously, don't you get tired of spouting your endlessly tiresome mantra? What is your rationale for this never-ending tirade against a nation of blameless people? Governments worldwide are to be condemned or even faintly praised. Why don't you lay off the Chinese people instead of constantly p!ssing in the wind?

You are clearly not a totally stupid person, but you might get a smidgen of respect if you tempered your constant barbs with a bit of proven knowledge instead of the predictable blinkered blitz.

#1 Fanling,
It's sure nice to see a clear and selfthinker like you come online, and having the open mind that you have.
No, China is not perfect, but it is trying its best against all odds, those odds include the west forever badgering us, a massive population to look after and bring up to western standards, and trying to overcome environmental concerns when producing so many goods in high demand by the west. Than we have that Tibet issue that is giving us an unfair black eye, for most of Tibetans are perfectly happy to be part of China, for their living conditions have drasticall improved under the Chinese government.

#2 Guga ll,
Your intense hatred for the Chinese government clouds any reasonable thought, and you revel in smearing our country of China at every chance you get.
You need to realize that we too are people, and can't be held responsible for the actions of a few, if indeed your accusations of our government are true.
Living here in China I've never experienced or seen any of your accusations, and me living here gives me a far clearer picture than the one you paint of China. I would not have settled down here and chosen to live out my life here if things are the way you claim they are. Until you set foot in this great country, you better learn not to bad mouth it, for you have no clue as to what you're talking about. You are stuck on using the term gangster government, that would apply much more to your government and that of the USA, with their present illegal occupation of Iraq and the countless number of people dying and suffering on account of that illegal occupation.

As someone who has lived, loved and worked in China for many years I am in the privileged position to make a credible assessment based on ongoing first-hand knowledge. An opinion that is sadly lacking by some of the more vociferous unenlightened posters on here.

To compare - I spent an unpleasant month recently in a central European country (not Switzerland!), whose language I had learnt sufficiently to communicate in everyday terms. I had a rotten lousy time there with surly natives who just would not accommodate a foreigner - any foreigner. Stark constrast to the China I know.

It's so easy for any of us to emotively prattle and continually emptily to condemn without any actual experience of what we might be shouting about. Historical information is a start, but that can be turned on its head to suit the argument. Personal experience goes a long way towards proving the point.

#3 Fanling & #4 Skidmark.

I have no problem with the ordinary Chinese people, as you well know. My problem is with your gangster government, and their evil and malign treatment of the people of Tibet, the Uighirs and the likes of the Falun Gong. I don't need to repeat all the things thay have done or the mass murders and tortures they have committed, they are all well documented.

Incidentally, I have lived and worked in China, and in many parts of Asia, particularly South East Asia, so I do know what the Chinese people are like. As I said, I am not against them, but your fascist, undemocratic and dictatorial gangster government.

Also, Skidmark, if you had bothered reading any of my posts on matters such as the English government, or the current American government, and their illegal activities, you would know what I think of them and their war criminal leaders; including what I think of the Stalinist, totalitarian control freak government of Maggie Broon.

On another matter Skidmark, you owe me an apology for your maniacal rant the other day where, because of your blind hatred of anything Western, you attacked me due to your obvious lack of understanding of the word "bairn", and your usual knee-jerk reactions. I doubt whether you are man enough to give me an apology though.

Surprised you remained there for a month if it was that bad unless you were there on business.

My daughter developed asthma in Taipei, Taiwan and everyone there said that mainland China and Hong Kong were much worse. Until you have experienced the stench in cities like Taipei, you really have no idea what you're letting your body in for.

