Obama urges transfer of troops from Iraq to 'central front'

BARACK Obama yesterday described the situation in Afghanistan as "precarious and urgent" and pressed for more American troops to be deployed there soon.
The Democratic presidential hopeful met Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, on the second day of a trip meant to bolster his foreign policy credentials.

"We have to understand that the situation is precarious and urgent and I believe this has to
be the central focus, the central front, in the battle against terrorism," Mr Obama said.

The senator for Illinois said he believed troop levels needed to be increased and that the US should start planning now for a shift of troops from Iraq to Afghanistan.

"I think the situation is getting urgent enough that we have to start doing something now," he said.

Earlier, Mr Obama discussed the issues of terrorism, corruption and drugs with Mr Karzai.

He has previously criticised Mr Karzai, who has led Afghanistan since the Taleban were toppled in 2001, but said the purpose of his visit was to listen rather than deliver strong messages.

Humayun Hamidzada, Mr Karzai's spokesman, said: "We discussed things at the broad level, we did not discuss in details, but Senator Obama conveyed his commitment to supporting Afghanistan and to continue the war against terrorism with vigour."

Mr Obama is visiting Afghanistan and Iraq as part of an overseas tour that will include stops in Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and Britain.

Meanwhile, his reported choice of venue for a landmark speech in Berlin this week has been criticised by German politicians because of the site's Nazi associations.

Mr Obama is tipped to make his "tough love" speech at the Victory Column – the obelisk crowned with a goddess of victory that marked 19th century Prussian military feats.

But those victories – against Denmark, Austria and France – were seized on by the Nazis and the column became a place of pilgrimage for the regime during the Second World War.

Mr Obama has not confirmed where he will make the speech on Thursday in which he is expected to outline his foreign policy objectives and chastise Germany for not doing more to underwrite the war in Afghanistan.

German media has reported the Victory Column is the venue he has decided on.

"The Victory Column in Berlin was resited by Adolf Hitler and was for him the symbol of German superiority," said Rainer Bruederle, the deputy chairman of the Liberal Party said. "I must question whether Barrack Obama was correctly advised to choose this as a venue for a speech which will set out his vision for world co-operation."

Why? Are you a conspiracy theorist?

It's not like he will win, if he would win he would ruin the country like the congress has been doing for the past 2 years and then you might have something to worry about.

Right of center.. Obama, wants to go electioneering in Europe. His votes don't come from there. Who cares where he is. He and his defeatist attitude should stay there.
I'm sure the troops can see thru him too.
He had criticized Karzai and how Afghanistan is doing. Wonder what that dinner was like?

This "fact finding" trip is long on photo ops and short on substance.
Obama will continue his change policies amounting to little more than nothing, except flee Iraq and go to Afghanistan. This is why he won't be elected. The commanders on the ground, the Iraqis agree they are not yet ready to have the US leave. Wonder what will happen when he returns to the US with some "good news" for the Democrats. Soros and mov on.org will be mighty unhappy.

postmark55..Stay in China, you do not know what you are talking about, and I am sure you would not care to hear the truth. McCain, has been against torture. He does not believe in torture or revenge, BECAUSE of his experiences. You know nothing about the man. He has crossed party lines numerous times to pass legislation, and to co-sign bills.
I don't want an Obama victory, becuse as they say, the man has no idea of what changes he wants...he talks of change and never elaborates.
McCain is also not a war monger..he just doesn't want to leave Iraq for the Iranis or the civil wars and chaos that would happen if we left too early. Funny, the Iraqis feel the same way. They have admitted themselves, they are not fully cappable of being able to do this yet themselves.
So don't go warning me, instead, try and clear up the smog of coal, that is clouding your eyes and ears.

McCain is one of the most repulsive human beings to ever run for the presidency. If that sounds rather harsh then log on to : www.vietnamvetrans against john mccain, to see what I mean.

