THE recent convulsions in the Cabinet demonstrate what can happen when personal relations turn sour. It occurs in every walk of life.
But football shares politics' capacity for commanding attention and discussion about Hibs' latest managerial search has been dominated by a heavily rumoured problem which exists between Easter Road chairman Rod Petrie and John Hughes, one that has no
t been publicly acknowledged by either party.

Paul Kane, who attended both primary and secondary school with Hughes, estimates that as many as 70 per cent of Hibs supporters want Hughes to succeed Mixu Paatelainen, who left the club last week. But this weight of numbers could yet face an immovable force in Petrie. "As far as I know there is not a problem between John Hughes and Rod Petrie," says Kane, the former Hibs player and fervent fan. "If there is a problem it is between Rod Petrie and John Hughes."

Hibs supporters fear this alleged rift could present an obstruction to Hughes returning to Easter Road, though the Falkirk manager has also been linked with Blackpool and Swansea. Sheer ambition could steer Hughes away from his boyhood heroes, whatever the state of his relationship with Petrie. He has talked often of a long-held desire to work in England, although in former club Swansea's case he would have to tailor this wish to include south Wales. But since he began earning his managerial spurs with Falkirk, Hughes has always featured high in the list of candidates when the Easter Road position has come up. Despite a steadily improving CV he has been passed over on three previous occasions. If he is ignored again now, it would be hard to dismiss the claim Hughes is for some reason persona non grata at Easter Road.

Pat Stanton has been in and around Easter Road as often as anyone and has heard the stories that currently dominate conversation between fans. "Knowing both Rod Petrie and John Hughes personally I am certain they are not petty men," he says. "If they felt it was the right thing for the club I am sure they would bury any hatchet."

Stanton, who as well as skippering Hibs also managed the side, does stress that it is vital there is a good working relationship between manager and chairman. "In my experience it is the most important relationship at any club," he says. "If there is a problem they would need to leave it to one side otherwise the club would suffer.

"But you have to accept that at every club there will be people you won't be sending Christmas cards to. You have a job to do and you get on with it. It's the same on a building site, or in an office."

He adds: "With John you get what you get. Rod is a quieter, private man."

These opposites have not attracted each other yet. The reason for any suggested distance between two men who have Hibernian at heart is the subject of much speculation on internet forum messageboards.

It is more likely that a cool relationship dates back to Hughes' playing days at Hibs, when he was a typically vocal member of the first-team squad and Petrie had the role of managing director. It is claimed Hughes, who was captain of the side, also wore a metaphorical armband around the club, constantly pestering Petrie on behalf of the players. No-one can dispute that he was left unhappy when told he was being released in 2000. At the age of 35, and with manager Alex McLeish keen to look to the future, it could not have been unexpected, but Hughes admitted the news took some time to digest. He noted that even McLeish would agree he was still among the fittest players at the club.

"I pride myself on my fitness and I still have another good couple of years left in me," he said at the time. "But, football being football, things change and I have to move on.

"I don't hold any grudges. I enjoy working with Alex McLeish and wish him and all the players all the best for the future."

He did, however, acknowledge that his performance in his last appearance for the club, against Motherwell, had not been all it might have been.

"My head was not right but that was no excuse for the performance I gave," he said. "I apologised to one or two of the boys after the game for it. I've taken the news very hard. I'm a local boy who managed to live the dream."

Kane also lived the dream of playing for Hibs and he urged both men to forget the past for the good of the club. "They should just shake hands and get on with it," he said. "Hibs are the most important thing. They always have been."

70% of Hibs fans want Hughes as manager?
Wonder where Paul Kane got that figure from? It's certainly not consistent with polls on fans websites. A case perhaps of Kane wanting his old pal to get the job rather than looking at what is in Hibs best interests?

Agreed, I hope we have enough ambition to look further afeild.

I also agree that John Hughes wouldn't be on my list. He's too vocal for his own good and the last thing we need is public venting by anyone. It's not worth the hassle to chance it.

