ANDY Murray scaled new heights last night when he reached the first grand slam semi-final of his career.
Watch a picture slideshow of the match here

In a thrilling match lasting three hours and 58 minutes, the Scot produced a courageous performance to defeat Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-1), 4-6 7-5 and set up a last four match against number one seed Rafael Nadal.

The victory at Flushing Meadow in New York means he is now guaranteed to rise to fourth in the world, regardless of his result in the semi-final.

"Overall I'm very relieved," said Murray, who becomes the fifth British player to reach a grand slam semi-final in the open era. "I had my chances in the third set and let it slip. But Juan has been on a great run so he had some confidence and fought hard. It was a great atmosphere at the end of the match."

Del Potro, 19, matched Murray's power from the baseline in the opening two sets but each time faded in the tiebreak.

After venting his frustrations by repeatedly slamming his racket to the ground, Del Potro came alive when the Scot came within two games of victory. Ripping a series of stinging passing shots, he broke Murray for 5-4 and wrapped up the third set with a crisp forehand winner.

Both players appeared reluctant to snatch control of the match in the fourth until Murray pounced on a forehand error by Del Potro to earn two match points.

The first went begging but the Scot let out an almighty roar when a Del Potro's backhand floated wide on the second.

Nadal booked his semi-final berth by defeating Mardy Fish 3-6 6-1 6-4 6-2.

Nadal has without question been the best player in tennis this year and last month overtook Roger Federer at the top of the world rankings, ending the Swiss star's four-and-a-half-year reign at number one.

The five-time grand slam champion earned that honour just a day after claiming his first gold medal at the Olympics, which marked his ATP-leading eighth title of the year.

Nadal went into this quarter-final clash against Fish having never lost to the American but suffered a setback when he lost the first set 6-3.

That proved to be the only blip for the 22-year-old, however, as he took the next two sets and in the seventh game of the fourth set broke Fish's serve to go 5-2 ahead.

SCOTTISH TENNIS STAR MAKES THE US OPEN SEMI-FINALS

A fantastic headline in honour of Scotland's No1!!

Andy has indeed made his mother, family, Dunblane and all of Scotland, extremely proud today! No doubt the 'British' media will struggle to recognise the achievement, but that's the evil we live with on a daily basis. The Scottish public and tennis fans all over the world recognise Andy Murray as a true global star.

The best bit is, there's potentially another two matches to enjoy and marvel at Scotland's finest sportsman!

2

boxfan,

los angeles 04/09/2008 03:49:51
Calm down-calm down! The boy done good and yes it's great to be proud of him but there's still a lot of work to be done! And have you forgotten about a certain cyclist who won three gold medals-surely he is scotland and britains number one.

What do you really mean by the 'evil' media? Is just that your need for recognition as a scotsman is not met? Is it really evil when some commentator doesn't recognise the guys scottish? It's not actually as if he's recommending scottish babies be beaten up is it? Relax and enjoy being on the winning side for once. You can actually relax for once knowing that Scotland has the best sportsmen in the UK right now. Take a breath and enjoy...

As for the rest of the world identifying Andy Murray.. well in the USA where I live they are quite level about him. They think he has a great tennis brain, great fitness and skills. But that he has some way to compete with Nadal. They certainly don't recognise him as a global super star!!! They have far too much going on of their own. Ever heard of the Williams sisters? Or of Michael Phelps?

Andy's status might change though and that would depend on a Grand Slam win... go on son do us proud ya wee stotter.

The Pict.,

# 2 Boxfan. Obviously you have no idea that Scotland's sportsmen, Inventors etc etc. are not recognized by the English (British)media that AJ Fife
calls evil,a word that your president reserves for any non-born again christian.
BRITISH IS ENGLISH everywhere in the world if you didn't know it and we SCOTS will never accept de-nationalisation.
So let's call Michael Phelps and the Williams sisters MEXICAN in your media and I'm sure you'll be very happy.
4

!Ya basta!,

04/09/2008 04:27:50
AJ and The Pict - You really need to calm down here guys. If you want to rant at the bias of the British media go to a relevant website. PS The Guardian report today, and probably others, does recognise his achievement. I think you will also find many English people rooting for Murray.

Back to the tennis though. To now be ranked No. 4 is a brilliant achievement. Murray played a great game yesterday and I think he has a chance, albeit an outside one, of beating Nadal, who will beat Fish. Murray loves this surface, wil have learnt from the Wimbledon thrashing and Nadal had a wee hiccup in the last round so he is human. With Djokovic looking tired and Federer still misfiring, Murray has an opportunity here. Let's hope he can go all the way.

