I remember when this was reported in the news at the time. I also remember thinking that the reporters must have been wrong, surely no group would have committed such an act in the name of "their" religion.
The Taleban, a Muslim group, blew up the statues for being "anti-Muslim". This is the same Taleban who persecuted the inhabitants, a Shiite Muslim group.
I admit that I am no expert in religion, but surely to let your religion rule you to such an extent that you commit atrocities in its name is wrong in itself?
I must admit, it is hearing about acts such as this, and other persecutions carried out in the name of "Islam"; or where Muslim persecute Muslim for their own reasons; that instils fear in me as to the true aims of these Islamic fundamentalists.

Still, good luck with the statues. If there is a fund going, let the world know so we can donate.

Destruction of these statues is simply attrocious. Never mind your religion, who could not appreciate the labor and artistry that went in to them? Proves that the Islamic Fascists are true animals with no love for beauty or culture. I say this as a US Marine that met them in Iraq, and I agree with Derek, just tell me where to send the money! The world has gone mad when crimes like this can be dismissed so easily. These are a people that need conquering, just to preserve the rights of every other culture to live and create.
