I'm reading a book right now called "Tommy" by Holmes. It describes the British soldier of WWI. The old BEF would have been horrified that a target this close would have been missed. A semi-automatic rifle and no practice probably had as much to do with saving this brave man's life as his own cool personal action. Blasting away will always result in poor markmanship.

Good luck with 'Tommy' . It gets more and more tedious and bogged down in regimental statistics. Somebody remind me why the British Army is in Afghanistan, thanks.

"Somebody remind me why the British Army is in Afghanistan, thanks."

Various reasons but: 1) to ensure an oil and gas line deal went to a US company and not an Argentinian company, 2) to take control of what was thought to be lots of crude in the area (I think the russians were lying)(oil companies can put 'ownership' of prospective fields on the credit column of their books and the share price will rise), 3) to re-start the heroin flow (cash crop, no receipts, no tax), 4) to kill folk 5) because industry/banking runs the USA/'uk' and not the people, 6) the weapons industry loves it (tax payer pays crazy prices for weapons. It's called SUBSIDISING the rich).......etc etc etc.

SOme will say that it is a humanitarian operation. Humanity never looks good in uniform and carrying a gun.

For goodness sake - stop identifying these people by name and address - there will be a price to pay for this journalistic irresponsibility one day, but I suppose the press doesn't really care - it would be just another story that would sell more papers?

"I don't know how they missed us. They were firing on us with RPGs, mortars and machine- guns. "

...they miss because they are farmers and goat herders, with very little military training.

There's the British soldier we learned to admire. If only England's people still had their guts.
