MARK McGhee was finally unveiled as Aberdeen manager yesterday but, like predecessor Jimmy Calderwood, could not quite shake off an association with the Old Firm.
An honest McGhee admitted he had been keener on the Celtic job, while he also expressed his belief that the opportunity to manage the Parkhead club had not passed him by. Unlike Calderwood, who was always open about his past as a Rangers supporter, the former Aberdeen player can count on clemency from the fans due to his contribution when a revered striker with the Pittodrie club.

McGhee has signed a one-year rolling contract following Celtic's decision to end their interest in the 51-year-old former Motherwell manager. He has brought Scott Leitch, his assistant at Fir Park, with him. The delay in confirming their arrival this week was not due to any lingering hope on McGhee's part that Celtic might return to him having tired of their compensation wrangle with West Bromwich Albion, whose manager Tony Mowbray remains the Parkhead club's top target.

Instead, Aberdeen's own struggle to agree a compensation fee with Motherwell lay behind the seven-day delay between McGhee intimating his desire to come to Pittodrie, and yesterday's official appointment.

McGhee said he made up his mind to join Aberdeen last Friday afternoon. Dermot Desmond, Celtic's major shareholder, did not phone him to confirm he was no longer a candidate for the Parkhead vacancy until Saturday morning. But by then he had sensed his chances of moving to the club he has always supported were receding. Fearful that he might also miss out on the chance to return to Aberdeen he sent a text to Willie Miller, his former team-mate and current director of football at Pittodrie, to assure him that his ambitions lay exclusively with the north-east club, for the time being at least.

McGhee is confident that should he prove a success with Aberdeen, where he tasted European Cup Winners' Cup success in 1983, then another chance to join the team he has always declared an affection for will present itself. "I think it's something which could still possibly happen in the future," he said yesterday, when asked whether his Celtic ambitions were now at an end. "Doing well here with Aberdeen can only help. All I can do is keep doing well."

He was frank when outlining where he would have preferred to continue a managerial career which began in 1991, at Reading. Since then he has managed at five other clubs. "On a scale of one to two then Celtic would be above the Aberdeen job but I have taken the Aberdeen job and I am only thinking about what is going on at Pittodrie," he explained. "All my energies and commitment are channelled towards Aberdeen and to bringing success to this club."

McGhee was philosophical about failing to progress further than the initial interview stage on this occasion with Celtic. He said only Desmond could answer the question of how close he was to being offered the job.

"He can tell you just how close I got," said McGhee. "I had a fair hearing. They chose to go with someone else. This doesn't mean Aberdeen are second best. I am not coming here in a huff. Quite the opposite in fact. I am excited by the challenge." He continued: "I was considered for it (the Celtic post] and I was flattered at being given that opportunity, as an ex-player and as a bit of a supporter of the club. It was exciting. But I didn't get the job. Someone else has got it. I have been given the opportunity by Aberdeen and I have left the Celtic thing behind."

Those Aberdeen fans prompted to take issue with these comments might wish to take into account the fact that the Pittodrie club passed on McGhee in 1999. Although Ebbe Skovdahl was chosen instead, McGhee harbours no hard feelings. Stewart Milne, the club owner, had told him he had come close to being appointed. "He told me at the time that I had hit the crossbar, but they wanted a foreign coach," he revealed. A decade later, the Aberdeen board were unanimous in their approval of McGhee. But Miller accepted that the club's principal target had first to deal with matters elsewhere.

"The Celtic job is such a big job I can fully understand why Mark had to see that to its conclusion," said Miller. "In no way are Aberdeen second best. In conversation over the last week he has made that very clear to me.

"I needed to be convinced that what he was saying was true, and he convinced me. It did not take him long. I am sure all the fans out there can fully understand that the Celtic job is such a big job that he had to see that through first."

I suppose you have to say he was honest, but it can't exactly fill the Aberdeen fans with confidence in him.

You've got to laugh, at least if you are a Motherwell fan. We thought it would be about 3 months into the new job that McGhee started prostituting himself again. He exceeded our expectations by doing it on day 1.

