Young Scots risk losing their sight in bid to get blind drunk

Published Date: 27 August 2008
WITH one of the highest rates of binge drinking among teenagers, Scotland already has an unenviable reputation with alcohol.
But now experts are warning about a new trend among young people that is aimed at speeding up the process of getting drunk – pouring shots of alcohol directly into their eyes.

Known as "one-in-the-eye", it involves using shot glasses in a manner similar to that of eye-wash.

Despite the risk of blindness, users hope that by absorbing the alcohol via the membranes of the eye, it will enter the bloodstream more quickly and have a stronger effect when it reaches the brain.

Originating in the bars of holiday resorts on the continent, the dangerous fad has caught on in university bars and nightclubs, despite potentially catastrophic consequences.

One leading doctor warned those who indulge in the craze are seriously endangering their sight.

Dr Maggie Watts, chairman of the Scottish Association of Alcohol and Drugs Action Teams, said: "It is an extremely dangerous activity. It can damage the front of your eye and can cause the bursting of blood vessels.

"Persisting in doing this could lead to permanent damage. There is the possibility of blindness.

"Once you get scarring on the cornea that can be a very serious problem."

And another expert added: "There are so many youngsters now doing this that it is only a matter of time before someone loses their sight.''

But as the new university term approaches, many students fail to see the potential harm in the drinking game.

Charlotte Greene, 23, said she drank a shot of vodka through her eye.

The former Strathclyde University student said: "It's the kind of daft thing more and more students are tempted to do. You're young and you're messing around.

"I took it like an eye-wash and then just waited to see what happened.

"It was very messy, most of it ran down my face and ruined my make-up.

"But it did start to sting almost straightaway and my eye went bright red and bloodshot.

"I'm not sure how much actually went in my eye. I had quite a lot to drink already but I think it did tip me over the edge.

"My eye was red and sore until the following evening. I was a bit worried I had damaged something. So I just drank the normal way after that.

"It was all a bit silly and a bit of an experiment, but it was fun at the time."

Alcohol awareness counsellors said they are horrified by the trend.

Meg Wright, chief executive of Glasgow Council on Alcohol, said: "We are very concerned about the rise in this practice and about anyone who misuses alcohol in this way."

And Paul Waterson, chief executive of the Scottish Licensed Traders Association, said that his members would not tolerate such behaviour if they saw people doing it in their bars.

He said: "They would be horrified, really, and put a stop to it immediately. It's a dangerous and ridiculous practice and we would have no truck with it".

Kenny MacAskill, the justice minister, has repeatedly spoken out against the problem of binge drinking among young people, threatening to crack down on the sale of cheap alcohol in supermarkets and under-age drinking.

A Scottish Government spokesman said they were outraged by the craze.

"We strongly condemn all irresponsible uses of alcohol, which can lead to very serious health consequences in both the long and short term,'' he said.

Young and messing around?

Lack of self image and respect for self more likely.

But why are these supposedly educated young folk indulging in such stupid behaviour? That is the puzzle.

Good News is! The Options will make loads of dosh!

Looking through the 'Key Hole' one can 'see' this is just another attack on the young and Alcohol!

I can 'see' these unprecedented attacks won't stop, until the, 'Muppet's' get their way and have Alcohol the 'Sights' for all of us!

Maybe one-day we will learn to 'See' what Political correctness is all about!

Does anybody remember the film Logan's Run, when everybody had to top themselves at thirty? Maybe (like 1984) it was prophetic??? If this is what university students think of as a good time, no wonder the (apparently) less creative are hacking each other to death.

Cassandra ~3,

I remember the television series of 'Logan's Run' very well.

If the 'Muppet's' get their way and ban Alcohol for the under 25year olds, that means you only have 5 drinking years ahead of you!

Don't think this is an issue. It's a novelty that will wear off.

So what if youngsters do it sometimes. Youth is partly about doing stupid stuff.

I can't see it catching on to any great degree and you would have to do it hundreds of times to cause real damage.