I'm for a fresh face rather than the old ones which are being touted, as they often end in disaster. A man with a clean slate and no baggage would best fit our needs.

Just make sure that whoever it is, he knows how to produce attractive football again. It's been sorely missed by the fans.

I've not met anyone who is against John Hughes becoming manager. He is certainly my first choice.

PS - I've been harping on about the problems that we've had in appointing ex-players. If you look back, we've got a pretty bad track record in going down this line. However.....

I have a sneaky wee feeling about Yogi. As a man and a manager he's grown enormously over the last two or three years. He speaks and conducts himself far, far better than he did and he's certainly more educated in the game now.

His biggest plus point though is that he now has a proven track record of nurturing and bringing through young players. And we certainly have a significant amount of those waiting in the wings at ER......

Not for me, have to say it would not inspire me. The praise Stockport fans have for Gannon seems to point to him as a good bet. That is if he's even interested in the job.

#1 certainly most of the Hobos I know want Hughes. I wouldn't pay attention to webchats or forums. Most of Hobo's Net posters are ex-pats who remember the Famous Five or Turnbulls Tornados. Hardly any seem to be regular supporters e.g. Blackpool Hibs, Vancouver Hibs, Kev in Prague

Hardly representative

At least on Kickback, most of us are active fans

Any decent journalist writing a story about a rift between Hughes & Petrie would surely do some investigating rather than just phone up Paul Kane and ask him if he knew about it?

Money for old rope this journo lark these days eh?

Alan, if you want to find out about the rift then either

a) Do some ruddy work and spend time investigating what went on

or

b) Do what Barry Anderson does and visit a fans website and take the info from their and publish it

Uninterested Spectator,

As a hearts fan i want hughes to get the job for two reasons:

1. Look back to the beginning of last season and hughes was telling everyone who would listen (and a lot who didn't care) how is young side, full of flair and verve were going to be a top six side. Once he had added a few older heads the hollow noise from hughes mouth became even louder!

Falkirk were easily the worst spl side last season, a cup semi and final can't disguise the poor play, tactics and general disarray of falkirks play.

2. The way hibs supporters treat former players who return as managers is joke. The last two (Collins and Mixu) were lauded upon their return then next minute the savage attacks began. No time given to the manager to settle in, his signings derided before they had kicked a ball, and the abuse that rained down from the stands was awful.

So in the last 10 years hibs fans abuse has got rid of Sauzee, Collins, Mixu and looking further back Stanton's head was cut off by the vile hibs support. How proud, how proud....

Yogi for me also!
Beware of looking for the new TM. (at the risk of being a heretic, was he really that good or are we all misty eyed?).
Gannon seems to have no experience in bringing through youth and thats what the job now requires.

Alan Patutullo needs to go out and do some real reporting. I know of only a small percentage wanting yogi. If Kane and Patutullo want Hughes they must want Hibs to fail because that's what would happen.

Sorry "Kano" you need to speak to the punters in the stands .
More like 40% from what I hear.
Why another ex player ? It hasn't worked this past few times so lets have a bit of ambition

what a load of old toot!

"So in the last 10 years hibs fans abuse has got rid of Sauzee, Collins, Mixu."

i think you'll find that truly awful results did for franck, collins walked after losing the dressing room and things were getting a bit sticky and mixu got his jotters for myriad reasons but what sealed his fate was woeful season ticket sales due to the awful football he presided over.

For an uninterested spectator you've written quite a lot about, when all's said and done, what isn't your subject.

Never mind, all are welcome. Even someone whose grasp of events more than a couple of months ago is shaky, to say the least.

Are you really saying that the Hibs support did not give JC a decent amount of time before some fans started criticising? Even when he left most fans were still on his side.

Fans abuse did not get rid of Sauzee. The board had a panic attack and sacked him. Hibs fans were still hero-worshipping Sauzee then, as they do now.

