Bravo SNP!

It's good to see the Executive assert policy on this matter, but can it do so in the long run ?

I'm sure the Westminster spin will turn this into "scotland will become a haven for terrorists" or something like that .. with a few willing media partners perhaps ?

Well done Kenny, Alex et al.

Ha ,ha As if the police dont go around harrassing people, under labour the police have a devine right to shoot you dead .Stop and seach has been going on in deprived areas within glasgow for years, the kids just accept it as a daily occurance.

It is a police state already and they can stop and search you anytime they want to.

Spot on mate.
Shoot you dead for no reason, and not have to answer for it.

Good for you, Alex!

Keep on flying the flag like this and Scotland will truly be a very different country to that Prison Colony down south,

How many convictions have resulted from the present stop and search legislation ?
What crimes had been committed ?
What is the ratio of searches to charges and to convictions ?

We see already a clear benefit for Scotland being in independent hands. It's a gimme that if we still had Labour in power north of the border we would be falling in line with these pretty draconian measures necessary to "set our people free."

Scotland does not require these powers because it has not operated a ruthless foreign policy of invasion, decapitation, occupation and subversion to bring upon itself the hatred of much of the world.

I wonder what SNP have done with all the Labour Rubber stamps?
At least that will save on the stationery bill for the endless rubber stamping that Scottish labour blindly did when told to by London Labour

Boy Wonder,

Good for our new government! We will never slavishly copy the route that the England chooses.

The Thatcherite SUS law was/is bad enough. This new measure is a complete betrayal of the democratic principles the peoples of these Island espouse.

I got stopped once for carrying a plastic bag home at 10pm. I had just bought some bread and a few other things at a petrol station. But to the cops, I looked suspicious. And I'm not a black person! Is that they have to go through all the time??

FLUB,

I am glad to see this! I was on the thread yesterday on this subject, and aside from some bizarre and irrelevant comments, I was glad to see that the majority opinion was against the proposed legislation, which the Police don't want either. Good to see the Scots Parly doing what it was elected to do at last!

Anyway, on the subject of bizarre comments, could #4 and #6 please indicate when the Police in Scotland have ever shot anybody, especially dead? If they can't (which they can't) can they please shut up and go onto the thread concerning the Teletubbies? Probably more suitable. (Or #4 perhaps a spelling website...)

15

Miss H,

I don't even undertand what this new law is for. As other folk have said the police already have the power to stop people and question them. What is the point of it?

16

viper217,

A step backwards in giving Police the powers needed to hold back the rising tide of criminality.

Draconian? in light of the Counter Terrorism powers already in play?

Hey you what are you doing skulking about this street at 4am? - why do you have a screwdriver? - oh you are an apprentice Electrician on your way to work?

Yeah right, get in the back of the van son.

Anthony,

Principle and common sense. Well done Justice Minister - keep this up and there is a distinct danger of the Scottish people actually feeling proud of and represented by this administration.

In a word: Excellent.

Again I implore the Government to model themselves along the lines of the People Politics of the Scandinavians and Dutch rather than aping the Power Politics of the English and Americans.

One equals freedom and openness for its population the other equals repression and fear. This is a signal that the Scandinavian/Dutch model is more acceptable to this government.

walter,

If this policy goes in front of the UK parliament and is voted in by the UK MPs and becomes UK law then the exclusive cannot then say they will not allow it in Scotland.
Anti terror laws are not devolved and like any thing else that is not devolved and is passed by the UK government for the UK as a whole then one part of the UK cannot say they will not implement it.

#21, ask the same question when you've been stopped for no reason 21 times......

Read Pastor Niemoller.....

22

Edward,

#20 Walter
The Scottish Government is whole responsible for the Police and the judiciary in Scotland, thast fully inclusive of Scottish Laws, Policing levels, courts etc
Laws are not UK wide, never have been, due to Scotland having its seperate legal system
For anti terror laws, it can come into force in England, but its upto the Scottish Government to also pass a Scottish version of the same law
Normally with such an important issue The Scottish Parliament usually accepts as read to accomadate the requirement, but as said Scotland has a seperate legal system and there would be much finger ringing in the Scottish Parliament if its felt that any additional or any changes are effected that are felt that are not required

23

IWright,

Anyone seen a police officer walking the streets, never mind stopping anyone?

24

IWright,

Edward - Westminster can pass any law it wants and have it effect Scotland. "Power devolved is power retained."

25

Edward,

29/05/2007 16:29:02

#20 Walter
Ive further read through the Scotland Act 1998 and the Crime and Security Act 2001
According to the Scotland Act, there is of course no mention of the 2001 act, however there is a provisio that some powers are retained in Westminster
This highlights a problem in that the Scottish Police are under the authority of the Scottish Parliament, but under the provisions of the Crime and Security act, they have to adhere to the act passed in Westminster

The law is aimed at harrasing Brits of Pakistani origin. Recently the United States suggested to impose visa requirements for asian-brits to visit America. It sounded like a joke to some of us, (not a nice one though).

If this law is rejected in Scotland it will justify my vote for SNP a lot too soon.

Injustice is a theat to justice.