Good luck to you son.

Joanna,

Cambs, England 04/09/2008 07:27:37
Great match by Andy - brilliant that he's thro' to the semis.

Good also, that both players behaved like sportsmen, despite a previous 'handbags clash' that the media hyped up. I think Del Potro is going to make us sit up and take notice very soon. Andy is already doing that.

Good luck Andy!

Boswall,

It's a real shame for Andy that he has hangers on like AJ Fife who clearly couldn't give a t0ss about anything other than his nationality.

He's British by the way.

The Scottish thing might be impressive not for the fact that my granny is the Scottish #5 and my cat (Socks in case you were wondering) the #7.

Every article on this site gets hi-jacked by nats who want to put their own wee nationalistic spin on things. They will eventually 'kill off' legitimate posters as I for one am getting very tired of the whining drivel they spout.

'Evil we live with on a daily basis?' What utter nonsense....
8

Lady Golightly,

Flushing Meadows 04/09/2008 08:35:58
Take no notice of AJ of Fife aka Alex Salmond's footstool and boot licker. Andy Murray doesn't need or want embarrassing 'fans' like him.

Andy Murray is being praised on his achievement of getting through to the semis of the US Open on all the 'evil' British media sites, despite what the kids in AJ's class are saying. Don't listen to them AJ, we know that puberty is a difficult time, but you'll get through it.
9

Scotish Exile,

Watch him get his ass whipped by a real tennis player, just like Wimbledon.
He is Scottish by birth, but he has spent hee haw time here and will no doubt be a tax exile before long, if indeed he isn't one already.
Pity he didn't put the same effort into the Olympics, what an EMBARRASSMENT that was!

Great result for the guy. I wish he would stop the fist pumping lark though - it's toe curling to watch
11

Venachar,

Fine and well done getting to the semi-final. However what was clear last night yet again is that when he does get in front he cannot kill off an opponent. This at present is what separates Andy Murray from those ahead in the world rankings. Potro got a second wind and it could easily have gone to 5 sets.
He won't beat Nadal playing so many drop shots or backhand slices.
Good luck to Andy anyway, it is all good experience.
12

Shaken,

So much negativity people!!

The ony pseudo Brit that done good at this tournament was Rusedski (final) and you can't really call him British...

The Murray family are very well kent within the Scottish tennis scene so this is really about the local boy who is taking on the world.

This isn't about Nats except Nat(ural) talent.

Detractors should get a sense of perspective.

13

veryoldbluefan,

Borehamwood 04/09/2008 09:20:12
Well done, Andy.

It was obvious by the way you behaved when you missed a point you should have made, that you did not rant and rave. In the past, you cursed and swore at everyone - your coaches, the sun, the spectators etc. This was exactly what John McEnroe said about you. Conserve your energy for the play and not for the emotions.

One weakness still prevails, however. You have a great reluctance to put away a strong overhead smash. This goes back to last year's problems with your wrist. But every day gets better.

Play against Nadal the way you did against Wawrinka and you WILL go ALL the way. Everybody, you heard it first here.

No more carping. Fantastic result. British Andy, you are justifiably world no4
14

AJ Fife,

A nice wee haul this morning! As per usual, the Clan McGullible are in evidence this morning, with the chief biter, Boswall, living up to all expectations!!LOL

Once again, it's a remarkable achievement for a Scot to reach the semi-final of the biggest tennis tournament in the world. The match against Nadal is a mouthwatering prospect. Andy will have to cut out his dodgy service games, and if he does that, Nadal will be there for the taking.

Scotland's No1 to win in 5.......

Class On Grass,

11 - cant put away a game when in front? He has managed to do just that last night, elevating himself to 4th in the world.
He has also (once again) managed to overhaul a 2 set deficit, but didnt allow that to happen last night.

Having said that, he made too many unforced errors, and his throw-up was a bit squint. If he can improve these he has a chance against Nadal.
Hopefully he'll produce his best, he's doing us all proud.

16

PatG,

Different class Andy. #4 in the world......what an acheivement. Scotland is proud of you. Onwards and upwards.

