Disgracefull! When are people going to wake up to China and the attrocities its commited agianst its own people, Tibetans, the environment and its wildlife. It constantly denies all of this, yet is allowed to contunue perpetrating wrongs against the world. It should never have won the Olympic games, what an abomination that was. Those who supported its bid claimed it would help move the country forward and open it up. However they're too powerfull and do as they please anyway. Its a sad fact that many of the worlds most endangered species happen to be prevalent, it not endemic, in China.
"Great Leap Forward", right, a great leap right into the abyss.I used to think that the easiest job in the world would be a ventriloquist on the radio. Now I know that even that job is ten times more difficult than a Chinese Quality Control inspector or Chinese naturalist.
Most important problem was the noise pollution in the river, it made the dolphins blind, so they were unable to hunt for food or find mates...

WTF are you on about, mate??
I posted recently on the modern-day extinction of species ... and this article only confirms what I wrote.
What use is the WWF and other organisations like this if they cannot put a halt to the extirpation of our wildlife??
China is to be condemned for allowing this happen. The government could have done something ... but did not! They stood back and didn't care enough. And the rest of the world has a part of the blame too, because they knew of the problem.
Sometimes I'm just so sick of even being part of this human race. We don't deserve this beautiful planet we're so intent on destroying and the wonderful life-forms we so casually consign to the history bin!
Are we surprised? China is the most polluted nation on earth and they don't give a damn about petrol emissions, "night soil" fertilising their crops (DO NOT BUY CHINESE GARLIC, IT ROTS IN TWO DAYS!), their government is corrupt and they have the highest rate of executions in the world.
And China expects the world to go there for the 2008 Summer Olympics and not notice the disgusting spitting by citizens, the coughing, the clouds of smog and pollution in all the major citizens, and the enivronmental disaster of the Three Gorges Dam.
I have been to Beijing and Harbing but will never go back. The inscrutable nature of the Chinese is just a front for corruption, lying, cheating, anti-social behaviour, and general piggishness and boorishness.
Unless you have plenty of money and stay in only five-star hotels your visit there will be hell.
Don't go to that cesspool of a country! Been there, done that and NEVER, EVER again.
Terrible situation that we continue to increase our own numbers even though we know we're driving other species to extinction. Nature is cautioning us but the warnings will never be heeded until it's too late because the only important thing to politicians is money and power. We in the UK already wiped out most of our endemic species and now other developing nations are doing the same.
#7 - a bit harsh on China, no? I too have been there and found the pollution, spitting, etc etc, the shoving...oh lord, it was intense! But we must remember China is in essence a third world country across most of its land. People live in dire poverty - why on earth would they give a toss about a dolphin if they simply want to catch fish to feed their family and scrape a living in the polluted cesspit that is the Yangtze.
China is polluted, vast, industrial, dirty and moving forward at a rate that may tear the country into shreds - a law unto itself. No way can Shanghai and Beijing continue at the rate they are and not break away, leaving the rest of the country to rot.
Human rights and every other wrong aside, China is an interesting country, with a recent past that is troubled. We don't seem to blame the USA for similar human rights breaches, or pollution. We don't get at Japan and Norway as much for hunting whales (that seems to be passe for news now).
Biologists have known for at least 20 years that the Baiji was critically endangered. WWF and a plethora of other prganisations and individuals spoke up, told people, warned, asked for help - no one listened.
NGOs only have so much power and authority, all they can do is campaign. They cannot impose fines, or laws, or sanctions. They can educate, and shame those who are polluting/destroying whatever resource/animal is about.
Don't rag on at WWF - the Panda is safe, in no small part due to the iconic Panda logo and the dedication of the Chinese authorities.
You win some, you lose some, it is the rule you must live by in conservation. I find it crushing that a delightful, gentle creature has left our planet forever, but humans rarely learn a lesson until it is too late.
We must now focus on toher species and projects in China - pandas, birds, mammal species as yet unclassifed or discovered. Polluted it may be, but vast tracts of wilderness remain.
And if you are eve
Hey
Just go to Peta Tv and enter China Dog and Cat Fur Farm Investigation.
Have fun!