Buckle up Don's fans. He may or may not get it done on the park, but you can guarantee to hear plenty of non-committal noises away from it.

Honesty is fine as long as it isn't accompanied by insensitive stupidity. What Miller seems to be saying is that just because McGhee accepted the Aberdeen job as a consolation prize, doesn't mean that he views the job as second best. "In no way are Aberdeen second best. In conversation over the last week he has made that very clear to me."
It hardly seems the best of footings to get your managerial career off to a good start at Pittodrie. Particularly for those of us old enough to remember those halcyon days of the early '80's, remember when the Dons and to a lesser extent Jim MacLean's Dundee United were the New Firm. McGhee was part of the set-up then and sentiments such as he's allegedly expressed seem to me a little unwise.

I wanted to be the Celtic manager. If i was to choose between Aberdeen and Celtic, I would have chose Celtic every time. I'm very sorry to have missed out on Celtic.

BUT I'M NOT HERE TO TALK ABOUT CELTIC.

Young hungry managers like Billy Reid and Derek McInnes are over looked in favour of a dud that wants tae manage one of your biggest rivals ... even Brian Reid at Ayr Utd would have been a better choice ... guys like Reid and McInnes will soon be out of the reach of clubs like Aberdeen and just proves again ... why Ahbahdeen is full of sh*te ...

Unbeleivable! We should have known that the central belt papers would put such a negative slant on the appointment of a new Aberdeen manager. The tone of the above article simply does not reflect McGhee's press conference yesterday or the positive reaction to his arrival in the North East. The Celtic thing, WHICH HE WAS ASKED ABOUT, covered only a small part of proceedings and he was candid enough to answer it without embarrassment. He had two potential job offers, so what? Everyone would consider the bigger job first, and Aberdeen supporters are relaxed about that. The overall tone of his press conference was extremely positive and full of intent for how he wants things to go at Aberdeen, and the reaction to his appointment in our area has been very warm. Why didn't they cover that? The central belt papers and broadcasters are 'at it' here and it's not going to wash with Aberdeen supporters. So tough luck - welcome back, Dingus!

I'm sure the first thing he'll want to do is work on discipline

Congratulations on getting the least loyal manager in British Football. A man who, five minutes into his new job, is already talking about the next Celtic Job. A man who has walked away from just about every club he's managed when someone else came calling.

Well, except Hearts of course...........

What a farce of an article. When will the central belt nedia realise Calderwood got the dunt for beiung useless, not for being a Rangers man. As DMcL says, this article couldn;t have put a more negative slant on yesterday's press conference. A popular appointment with the fans.

It never ceases to amaze me that fans of whatever club moan about players and managers not having loyalty. Every person has a price and every person has the right to seek betterment for him/herself by hoping to be able to play/manage a club which will give them an increase in income. Any man/woman in the street of whatever skills would gladly accept the offer of a job where the pay is 2 or 3 times that which is currently being received. Ok there must always be a certain amount of loyalty but where the 'compensation' on offer is so much more it is hardly any contest.

Come on Aberdeen fans, lets get right behind one of our legends, welcome him back with open arms, get to Pittodrie & to support our team.
We need to give him some confidence after his past managerial position failures. Ok the Celtic job was probably more lucrative, but to be honest, if he failed at Celtic by not bringing trophies, he would have been out the door in a second, probably led by the Fans.
He was an inspirational player with the Reds back in the good old days, lets see what he can do as a manager.
I personally think that it is a great appointment by the board. Up you Celtic, you can have Mowbray with great delight. McGhee will shine for the Dandies. Bring it on.

It's an open secret McGhee turned Romanov down because Strachan told him he was quitting the Celtic post the following season and that he'd recommend McGhee for the job.

But according to today's "Daily Ranker", it seems McGhee is still playing with words over his behaviour this time last year...

"I've gone to Aberdeen because when I started out in management I had an ambition to take charge of some of the teams I'd played for."

