And so the god deception continues around the world.

Will our planet ever be free from the religious bacteria which has almost destroyed it?

#4 Northeast: I disagree.

Due to the fact that mankind has been subjected to this religious bacteria, the world is a far worse place than it would have been had religion never been born at all.

Religion breeds evil,,

Good for them. It's nice to see some faith in this jaded world.
Boy Wonder, there are many faithful in the first world. They probably just avoid you.

10

cape town and stockbridge 09/05/2007 14:12:38

#9 caculon: Define faith!

Because I tell you this much. I have as much faith that there is no god as christians believe there is..

The story of the dude that lives in the sky who sat dormant for a few billion years doing nothing who suddenly created an entire univers in a mere seven days is what makes christians weird..AND to then preach about this invisible OLD TESTAMENT murderous, barbaric sadist is what cements the belief that they will always be mad.

THEN,,to think that these religious types preach to their children and force them to preach, worship and cultivate this invisible creature is even more absurd. Not only do we have them on their knees worshiping the invisible dude, but they also kneel down and kiss the ring of some human dude in a robe who just happens to live at the Vatican.

Absurd does not come close to describing such people and their religious beliefs.

11

12

Media 1,

cape town and stockbridge 09/05/2007 14:51:57

#11 northeast: Funny how in your world the word demented is reserved for those who employ reason as opposed to blindfolded fear.

13

Calculon,

09/05/2007 15:04:51

10 Media1 It's interesting to see your pride that you believe in nothing. Define faith? Faith is trust, loyalty, and complete confidence in something. That is how I define it though you could probably find a definition that makes faith sound silly or irrelevant.

The Old Testament states very clearly that God is slow to anger and quick to forgive. Follow his rules and there's nothing to worry about.

You're as much a product of your upbringing and peer group as any Christian. You are as guilty of spouting rote dogma as any catholic priest. Why didn't you pull the Spaghetti Monster out of your hat or talk about an invisible teapot?

The pseudo-intellectual elitism of atheists is a bore.

You arrogantly dismiss the core belief system of about 170 million people as absurd. Understand that you have no monopoly on being right, and that because you believe something it isn't necessarily true. You make some of the most fanatical followers of catholicism seem subdued by comparison.

14

Media 1,

cape town and stockbridge 09/05/2007 15:24:27

#13 Calculon: I employ reason to draw my conclusions about religion. Off-course as a child I was not permitted to do so. I was forced to attend Sunday school, I was told of how I would burn in hell for my sins, I was even told that protestant children were going to hell. Thankfully I matured and was then able to draw my own conclusions. I read the bible back to front and saw it for the political document that it was. I wondered how it was that the CHURCH, the messengers of god were so adamant that the Earth was the centre of the universe only for science to prove them wrong. I then wondere how it was suddenly ok to forgive them for this error and place complete trust in everything else that they preached.

Science tests its hypothesis, whereas religion must rely on blindfolded faith in order to ingahter the multi million dollars its preachers and leaders require to spread the lie.

I do not dismiss the core belief system of 170 million people. How can they be held accountable for believing in something they were forced to accept as truth by people they trusted?

As far as your old testament defence is concerned, let us look at the black and white facts.

The god of that old testament is without doubt the most despicable, arrogant, bloodthirsty, murderous, evil, barbaric monster in all of fiction. Therefore, perhaps you will allow me to deny such a monster a seat in my world. My children are not agnostic, instead they are children of an agnostic who are free to draw their own conclusions about life and the cosmos. I wonder if there is one christian household who would offer their children the same choice of freedom. I doubt it!

albanman,

It's sad that there appears to be little but vitriol coming from the mouths of some in this thread.
It seems to me that the atheists making comments are as dogmatic and closed-minded as any right wing religious fanatic.

There is nothing in the example or teachings of Jesus (and little in the Qur'an) that would justify the cruel actions of some who have claimed to believe in God. People have always fallen short of religous teachings (regardless of the religion) Yet, there are many more wonderful peope who believe in God. As for atheists, there are many fantastic people amongst them as well - but then, there was Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot et al.

In other words, no one has the right to throw stones and nothing is served by insulting the faith of others. As for the existence of a deity - well, that simply cannot be proved. Then again, it's also not possible to prove that God doesn't exist.

Calculon: as a believer, I offer you this thought on faith (not my wisdom). Faith is nothing more, and nothing less, than our daily struggle to accept that God accepts us just the way we are now.

17

Media 1,

#15 AJ fae Fife: Im with you!

The con that is religion is a reminder of how weak and brainwashed so many minds around the world are...

18

Calculon,

09/05/2007 16:14:53

15 You insult me for no reason. Why is my being Christian reason to dislike me? Take a look at who's agreeing with you @17. :-)

14 I'm not sure why I'm even responding. It started out as a low key positive comment @9. I'm not interested in defending other peoples' faith though I won't accept that it's evil.

I was brought up in an atheist/agnostic household, and we were taught not to mock people or insult their faith. I don't reject science, but I don't worship it as infallible either. All my brothers and sisters made their own choices about religion 3 Christians 2 Agnostics and one who just doesn't care.