King Richard IV,

It's all good n'that no,but Nadal would hardly be "Sh!ting his sell at the prospect of facing someone not known outside the U.K or the tennis circuit!
18

Venachar,

04/09/2008 10:07:48
#15 He should have finished him off in the third set, not the fourth! What two set deficit? We are not talking about previous matches. That last set could have gone anyway. Both players were 40-0 down on their own serves in the last few games of the set and were broken. Potro got a second wind in that set but he really should not have been allowed the oportunity.
You could see the frustration on the faces of Andy's support team the way the match went.
19

AJ Fife,

04/09/2008 10:17:15
Scotland's No1 could win the next 5 US opens, discover cures for all types of cancer between points, solve world poverty at the interval and sort out global warming during a toilet break - and some of the posters above would still stick the boot in!!!

And they say Scots have a chip on their shoulder.......
20

Joanna,

Cambs, England 04/09/2008 10:22:52
Phew - really pleased that Rafa Nadal is through against Mardy Fish. That was a tough time to play a match - it didn't finish until 2.10 am.

This is what Nadal has to say about Andy Murray:

"It's going to be very difficult, I'm going to have to play my best," Nadal said. "He's coming with big confidence. He's doing very well. I expect a very tough match."

The World No 1 doesn't underestimate Murray so I don't think others should. I'll go along with Rafa's view on this, I think it will be a tough match for both players.

Its a shame they couldn't have met in the final but maybe in the Aussie Open :))

Good Luck Andy! Vamos Rafa!!

21

AJ Fife,

04/09/2008 10:28:30
Well said Joanna - easily the most sensible poster on the Scotsman, especially when discussing the colour coordination issues of Nadal and Djokovic!

Rafa is a class act and pays due respect to his opponents. Did you notice the gracious way both Murray and Del Potro conducted themselves during and at the end of the match? A lesson for us all there.....
22

Class On Grass,

Court-side, Flushing often 04/09/2008 10:46:42

#18 Sorry. To clarify, I meant that Andy didn't allow a 2 set advantage slip away, still winning the match albeit losing the third and managing to lose service games and giving Potro a barrowload of break points in the 4th. At least he managed to win them back, showing his determination to win.
There is definite room for improvement, and I hope he serves better against Nadal,
but Scots never do things the easy way. Dont get down on him, he's improved a lot, and hopefully will continue in the same vein.
More power to his wrist, to paraphrase an old saw.

All the best to Jamie in another mixed doubles final as well.. (Doesn't seem to be such a big headline)

23

Joanna,

Cambs, England 04/09/2008 10:49:34
AJ

They both played well, Murray had the edge and his greater experience and determination got him through :) But, I think Del Potro is an up and coming tennis star and is one to watch. At the age of 19 he gets to the quarters of the US Open, unbeaten in 23 matches and moving swiftly up the world rankings, he's going to be a top player soon. Maybe, this is the start of another legendary tennis rivalry between Murray and Del Potro.

Although Murray has said that Del Potro apologised to him for previous comments, so maybe it will be a friendly rivalry like Nadal and Federer :)
24

AJ Fife,

04/09/2008 10:53:48
Joanna#23,

I think Del Potro was paying homage! Andy showed him who was boss.

Did you like the bits when Andy did the old dropshot/lob combination? The Argentinian was scramblin' aboot like an auld jakey in the gutter!!! LOL
25

Joanna,

Cambs, England 04/09/2008 10:58:24
"I think Del Potro was paying homage! Andy showed him who was boss"

Or maybe they've just both grown up a bit!

If Andy tries his drop shot too many times on Rafa - he will be punished for it - just like at Wimbledon. He also needs to work on that second serve, its still a weakness of his game.

I'm looking forward to it - could be a nail-biter! Its wierd I want Rafa to win the US Open but I wouldn't be sorry to see Andy in the final. Have to see how it pans out! :D
26

AJ Fife,

04/09/2008 11:29:16
Joanna,

I think the combination was specially designed to get the lumbering Del Potro knackered asap!! It certainly worked.

Andy will have a different strategy for taking care of Nadal.......he just has to execute it! Andy knows the strength of Nadal for sure, and the great thing about Murray, is that he consistently learns from previous defeats. Yet another plus mark of a potentially great champion, don't you think!

However, Nadal is the World No1 and it'll be tough beyond belief, but Scotland's No1 keeps on coming up with ways to win.....
27

Joanna,

Cambs, England 04/09/2008 11:41:25
I'm sure Andy and his team will be watching Rafa's matches and looking for weaknesses to try and exploit. No doubt, Rafa and his lot do the same.

I think Rafa will win this match but he's been looking a little tired and Andy might just sneak through.

