GIVEN the fact that he has a son who turns one this month, it is remarkable to think Mark McGhee has been in management for almost 20 years. His latest move to take over at Aberdeen, which is expected to be concluded today, means McGhee will shortly join the seventh club of his managerial career. This is the same number of clubs that made up the 52-year-old Scot's playing career.
But stints with Morton, Newcastle (twice), Aberdeen, Hamburg, Celtic, Ik Brage and Reading were not treated as evidence of a player with commitment issues. Rather, he was regarded as a perfect example of a player always seeking to better himself, a
nd take advantage of new opportunities presented. Indeed, his move to Hamburg was positively ground-breaking at the time. At the clubs with which he is most closely identified – Aberdeen and Celtic – he stayed for six and four years respectively. He does not, as a rule, chop and change on a whim, as last summer's deliberations when offered the Hearts job proved. He did an about-turn at Heathrow just as he was preparing to board his connecting flight to Lithuania, on his way to meet Vladimir Romanov.

Yet his time as a manager has been bedeviled by accusations of disloyalty, and a suspicion that he is a serial commitment-phobe. He is also described in some quarters as being a one-season wonder. This is a far from accurate reading of his managerial record. Only at Motherwell did he exceed expectations in his early days, subsequently finding it understandably difficult to maintain this success.

In his first job as manager he led Reading to the old Second Division title in his third year. They were lying second in the Championship the following season when he left for Leicester City. He could not save them from relegation from the Premiership but put in place a team that won promotion back to the top tier and also earned the club £1million in compensation when Wolves came calling.

In fact, only at Leicester City, where he only stayed for just over a year, has McGhee lived up to a reputation for being a mercenary. Indeed, at one stage in the late Nineties, an honest and likeable individual was dubbed "the most hated man in football".

He has actively tried to rehabilitate himself following his sacking by Wolves. After a two-year break from the game he returned to football with Millwall, where he stayed for just over three years. He led the New Den club to promotion from League One and then finished a creditable fourth in the Championship the following season. At Brighton & Hove Albion promotion to the Championship was once more achieved, as was survival a year later.

The time Aberdeen are taking to confirm the appointment of McGhee has granted an opportunity to re-assess his record in management. His man-of-many clubs label is simply evidence of a man unafraid to engage with new challenges.

Only once has he had reason to regret moving between clubs, when the desire to revive Wolverhampton Wanderers saw him break his contract at Leicester after just over a year. "There is no loyalty in the game except involving fans," he said. "Alex Ferguson is not the longest-serving manager out of Manchester United's loyalty to him or his for Man United. He's there because of success, and if he became unsuccessful he wouldn't be there any longer."

McGhee experienced this at Wolves. He didn't leave them. Instead, the Molineux club decided it was time to part company with McGhee. Sir Jack Hayward suddenly closed his cheque book after the side lost in the semi-finals of the Championship play-offs in 1997. "I'd still have come here if I had known," McGhee explained a year later. "But people should realise the job I have now is totally different to the one I thought I was coming to. I thought I was coming in to buy people like Paul Ince, and ended up haggling over £250,000 for Mixu Paatelainen."

Such are the changing times McGhee will be grateful to be handed such as sum to spend on a player when he is finally unveiled as Aberdeen manager. Jimmy Calderwood, his predecessor, is a hard act to follow after twice finishing high enough in the league to qualify for Europe. Only in the cup competitions can McGhee be confident of improving on Calderwood's record. Aberdeen have proved vulnerable to defeat from teams from lower divisions. Indeed, embarrassing reversals against the likes of Queen of the South and Queen's Park are perhaps the reason why McGhee has been offered the chance to take up the reins at Pittodrie, where he starred as a striker.

His own cup record as manager is not impressive, although he did lead Wolves to the semi- finals of the FA Cup 11 years ago. But much else besides is recorded on his managerial CV. It pays to investigate it rather than rely on supposition.

"Yet his time as a manager has been bedeviled by accusations of disloyalty, and a suspicion that he is a serial commitment-phobe."

That'll be something to do with the fact that he's been eyeing up the Celtic job ever since he stepped foot in Fir Park. The only reason he hasn't signed on the dotted line at Pittodrie yet is most likely because Celtic haven't got anyone else in the bag yet.

McGhee is a Celtic fan which I don't have a problem with. What I don't understand is why Aberdeen fans are so keen to get a man who has achieved nothing as a manager and will leave for any job offered by his beloved Celtic. Doomed to failure in my opinion.

