AYR United tightened their grip on second place in the Second Division with a crucial victory over promotion rivals Brechin City.

The hosts suffered a blow after only four minutes when centre-half David White broke his leg a challenge with Ryan Stevenson.

On 18 minutes a header from Ayr's Martyn Campbell was cleared off the line by Charlie King, and just four minutes later King cleared off the line again, this time from a Scott Walker header.

On the stroke of half-time Brechin's Darren Smith forced a save from Stephen Grindlay and the

deadlock was broken when David Gormley crossed for Bryan Prunty to flick home, punishing some slack defending by the home side.

Brechin: Nelson, Walker, Ward, White (Murie 9), Dyer, King (Byers 86), Janczyk, Nimmo (Diack 73), Darren Smith, Twigg, Baird. Subs not used: Fusco, Scott.

Ayr: Grindlay, Keenan, Walker, Martin Campbell, Dempsie, Borris (Weaver 47), Stevenson, Aitken, Easton (Agnew 36), Prunty (Williams 75), Gormley. Subs not used: Henderson, Stewart.

Att: 548. Referee: C Allan.
