THE number of injuries caused by firearms in Scotland rose by more than a quarter last year, new figures published yesterday showed.
Air guns accounted for more than half of these injuries, the figures revealed.

Kenny MacAskill, the justice secretary, said the figures highlighted the need for new laws to fight the "cancer" of gun crime.

Yesterday's annual firearms figures
showed guns killed eight people last year, the same death toll as in each of the previous two years. But the number of people injured went up by 26 per cent, from 189 to 239.

Air weapons accounted for 143 of these cases, and also accounted for more than half of all firearms offences - 675 out of 1,245.

Officials said changes in the way gun crimes are recorded could have led to an apparent rise in air-gun crime and cases of "reckless conduct with a firearm". Police previously excluded air-gun incidents where no injury or damage was caused, but these were included for the first time last year.

Firearms law is a Westminster responsibility, but Scottish ministers want it devolved to Holyrood, and have suggested a consolidated Firearms Act to take account of Scotland's needs.

Mr MacAskill said: "As a country, we must be concerned that firearms casualties rose by a quarter last year, one in three of them children, and cases of attempted murder involving firearms were almost three times that of a decade ago. We supported previous reforms brought in by the UK parliament, including the recent tightening of air weapon sales, but no responsible government can look at these figures and say the job is done.

"While knife crime remains more prevalent in Scotland - and we will not let up on our work to tackle that - we must and will not allow gun crime to get a grip on any of our communities."

Numpty MacAskill trying to justify his existence again. Someone should tell him not to panic, or to try and panic the rest of us, we are not going down the path of the wild west (well maybe they are in Glasgow), but most of the "gun crimes" in Scotland involve air guns.

There is no way firearms law should be devolved to these numpties. The UK already has just about the most draconian firearms laws in the world.

We were told banning 'handguns' would make us safer. What really happened ? Firearms offences and shootings have increased massively.

At least they can no longer use the fiction that the problem was caused by firearms which were held legally. It never was.

As for airguns, as my MSP has already conceded, existing legislation already provides severe punishments for their misuse. Why not enforce existing legislation properly ?

#3 Dragonhead. Well at least we're not going around blowing the heads off of Tibetan girls with rifles.

What's the murder rate of Tibetans by the PLA, in comparison with the murder rate by firearms in Scotland?

Why don't we just abolish all firearms legislation? We can all go around tooled up like Americans. No more concern about gun crime statistics; no more worrying about population increases. Or we could carry swords?

Lies, damned lies and Statistics.

While I agree there should be no gun crime, lets just consider what is actually being said here:

They only started counting air gun crime last year, so no real comparison can be made to any point in history to say figures have gone down or up. The margin of statistical error is massive.

Only half the crimes involved legal guns. So half the crime involved illegal guns. Now call me stupid, but if "criminals" don't give two hoots about the existing laws, what difference are new and improved laws going to make.

Let's get this into perpective here - cars kill more children daily than guns do in a year.

Don't forget that airsoft weapons, whih are about as powerful as a pop gun are also counted in the "gun crime" statistics.