McGhee was easily the outstanding candidate for the Aberdeen job and all the concerns raised about future moves are of minimal importance. Whoever manages Aberdeen, if successful will always be attractive to other teams. Rather than fear the prospect of McGhee leaving for a bigger team after a couple of years Aberdeen should hope that this happens. Its far preferable to 5 years of mediocrity under a manager nobody elese wants to employ. JC was constantly blowing his own trumpet but it says it all that job after job in the Championship drifted by without any concrete offer heading his way. I see the Swansea job is still open and even John Hughes, probably as over-rated as JC was linked to it whilst JC was never even mentioned.

Celtic are not trigger happy when it comes to managers so it seems unlikely that the manager's job there will be opene for some time. If when it does they come looking for McGhee that can only mean he has been successful at Aberdeen. What would be the minimum he would have to achieve over the next 2 - 3 years to get the Celtic job? I would have thought as a minimum a 3rd place finish and a cup win. If Aberdeen can achieve that under McGhee I'll personally drive him to his next club. Only in Scottish football could fans fear success. McGhee will be brilliant for the Dons.

Best news in a long time.
Mark McGhee was great as a player for Aberdden, Scotland's LeTissier. I'll always remember his great mazy run through almost the whole Watershei team in the ECWC semi in 1983, only to fluff the shot. If he did have a weakness it was his shooting, but a great striker anyway. His managerial record is fine - any team which had him has fought to keep him, so I hope he leads the dons back to the heights he brought them to as a player. At last, some positive, exciting news at Pittodrie. Celtic will be sick if they dont land Mowbray, but they dont deserve anything better after the way those Celtic minded types treated wee Gordy, another hero of '83.
For an assistant, where's Eric Black?
Maybe GS will do some part-time coaching as well - get some well-deserved time off. The top of the tree beckons...

~2 "I don't understand is why Aberdeen fans are so keen to get a man who has achieved nothing as a manager" - Waken Up, what b!LL!?ks! Read the arcticle, Dr Negative... he won a Championship & promotions with 3 clubs in the English Leagues & had done a good job at M'well on a limited budget with a fairly attractive product. He will of course have simimlar budgetary problems at Pittodrie.

My only concern is loyalty...certainly Foxes fans (I am a season ticket holder at The Walkers these days) have understandably never forgiven him for jumping ship to Wolves.

Doubtless Motherwell fans will feel likewise if he comes to Aberdeen. I still maintain he is the best appointment now (should have been appointed instead of Calderwood, as I posted yesterday..at least he stayed loyal to Motherwell & saw sense 12 months ago....Hearts' loss will hopefully be our gain!

#5 we didnt "lose" out on mcghee!! - we got the best manager in scotland instead - hardly losing out is it!!??

and anyone who finishes 7th in the table and still claims his team are the third best is a trumpet!!
he has no class - after match remarks when Hearts beat them at tynecastle that Csaba swore at him smacked of being a bad loser!

also spends every waking moment wishing he was the celtic manager!!

He was cr&p at Brighton and the fans got him punted. Also punted from Milwall & punted from Wolves. As ususal his pals in the media try to skew the story. McGhee is over rated and will try to move for the Scotland job when innevatibly Burley is sacked when we fail to qualify for the WC. However, the Dons are very welcome to him as they are made for each other (i.e. living in cloud cuckoo land about their aspirations and abilities).

I tend to agree with post #3. But equally, there's no doubt McGhee wants the Celtic job.

Read this extract from the following post from 22 May 2008...

"I spoke to Leitch at the weekend he said then that the Hearts stories are all BS! McGhee WAS given an offer way back i.e. a discussion on his potential salary and there hasn't been any further contact because a) McGhee said he wasn't even thinking of anything until the end of the season and b) Romanov had to be told the "conditions" McGhee had attached. Also you're not forgetting the Celtic factor I hope. According to Chris McCart's son (McCart is now at Celtic) if he wins the League Strachan has said he will probably quit and there's no way McGhee will do anything until that's sorted 'cause he wants Celtic."

And from the "News(sic) of the World" around the same time..."GORDON STRACHAN wants best mate Mark McGhee to replace him at Celtic. That's why Motherwell gaffer McGhee last week turned his back on a move to Hearts. The Fir Park chief announced he had a change of heart on the way to the airport to meet Jambos owner Vladimir Romanov.

But Sport of the World can reveal it was Strachan who convinced McGhee to stay. Strachan could leave Parkhead at the end of next season — and will put McGhee's name in the frame."

All of this came true - except Celtic haven't come calling!