If you want to know about Pat Stantons time as Hibs manager I would recomment Alan Roughs entertaining biography. Suffice to say that your remarks on this are rubbish.

John Hughes did not boast about getting into the top six. He stated that that was his target. Nothing more.

All in all you've managed to get everything wrong haven't you?

Thanks for your' interest but you'd be better writing about a subject you know something about.

Just as well you're already in hell as such heresy will not be tolerated. But seriously though, who can blame us for beatifying TM after the gash we've had to endure this season?
24

Private Pike,

What would that subject be? "A comprehensive history of Hearts over the last six weeks.".

Incidently, no true Hearts fan would be uninterested in who Hibs appoint as their manager.

Apparently Hearts fans don't care about Hibs, it's us that are obsessed with their team.

Incidentally, where are all the feejits today?

Remember I said "True Hearts Fan". Not this guy who's an "uninterested spectator." He gave his game way when he wrote about the "Vile Hibs support".

Never mind. At least he's literate and that puts him a couple of steps up on the usual half-wits we get on here. Hope I've not frightened him away.

Troy Tempest,

I think Hughes is an excellent manager but a move to England would probably do him more good than staying in Scotland. Swansea would be perfect for him I think. But even Blackpool would be a good move for him, he's the sort of guy that seems to thrive on a challenge. What I like about him is that his teams always pass the ball. Somebody said Falkirk were the worst team in SPL. Erm, I think you mean Inverness? Also, have you watched St. Mirren or Hamilton recently?! Please watch a replay of the cup final!

Yogi seems a perfect fit for Hibs but judging by posts on here its 50:50. He's got to be a better bet than Paatalinen who's team produced dross on a consistent basis despite having some good individuals like Riordan, Fletcher and Jones.

The others: Paul Simpson is a good manager, he got Carlisle playing really well and now Shrewsbury are decent because of him too. Calderwood turned Forest into an inert bore, he's from the Craig Brown school of management, despite promotion from L1 the fans hated him. He would be a disaster for Hibs. Don't know much about the other candidates.

Good luck finding the right man! Whoever he is, please stop signing mediocrity like Rosa. Frittering all those big transfer fees away.. better off investing in one or two good Scottish players who might improve.
29

Abe Fruman,

05/06/2009 11:45:34
Cheers Troy, good post. Sadly it's refreshing for someone to come on and actually talk about about football as opposed to just showing how thick they are.

Regarding Rosa, I think you're being a wee bit unfair but suffice to say due to the Buffoon's ineptitude we had NO ONE in midfield so he was a welcome addition at the time.
30

Troy Tempest,

05/06/2009 12:49:50
Fair enough. However Hibs could do better picking up a decent midfielder from div 1. For example Harkins at Partick being touted for 100-200k. He's a decent player with a bit of skill and intelligence (a rarity in any flight of Scottish football), and will improve but instead they signed Rosa. Surely Rosa would cost more in wages due to the fact that he played for Wolves before his move plus he was an international. Why not sign Harkins - at least they would get a good fee for him if he was a spectacular success. Its the same with Johansson - money frittered away needlessly (another striker - like Hibs don't have enough good strikers?! Well past his best as well!).

There is some talent in div 1 (OK - not a huge amount but there is some!) but it managers won't look there, seems strange to me. Even in div 2 - Queens Park left back Douglas is a good player but top flight teams prefer to sign non-entities like Mo Camara. Why?!

PS who is Buffoon (excuse my ignorance)?

Neutral Observer,

Just got back home from a day of meetings and read some quite good posts for a change. Had to laugh at #30 though. Who is Buffon? I think that used to be the Hibs goalkeeper's name But he changed it by deed Pole.
32

Neutral Observer,

05/06/2009 17:53:47
Sorry BUFFOON. I am only joking about the Hibs keeper, Buffoon is Italian and the most expensive goalkeeper ever. Plays for Juventus.
