Why is it the US feels it needs to store missles all over the world, especially after taking the huff when the Soviets wanted to do the same in Cuba?
Lets face it - this is the country with the monopoly on weapons of mass destruction!
So whilst Condo harbours her anti pinko anachronistic soviet hating, its worth remembering that her old enemy now supplies much of our gas, while we can happily manage without anything from her nation.

A slip of the tongue from Condi. I quiver.

Love poems for Condi? Not at this time in the morning. Pushkin?
3. "Suck"-=-McCrunchie
You may be aware of this: Remember the Cuban Missile Crises? So close to nuclear war all because those devilish Cubans were taking delivery of nukes from the 'soviets'. However, before all that, the USA had Nuke sites in Turkey pointed directly at Moscow.
Funny how we weren't told about that.
Approx 750 military bases around the world and many from the states on this site oppose the use of words like Hegemony and Empire.
It must be hard to keep up with who the new enemy is -- the other one being the enemy for so long.Who is the new one again?
The best nuclear shield Europe could have is to kick the US out of our countries! If we stopped lettnig them use us as military bases then we would be less of a target. Did 7/7 not teach us anything?
McMicrogal #6
The terrorists will hit us whether we are aligned with the US or not. They despise our way of life, our freedoms and our values. Unfortunately they are going to win as both the US and UK governments are doing away with civil liberties and if we are not careful we will lose the very way of life we are attempting to defend.
6. McMicrogalPresumably you think Islamicist terrorism in Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan, India and Russia is also because of these countries' support for America?
Reminiscent of Lord Cardigan in the Crimean war who kept refering to the Russians we were fighting as the "French" who were then our allies.
#6--McMicrogal---ok, the US bases are gone from Europe...now, who will you blame when attacked again?? you must have another country in mind, for you certainly won't place blame where it belongs!
#3 Because real estate is too expensive in the U.S.
#4 FinnKing. 750 bases and we still can't impose our will on the rest on the planet? Our true secret agenda is to secure the dna of the worlds best footballers then combine, clone, repeat until the WOrld Cup is OURS!!! You tell me a better way than secret prisons and hundreds of military (for observation only) bases.
#8 TSW. I think that they're paying so much attention to Russia b/c of Russia's ability to impede U.S. Policy. You can really see Russia starting to form an energy alliance with the big suppliers, like Iran and the soon to be biggest consumer, China. This triangular cooperation is the beginning of the end of the Hegemony we've enjoyed. Damn the free market. Just a thought.
No idea. Also, why didn't the Scottsman allow comment on yesterday's 'Child beheading man' article?
This must be why Condi doesn't want to comply with her subpeona from Congress. She might have a "slip of the tongue" and actually tell the truth.
Putin is the Scorpion riding the Turtle. It is his nature.
Russia is now orchestrating riots in Estonia.
Remember, In 1939, Russia and Germany were Allies. In September 1939, Nazi Allied Russia invaded Estonia.
In 1 year, 60,000 were killed or deported by Russia.
Russia were Invaders, not Liberators.

#15 TSW Many thanks. Interesting site. You're right, they'd likely be keen to cooperate in irritating Russia, but these may not be the kind of friends you want to set out the best silver for.... scary.
The United States has lost influence and muscle throughout Europe, but not with Poland or the Czech Republic. Russia is showing its muscle is greater than the US. This banter of rhetoric is just that- rhetoric for the world to hear. The missile interceptors will be installed
I'm not a poet, but I just heard that Wolfowitz has been given a week until he'll be flutering by. And I thought with a sigh, I hope the United States leaves Europe high and dry! This is taxpayers money: we should put the missile interceptors where citizens appreciate the United States.
C'mon you ingratefools! These missiles are free! What if Iran wants to wipe off the entire Europe, before wiping off the unites states and Israel and Saudi Arabia and Jordan and....?!
When this system is set up what's to stop the USA nuking a country? With the US in charge of the system, they can let certain missiles through and take-out others.
It increases the nuclear threat by a) making Europe a target and b) allowing the most aggressive state on Earth (the US) to carry out further, but nuclear, pre-emptive strikes.
so you really think that the US would let some missiles go and not others?
I think the Russian objection is more related to where the missiles would get shot down AT... where the debris from a missile would fall..
that and the russians seem to miss the point that even if we miss them and they do go off... the fallout will not be good for ANY country that finds itself "downwind"
but rhetoric is rarely designed for the thinkers...
32. mike - across the pond
Well, in my lifetime I have watched the US and 'uk' (and lessers) stomp over the world without a care about the people they main and kill. Their current empire is under threat by coalitions including China and Russia. They have entered into a phase of pre-emptive warfare. Peak Oil also has an effect as does the US economy (include the debt). It's a wounded wild dog and has nothing to lose and everything to win. It's now beyond the stage of simply showing 'credibility'.
So, yes, nothing would suprise me.
Russia is struggling with World Back Debtand flight capital. I think they are manuevering for a new deal. Same as when the Gulf War I went to the UN. Russia opposed the move but agreed when the finacial stranglehold on them was removed by the US.
It's a business game and we the masses get killed for others' profits.
I am much more concerned about old Russian reactors, living where I do!
Russia and the US share 'NASA' technology, much of the advanced weaponry is based on similar tech. It's a matter of money, and where to spend the money for Russia- I agree with Finnking on that.
Russia, and its peoples, are looking at a global economy in which they must compete. It knows it must be part of that world. Beyond that, I think Russia looks at the balance of world power. Russia wants to be on the side of the victor, not stripped with the losers. Russia has taken a step back from Iran; most people see it as a small step, when actually it was a decisive and giant step. Russia is a friend to the US, not a best buddy, but friends and in conversation, one is not deemed better than the other, stronger or weaker than the other, but as equals.
I imagine, that behind closed doors, Russia minds the missile interceptors less than it would have the world believe.
Russia sells missiles to Iran but complains about the US selling defensive missiles to Eastern Europe.
Comments #1, #2, #13, #21, & #25 were not offensive. I really wish Djookers, Bikewoman, and their cronnies would stop deleting posts. Both were using other names last night.