I can accept that the Old Testament God was not a very nice guy. I don't think those times were very nice. The Old Testament can be read as product of the time like other books of faith. The difference is that most Christians and Jews see it as that.

16 I read the teachings of Jesus and found that it made more sense than anything else I'd read. A true message of peace. I am saddened that it is twisted far too often into something quite different. I like your definition of faith. Thank you.

19

Media 1,

cape town and stockbridge 09/05/2007 16:21:58

#16 albanman: Hitler made many refrences to his catholic belief system. So to simply hi-jack him as an athiest is somewhat naive and misguided. He was certainly nasty, but athiest?

I agree that the views of the non believer sometimes come across as dogmatic as that of the believers. But I find that is mere frustration born from the mind of a person who employs reason and common sense as opposed to blind folded fear.

I see the damage religion has done to this world and I refuse your defence prior to you making it. RELIGION and RELIGION alone has destroyed communities, families, cities and nations. It has NEVER offered any proof of its claims other than the man written bronzed age political document that cannot possibly be taken seriously by anyone who has not been tarnished by the religious brush from birth or found themselves so down and out that the only place left to turn is the church.

When religion teaches its followers NOT to preach to their kids I will offer it some respect. Besides, if this god is real you dont need a preacher to tell you so, you will figure it out without the pressure.

Which is why I see religion as a hoax! For when you leave a child to make his or her own decisions they will usually find the bible to be a ridiculous piece of fiction and will either believe that there is something out there just not a god , or they will believe in nothing.

LOL Media1 and AJ you sound like two Romans about to throw a poor Christian martyr to the lions.

21

Media 1,

cape town and stockbridge 09/05/2007 16:39:43

#20 Dox: Nah. I would not do that!

Christians are not bad people and they certainly should not be punished for being christian. I feel sorry for them because in almost every instance they have had no choice but to believe in this devine creature of the sky. Their parents, schools, books and Sunday schools saw to it that they lived in fear of God. We are all brainwashed from an early age, some of us more strictly than others, which is why some of escape and some of us do not......

22

Media 1,

cape town and stockbridge 09/05/2007 17:15:41

I wish I could be here when we eventually find that other planet just like ours...

I bet the church has already written a response to such a finding. lol

23

Ms Horrible Cankers,

The Cyber Shebeen 09/05/2007 17:51:03

If you want to be religious on you go...just dont brainwash children into believing it...being indoctrinated means that they do not have a choice and I believe that that...is damaging. After all children are like little sponges that soak up everything around them and believe what adults tell them. It is wrong to tell them that they should lead their life by a holy book and by your own particular brand of god. Children should be godless until they are old enough to start asking their own questions...when their intellects can deal with it. Let the children decide for themselve later on...and then lets see what happens in the world...

Media 1: What you said in #14 about my God is revolting, and extremely offensive.

God did what He did because of the sin of mankind. He is a Righteous God and cannot allow sin in His presence. He must punish those who sin because of His sinless nature. That is why He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins. Christ took our place, He died instead of us. If we accept that gift (it is a gift, we don't have to do anything to receive it, nor do we deserve it) then God will look past our sin and accept us into heaven. II Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness. But is patient towards you, not wishing any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." God loves you; He loves you enough to send His Son to die for you. Don't let your pride and arrogance push you away from Him.
"The fool says in his heart "there is no God."

Media 1 #10
God created the world and all that is in it in 7 days. We do not know what He did for eternity before creation. But it doesn't matter. He was there and that's all that is important.

I kiss the ring of no man. For me there is only one mediator between God and men, that is the Man Christ Jesus. I believe that the Catholic Church strayed from true Christianity a very long time ago.

Nobody invented God. He invented us all. You deny Him because it's your nature. You don't want there to be a God because you know that means you would have to answer to Him. And you don't want to have to answer for your sins.

Plus the blossoming of a Gallagate girl's sexual appetite, that occasioned a broad sweep of rampant manhood, disnae count either!!!!! Shoplifting in the evil temples of commerce in Sauchiehall St, was a necessary outlet for the young Ms Cankers to express her angst against the impure capitalist world!

She is Mr gibs363, a modern day saint without comparison!! So jist watch yer mooth pal, or Ms Cankers will have ye struck doon and reduced to a babblin' imbecile!!! Oops........too late!!!!!!!!!!

My dear boy..as it was 1:21 when you called the Cyber Shebeen no one was not 'still up'....neither was one 'straddled ower Shuggie's fizzog' as you so eloquently suggested.....indeed one had one's nose buried in that hugely comical play by the bard 'Much ado about nothing'....As to your inferrance that you were indeed reading the Holy Bible....why I seriously doubt that you could even lay your hands on one, due to the blistering effect that it would have on the skin and the possible loss of one or more fingers through gangarene...Perhaps you should consult with your opticion and be furnished with spectacles...thus enabling you to distinguish between 'The Holy Bible' and 'Hugh Hefner's Bumper Bunnies'....