Traditional Chinese culture worshipped heaven and earth. Laozi said in Tao Te Ching, "Man follows the earth, the earth follows heaven, heaven follows the Dao and the Dao follows what is natural." Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism safeguarded China's cultural values for 5000 years. When Communism was introduced to China from the USSR, it used such traits as deceit, violent revolution, incitement, espionage, genocide and gangs to gain and maintain its power. The CCP’s evil ideology is built on the premise that humans can conquer nature and transform the world. 80 years later, we see rampant environmental disaster, food poisoning, and dying species. No surprise that bird flu and SARS still flourish in China, and the blood supply of 27 provinces is tainted with Aids. CCP has destroyed China, its culture and its people. Tradition has it that divine retribution will play a part in its downfall. Many believe that CCP will fall soon. Since Nov. 2004, over 24 million people have Quit the Communist Party in China with the publication of http://ninecommentaries.com/ - which reveals the true history of the CCP. See http://declaration.epochtimes.com/. CCP's downfall will affect the world. It's important for everyone to understand what's really going on there.
30 percent of the 150 species living in the Yellow River are extinct, so this was inevitable I suppose. The CCP, and those possessed by its evil culture, have no mercy for life. They are supremely selfish and consume resources without regard for anyone else or any other living thing.
In China, the Yunnan Box Turtle and Yunnan Lake Newt have gone extinct, and the South China Tiger is on its way to extinction, all within the past 5 years. With that said, the nearly extinct Pere David Deer in China is now also in danger as the Chinese regime has encouraged private hunters, willing enough to pay large sums of money to hunt the deer, to visit China for that reason.
But the cruelty to animals in China doesn't stop there. In many parts of China, spectators crowd into packed buses to visit "live killing zoos" where people can pay $5 for a chicken, $200 for a cow, and watch them fed live to packs of ferocious tigers. The crowds include men, women, and children of all ages. All of them jaded to the sight of seeing a defenseless living creature being thrown to its death. You can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wICsGLCyAys&mode=relat...=
This is what happens when you destroy the spiritual and cultural foundation of a country and replace it with materialism and aetheism. And until the CCP is removed from China and replaced with a government that yearns to rebuild its once proud spiritual and cultural foundation, things will not improve.
Yes, those that don't know their history are doomed to repeat it, but history is too depressing.
We need to focus on a new era of international co-operation, it order to achieve it. (and help all species)
I say this because the USA looks like it is about to crash hard.
More on topic, is the fact that the Florida panther is critically endangered. (and could very well be the next large mammal to go extinct)
Another species bites the dust! People must realize that with any advancement of civilization and urbanization, nature looses every time. If you turn back the clock, how many species in Europe, Middle East, and Asia have disappeared due to man? The bible states that Daniel survived the lions den and the cypresses of Lebanon were used to construct the temple. These are just some examples how man changes his environment.
In China’s case, the godlessness of communism is now coming home to roost. When you raise a whole society without reverence to God (or some other higher calling), then you create a whole society who fails to respect anything. You can see by the rampant corruption, waste, abortion, executions, and the destruction of their environment, the only thing anyone cares about in China are themselves. There are a lucky few who have not succumbed to these evils, namely because they still maintain their family / village / religious structures that sustain their minds, hearts, and souls. What we should fear is the other 95% of the population who are on a runaway course that will devour their own country. Once that is used up, they will move onto other areas of the world.
Welldone the Chinese.
Probably ate the whole lot of them.
Who and what next.
Freiggring disgrace.
Deep fried Panda Canton style and then open up more areas for environmental polution and factories manufacturing total junk.
sickned at this one
None too pleased to here this news .... but .... Scotland managed to get rid of its bear, wolf, beaver and other species.
Species go extinct with and without human influence. Apparently, 99% of all lifeforms that have ever lived on this planet are now extinct. A few exceptions are the spider, jellyfish and cockroach and a number of others. I don't suppose anybody here actually believes that the human species will not go extint soon. Here in the USA, bees are apparently dying out mysteriously. Now that is a problem and I agree with one of the above statements: the US is in for a big crash very soon. But I think that the whole world is in big, big trouble the like of which hasn't been seen for 10000 years (see the odd boneyards of alaska and siberia).
#7 Tim if I buy apples, peaches or cherries in China they start to go 'brown' after a few days. After a week the apples would no longer be edible.
If I go to Loblaws and buy the same produce - some of which may be produced in Southern Ontario as well -- I have seen the apples looking 'day fresh' after about 4 - 5 WEEKS.
now tell me which one scares you the most????
BTW the the Chinese treatment of its rivers is despicable - they treat natural resources the same way as the treat 'human life' as commodities....
Biggest factors are greed and corruption
regarding the sad loss of the Yangtze Dolhinn. Life is Eternal, its uncountable multitude of forms come and go. Anyway help is on the way. Planet X will be here very soon then most of us life forms won't be here anymore. The earth will then revive and replentish.
