CHILDREN less than a year old have been taken to hospitals in the North-east of Scotland with alcohol-related illnesses, it was revealed yes-terday.
In the past three years, 165 under-16s were admitted to NHS Grampian hospitals with problems caused by drink. They included a one-year-old and two infants who were even younger.

The figures, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, showed doctors treated two ten-year-olds, 15 aged 12, 59 aged 13, 32 aged 14, 37 aged 15 and 17 aged 16.

There were 23 infants under the age of one admitted to hospitals in the region with neonatal abstinence syndrome, suffered by children of drug-abusing mothers who have been withdrawn from exposure to drugs.

Today's Vote

Do you think it’s a good idea to raise the legal age for buying drink to 21?
Yes, it would help fight the teenage drink problem
No, it would penalise those 18-21s who are not a problem
It would make no difference to underage drinking