Now an intravenous way of consuming alcohol, that WOULD be a problem. But this? Don't think we'll even remember this issue in less than 6 months.

Excuse me but this cow is stereotyping students and young people just like the idiot at post #29.

Im 22 and most of my mates are around the same age but i have never or have they heard of this stupid craz before, that is the honest truth. People like poster #29 are obviously old far#s wasting away in front of a crossword snarling at todays youth and how stupid that they all are but how wrong he is.

You see, one youth who is involved in crime in Edinburgh receives more news coverage than the thousands who do not commit crime and that puts all the youth under the one umbrella

I do go out most Sat nights and i have been drunk on a few occasions but all im saying is i have never nor has my mates heard of this craz. Now have i seen the carnage, er well i have seen some bashed up faces and blood on the pavements but nothing like the carnage in Baghdad.

I think you should get out more rather than sitting in your rocking chair snaring and grunting at today's youth.

I've been suffering from dry eyes recently and bought some eye drops from Boots. To my surprise, the drops actually left a taste in my mouth and I felt that the drops were running down my throat. I googled this to find that this is normal as the tear duct which drains tears to your nose will also drain some of the eye drop. What surprises me is that it didn't dawn on me that I could have had the same effect, and given myself a lift as well, by substituting some voddy for the drops.

Seriously, I do enjoy a drink myself, but I know that eyesight is extremely important to quality of life and would not have thought that even the slightest risk of damaging this is acceptable.

It really angers me to see the never ending attacks being directed against the youth of SCOTLAND when their attacks should be directed at Brown's sleazy, lying and corrupt New Labouur Party's politicians; who if I remember correctly, had two off their MPs ejected from both Chambers of our sham DEMOCRACY for being aggressively drunk and incapable.
Where are they now?
Both are loaded with cash and have a financialy secure future! That's how factually rotten the present day Utopiian society of Brown's really is.

Until we start at the root of the problem, all these so-called experts should get off the backs of those least responsible!

"who if I remember correctly, had two off their MPs ejected from both Chambers of our sham DEMOCRACY for being aggressively drunk and incapable."

2 labour MPs were ejected from the House of Commons and the House of Lords for being 'agressively drunk and incapable'?

I haven't heard about that before, perhaps you could provide a link or some evidence that it actually happened so I can read about it?

The only 'MP ejected' story I know of is a Tory MP who was ejected for using his camera phone.

I'm sure you aren't lying about it though - so I assume you have proof that it happened?

This is NOT binge drinking. It has nothing whatsoever to do with drinking. It is the actions of fools and should be reported as such---not used as a tool to further put down an activity safely enjoyed by millions across Scotland.

This reminds me of a line from the film Arthur, where Dudley Moore's alcoholic character says:

"I'm going to stop drinking - just as soon as I discover a quicker way of getting alcohol into my bloodstream"

I'm not at all sure that this method would meet Dudley's criteria.

But I don't think that we should get too po-faced about this nonsense: today's youth need to learn from their own mistakes, just like we had to when we were their age. I vaguely remember drinking too much and acting like a fool. Just part of growing up. But at least I think that I drank the stuff, I certainly didn't waste it by pouring it into my eye ...

Makes me feel that they are almost advertising the substance. Over the years I have been amazed when reading newspapers at the detailed information they give in their stories. seem like they just spread the wrong kind of knowledge.Untill I read these details I knew nothing about how they were used. Not recommending this at all, but one way to ingest alcohol is the old "glans in glass" method.

Just pull back your foreskin and dip the old fellow in a glass of vodka (or any other similar booze). The alcohol will be absorbed fairly rapidly through the glans.

I am sick of the day and age in which we live. Our mainstream culture is nihilism. Our youngsters know little of their own heritage. Few play musical instruments and/or dance properly and/or sing. Few appreciate intelligent conversation or can make intelligent conversation. Few read good books. Few take part in active pastimes. Most of our young adults can barely string words together meaningfully, and are desperate to destroy their own bodies. Good luck to them.
