Hang about. Are we forgetting that MEN can get breast cancer too? How much housework should they be doing?
I knew there was a reason that women should be doing the housework. Though keeping them on a chain that runs from the bedroom to the kitchen can chafe their ankles if your not careful.
1. None Diane , theres no proof that it helps prevent it....
This is Great News.
Must be a glitch in stats!
Don’t believe it. Women who work in the home have a 56% higher caner rate than women who work outside of the home due to increased exposure to household cleaning chemicals. (The one under your sink)
5) Probably true, but the article is about a specific cancer not the general case.Suppose it means I can continue smoking as I do most of the housework, one should cancel out the other.
@1none that's women work dummy
According to the news stories I've read so far, the study shows housework, but not other kinds of exercise, reduce breast cancer risk in pre-menopausal women. So, who are these women who aren't doing the housework? Who is doing their housework? The husband, the maid, or nobody? It's probably not the husband, so my guess is that the maid is doing it, and this study's findings are related to income, not exercise.
Obviously Dr. Walker's last quote shows his/her lack of doing housework. There's nothing simple about it unless someone else is doing it for you. I can think of much better and enjoyable activities to cut the risk. Hopefully women are smart enough not to buy this information. Who paid for this study?
It sounds to me like the result of the study is that if you exercise you lower your risk ... so why did they choose housework as the form of exercise??
I think Mia has hit the nail. Incidence of breast cancer is known to be higher in higher income groups, although death rates are lower. In any case, one factor cannot be detached from the many many others! Its clear that some people did not think beyond the box or look for what else it might represent. Need to learn to make links.Otherwise you come to simplistic conclusions.
I understand the more bedroom activity a man gets the lower his risk.
So, what is the breast cancer rate amoung maids....?
The news stories about what causes or prevents breast cancer get more and more ridiculous. Which chauvinist pig came up with this study? I wouldn't be surprised if the study was drug company sponsored to take the heat off them as their products i.e. the pill and HRT are shown to substantially increase a woman's risk of breast cancer. Incidentally it doesn't matter whether you eat healthily or exercise as there are countless women who have done both yet taken hormonal drugs and gotten cancer.
Jane Kirby wrote: "These results strengthen the consistency of findings about the protective role of *physical activity* on breast cancer risk."
So basically they did yet ANOTHER worthless study to confirm what we've already known for years: Sensible nutrition and moderate exercise to maintain a healthy weight and body. A sedentary and indulgent lifestyle carries other health risks besides breast cancer. Thou shalt not weigh more than thy refrigerator.
Hans Bittner discovered that not only women but House mice (Mus domesticus) are also prone to breast cancer, caused by infection with the mouse mammary tumour virus (MMTV or "Bittner virus").
I wonder...What would be a male's contribution toward housework? Liftin his leg so the lass can vacuum.
Branda
Yea, right... Next they are going to say that women who wash and wax their husband's car weekly have less cancer.
It simply had to be men who thought up this ridiculous theory.
If they could find enough men doing housework - I am sure they would find that it lowers the risk of testicular cancer as well. But who would bother spending money on that research?
This is just one more study where they've got it backward. BACKWARD.
They say that exercise -- in this case, housework --wards off breast cancer.
BUT what about this? If a woman (or anyone) is slowly getting sick . . . she'll feel less and less energetic. Less housework gets done.
Ergo. Women who are developing breast cancer will do less housework.
From a scientific view you can not avoid this disease, only lower the risk. You have probably lost loads of "housewife" readers along with good husbands who do base their opinions on intelligent scientific fact. Cancer is caused by a number of factors besides the one mentioned in the Scotsman, this is only tabloid junk. Bravo, a new low..
Just a thought.
"...The existence of regulatory food standards allowing up to two pellets of rodent excreta per pint of wheat confirm the presence of mice in the modern human food chain."UCSBwww.ia.ucsb.edu/pa/display.aspx?pkey=425
Nothing definitive it seems put perhaps enough *combined assaults* to send a low risk situation over the edge into the cancer zone: chronic alcohol consumption (inhibits ability to clear estrogen from the blood stream), folate and B9 deficiency, lifetime oral contraceptives followed by artificial *synthetic* hormone replacement, cosmetic/toiletry chemicals, house-cleaner chemicals, food and water chemicals, food and beverage plastics, high-fat diets (increase estrogens in the blood), genes, radiation, etc....
Low-fat diet and *natural* hormonal balance may be the key to unlocking the mysteries of breast cancer--for prostate cancer too. We still lack information concerning the importance of hormonal balance and associated complexities. I feel this is where funds and studies should be directed and less of this wasteful junk science.
BTW, "Dr Lesley Walker, of Cancer Research UK, which part-funded the study..." is a *female* research scientist and has a PhD in immunology. Pity that.
Just a thought.....hygiene???? Those that do more housework have cleaner, germ-free homes than those who don't clean? No simple answers I say. Statistics can be made to prove almost anything!
and I guess it follows that if men carry out the garbage frequently, clean the gutters, mow and rake the lawn, trim the hedge, do the heavy lifting, spend loving and quality time with their family, etc. they will have less frequency of cancer too? This is truly good news!
What we men have said all along - women and happier and now it seems healthier in the kitchen. Gawd bless them...
How does the cancer know if your a keep fit freak who employs a cleaner.