"That was one of the main reasons why I stayed at Fir Park and rejected the chance to go to Hearts when it was there on a plate for me this time last year."

"Hearts were a cold option for me because I had no previous link with the club or any particular depth of affection for them. It's obviously different with Aberdeen."

So there you have it. McGhee didn't go to Hearts because he hadn't played for them. Aye, right...

Another exclusive for the Daily Truth.

But now they have won the title, Rangers will go straight into the group stages, leaving runners-up Celtic to negotiate two qualifying rounds that have been made more difficult after a UEFA revamp.

Smith said: "Avoiding these qualification games is a major, major factor. They are not nice games to be involved in.

"When you maybe have a few changes to your squad or like our team last year a slightly slow start after the rigours of the previous season, important games coming so soon as they do is very awkward.

"So I'm absolutely delighted we are not involved in the two qualifying rounds."

Celtic agree Mowbray compensation

Mowbray finished his playing career at Ipswich after leaving Celtic
West Brom have given Celtic permission to talk to manager Tony Mowbray about the Parkhead vacancy after agreeing a £2m compensation package in principle.

It ends several days of stand-off since West Brom made their demands clear and chairman Jeremy Peace indicated he was not prepared to back down.

But West Brom announced on Saturday that a breakthrough had been made.

Celtic will also pay an additional compensation figure for assistant Mark Venus and first-team coach Peter Grant.

Peace told his club website: "We do not want to lose Tony because he has been an integral part of a long-term project at the club which the vast majority of our fans have bought into.

"But Tony expressed his desire to talk to Celtic and, now that the compensation figure in his contract has been met to our satisfaction, that process can take place.

"If Tony decides to join Celtic, he would leave with our good wishes and we would then immediately put into action the task of appointing a new manager who can take the club forward."

No potential purchaser or investor in that club would want to risk being associated with any rioting fans throughout some of the fair Cities of Europe.

Are there any right minded Tic fans out there that can discuss the new managerial appointment in a logical fashion? I would like tae communicate with a Tic fan that can actually voice his opinion without following the party line ... go on get typing ... I am bored toying with the cyber crew ... they are not up tae it ...

Never selective last week I asked 1NRO to leave kids out of any posts on these threads. As any mention of past indiscretions with kids was disgusting.

Sorry I cannot do anymore than that.

Over the past little while debate was encouraged from all posters on who might be the new tic manager.

Strangely very few tic fans wanted to voice an opinion on the subject. I had thought these threads were for chatting about football matters.

Patrick and TM were spot on with their inside info last week, and even they were slagged by some of the GFITW.

Welcome tae the real world little bhoy ... people sometimes don't like you ... especially when you tamper ... if you get my drift ... you seem a little confused about who is in the right and who is in the wrong ... try getting your brain in gear ...

450 Why not use the letters GTF. Thats the only language that his type understands. Many people are beginning to suspect him of taking pleasure out of talking about "children" in his posts.

That is very true Dailly and I informed you that as long as numb nuts like the above blatantly slated Rangers with a single agenda then they must face the truth ... but apparently they still don't get it ... not very bright really ...

Why can't you grasp it bhoy? (pardon the pun) I am in charge and you are morally below me in the grand scheme of things ... if you want tae fight about it then you will be forced tae accept your cultural indiscretions in full ... do you understand?
384

Dún Aenghus,

455 Child talker.....Stop grovelling to your fellow supporter, DM. As a gentleman he is way out of your league.

Some posters may like to use certain terms or language on these threads I do not.

I suppose as a Gers supporter, anything that is said is never good enough for some posters.

453 dv

Snidey? all I did was post a couple of reasonable posts. I suppose when a post comes from a gers supporter you read what you want to in its content.

Enjoy your evening.

#485 Tim.
I know that I speak of another age but the Celtic team which won the European cup in '67 cost the club 56,000 pounds in total.
On the day of that final 25th may 1967,the Inter Milan team were promised a bonus of 1000 pounds and a new car ,to win the trophy. Sometimes money cant solve all problems! Do you agree?