I noticed that Andy was wearing his auld but comfy clothes again (they must be getting a bit whiffy now :)) and that Del Potro looks like he could be a bit vain. That was his downfall, more concerned with his appearance than the game. Andy can always exploit that and if he stands upwind of his opponent he's onto a winner for sure!! :D
28

Joanna,

04/09/2008 11:42:55
Or should that be downwind? Well, whatever, once the opponent gets a sniff he's had it!
29

AJ Fife,

04/09/2008 11:46:22
"Del Potro looks like he could be a bit vain"

He certainly did and I thought he had the look of a Sicilian hitman - kind of menacing! But I'll tell what, Del Potro was the slowest walker in between points in the history of tennis - like death warmed up.......
30

Aren't you guys forgetting the English Lawn Tennis Assoc put up a lot of money to help with his training. That's why he is where he is. And even tho I am a Nationalist I respect the performance of the Lawn Tennis Assoc in giving him a bank roll regardless of the fact he is a Scot. Pity we can't get the rest of the system sorted out as far as a level playing field for North Britain, but it may get better if the Tories replace the current incompetent Westminster Scots Labour Mafia.
32

Joanna,

Cambs, England 04/09/2008 12:31:49
"Del Potro was the slowest walker in between points in the history of tennis"

He definitely was a very slow walker. But, that's because he's worrying about his appearance and trying to look cool. Andy has the edge over him because he couldn't care less about shallow stuff like that.

Part of Federer's game-plan tho' is that he never, ever looks hot and bothered, that's because he doesn't sweat and it intimidates his opponents.

With Rafa the sweat pours off him - the guy is standing in a puddle most of the time. That could be a chance for Andy though, if Rafa slips over in it. Mind you, there's so much of it, there's always a danger that Andy might be the one to slip instead. Its more like a swimming baths after a Rafa match than a tennis court :D :D

" But, that's because he's worrying about his appearance and trying to look cool. Andy has the edge over him because he couldn't care less about shallow stuff like that."

Perhaps Andy needs to worry a little more about the 'shallow stuff', because he certainly needs tidying up a bit.
He had all the dress sense of someone who'd just got out of bed on a Sunday morning, not bothered to shave, popped on some old gear, and gone down to the local park to bash a few tennis balls about with a friend.
Now that's all nice and homely, quaint, and down to earth, but he's on a World stage at these televised tournaments, and his ' look' is all important to his success commercially.
He definitely needs some work done on his appearance, he's becoming a World class player, and he should start looking more like one.
Mind you I'd still like to see him wearing his Scottish baseball hat, with whatever improved gear he does wear, just a gentle little reminder to the World.
I watched the match on a French channel, and the commentators were constantly referring to Andy as 'Britannique', even Anglais, and very occasionally Ecossais. Then at one point one commentator asked the other if he was British or Scottish, and they both laughed.
A small Saltire on his cap would show anyone in doubt, such as French Sports commentators, that Andy Murray is a Scots lad, albeit a scruffy one !
34

Joanna,

Cambs, England 04/09/2008 13:42:28
European Scot,

Agree, he's not the smartest guy on the court is he? I also wish he'd lose the bum-fluff and stop doing the 'Popeye on Spinach' impression when he wins.

I expect he has to wear the logo of his sponsors and cannot get away with wearing what he likes at tournaments now. He who pays the piper calls the tune....

I've been watching it on Sky Sports and he is usually referred to as the Scot, but it is not wrong of the French to call him British either.

35

AJ Fife,

04/09/2008 14:00:27
Joanna,

Mark Petchey is mindful of Andy's nationality and always refers to him as a Scot. He was Andy's coach a few years back, so he knows the lie of the land, but it's a pleasant change for a commentator to report with some accuracy. The tube Overends isn't so great!!

Andy looks jist fine and if wearing the same clobber for two weeks does the trick.....so be it!!:D

Number 9; what is an "EMBARRASSMENT" is the fact that you can't even spell Scottish correctly..., and that you use the word "ass" when not referring to a donkey. Which you obviously are.

You Scots must be in Ga Ga land if you think that we English are trying to claim Murray as one of ours.
He`s Scottish through and through thank you very much, and I want you to know that win or lose he`s all yours.
To be truthful I get p!ssed off with all you Scots wanting to share his glory with us...Read My Lips...he`s all yours.

Come on Raffa, Mallorca is behind you, (unlike the fickle Joanna, Hi Joanna,:)