If Paula Ratcliff decides to harm herself attending these Olympics then that is a matter for her. Silly Woman.
Fannling. Having returned from Atlanta not too long ago I can attest to the fact that the air is good in the city and surrounding area, so god knows where she got that from.
The issue is that Beijing undertook to clean the air BEFORE the Olympics and has resolutelly not done so, like so many other promises.
Guga11. I doubt if you will recieve any appology from this idiot. He is symtematic of the "wind up and go" mentality of so many mouthpieces on here these days, but good luck never the less.
Hi Cankers, keeping well? I see Postcrap has been allowed back on, so perhaps the re-programming has been completed. I wait with anticipation.... NOT.

#7 Guga ll,
I need not apologize for taking a run at you, as to the fact that I have already explained to you why I did that, if you did not read that, that's your problem. You deserved what I said to you and about you for the simple fact that you constantly run China into the ground.
As for your claim about having lived and worked in China, that must have been a very long time ago, for you keep on ranting and raving that we don't have internet access here, which outdates you pretty bad buddy.
Your constant talk of boycotting China will only hurt the innocent citizens of China, so it is clear that you hate the Chinese people.

Postcrap. Once again short on the facts. The Panchen Lama was the earthly embodyment of god to his people, which the Chinese authorities decided to remove. Hoping that the religious element would go away. He was replaced by a Chinese puppet. How dare they!
How do you register the wellbeing of a region if you remove a religious artifact, with no respect I suggest. How about the well being of the little boy as was, or have China dealt with him as they do with others who dont conform?
Stop being an idiot and think before you post. Oh and appologise to Guga.

#21 Skidmark.

"the Panchen Lama was nothing but a political pawn and had to be removed".

Yes indeed, what is the life of one little six year old boy, taken away and murdered by the gangster Chinese government, and replaced with one of their own lickspittle running dogs.

If you, Skidmark, care so little for the life of a six year old child, it shows just how loathsome you really are.

I didn't expect an apology from you as, after all, you'd lose face by admitting that you are a fool and an idiot, as well as being a mere pawn of the gangster Chinese government.

I never denied that they have the Internet in China. What I said was that only party cadres, and running dogs like yourself have full access to all sites. You may have noticed the story by a Hootsmon reporter the other week, pointing out that the BBC sites were blocked whenever they had a story about the Gangster Olympics, and the Hootsmon site was similarly blocked.

The very fact that both you and Mushy Marrow (The Rabid Rabbit) appear to have unfettered access only proves that you are paid cadres and lickspittles of your gangster government. You are no better than a Gan Ping.

I fear for Paula Radcliffe's health and wish that she would take the route followed by Haile Gebrselassie (also an asthma sufferer).

While I've nothing to add to the stimulating and enlightened debate going on above (/sarcasm off), I do wonder about athletes with bronchial problems competing in any large city know to have heavily-polluted air.

I am pretty sure as to who is using my name at post #21, but I won't mention any names.
That's the third time that I'm aware of somebody using my name, but if you look closely, my ID part that reads Chongching, China, does not come up as bold print, whereas the three posts, including #21, does.
I have reported this to the Scotsman, and they are looking into it, for you have registered with them and need to sign in before leaving a comment. You are as low as they come, hiding behind my name and slandering my name, and the Scotsman is not taking it lightly, I'm sure of that, for their name and reputation is at stake here as well.

Hi Cankers. It brings me to the same conclusion that you have. To think they complain and call you a troll, pots and kettles here I think.
By the way, saw an interesting article the other day which suggests that they are now making jeans from nettles. I dont suppose this is you, as your sandpaper undies and these jeans would go down a storm with the under utilised males?

Hi Biker, absolutely, they are the masters of their own handiwork and blame it on others!

Jeans from nettles eh?.....sounds like something the CCP would come up with...to 're-educate' nasty citizens that have fallen by the wayside..heh heh heh...you are made to put them on and then they herd you all into the disco chamber...push of a button and the dazzling disco ball drops down...flick of a switch and the music comes on...everybody must line dance....heh heh he...the 'Time Warp' in your nettle troosers eh?....oh aye that'd 're-educate' me awrite!!

Although I did buy a cardigan made from bamboo recently!!