Another Bush, a man with zero foreign policy experience but who was still voted for, TWICE, even after having started 2 wars.

If you want to know McCain's take on the world outside the USA, then check out the speech he gave in Munich
at the conference for sicherheitspolitik in 2002.
The speech was entitled From Crisis to Oppertunity and in
it he speaks of "The benefits of going to war". That's right the benefits to be gained from reducing a country to rubble and taking control. Oh make no mistake, this is a war-mongering madman, with such a shameful history of cowardice , betrayal and bullying
that it is astonishing that he is running for the Presidency. Wake up America before it's too late.

John McCain has never won a war. John McCain has been wrong, deadly wrong on matters of war, including on the Iraq war. Especially when he supported this President's unnecessary war in Iraq before we had finished our objectives in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama has been speaking for a year about how Iraq was harming our interests for success in Afghanistan and Pakistan and we needed more troops in that region. John McCain? After years of denying Obama's position that we needed more troops in Afghanistan, McCain just this week apparently realized that... we need more troops in Afghanistan.

Nobody can deny that John McCain is a war hero who served our country with extraordinary courage. However, as true as that premise may be, it is equally untrue that John McCain's experience makes him well-versed on strategic decisions on matters of war. In fact, his extensive record has indicated a rather naive understanding.

Asked later about the claim he knows how to win wars, McCain said such knowledge comes from his involvement in "all of the major national security challenges of the last 20 years." He mentioned the Iraq troop increase, the first Gulf War, the crises in Bosnia and Kosovo in the 1990's, and Vietnam, where he was both a Navy pilot and a prisoner of war.

Okay, McCain never made policy or strategic decisions in Vietnam (which he never mentions) and opposed the use of military force in Bosnia and Kosovo. So, again, where exactly did John McCain develop his war-winning abilities?

#11 postmark50-five. Good morning. In this case, it's all about finding reasons NOT to vote for a blackman.

The constant trilling about him having no experience is another ignorant lie, that racists, like lynne etc
cling on to in order to reject him. What is this obsession with foreign policy experience ?. What experience does the idiot son have , apart from starting 2 wars ?.It really does beggar belief.

As for McCain being a War-hero, that really is the icing on the cake. Go tell anyone who served with him he's a hero and see their reaction. This madman spent a total of 20 hrs , not days, hrs in the war zone for which he was awarded an astonishing 28 different medals. Yet all he did was drop nepalm and agent orange on soldiers and civillians alike.

His constant campaigning against Vietnam veterans, and legislation protecting them is appalling and inhuman.
But you will never ever see anything in the cowardly mainstream media that force feeds Americans a fantasy view of the world. No one asking why is he so obbsessed with shuting down the MIA program, something for which he is rightly hated by the Veterans association.

I could go on for hours about this horrific specimen
but it's all over the internet. No, i'm afraid there are some people in America who would rather have this old stuttering, fumbiling war-mongering ex cancer patient as their "Commander in chief" than someone modern, forward thinking, dynamic and hugely popular around the world.

Dam if only he wasn't black.

Personally I think all these poli'tit'ians should spend at least one tour serving on the front lines.

Have we learned nothing from WWI and WWII because idiots like George Dubya and this clown are taking us ever closer to WWIII, the likes of Bush, Obama and Broon should be put in a thin skinned vehicle and sent to Afghanistan with no body armour and dodgy at best weaponry and sent onto the front lines. See if they are as keen then to sent the troops into battle, Furkin idiots the lot of them.

What we as a people need to do is round up every polititian and put the b*stards against the wall.

If its not lying and cheeting they are fleecing the public out of every penny they have and sqaundering it on second homes or employing familly memebers, or acrewing monies for offices, which are sub-letted to other private firms, its a double whammy for the poor old politiican.

Time for a revolution me thinks, a bunch of monkeys could do a better job, there is more politican unrest now than ever before and it seems we are intent every day on invading some other poor b*gger.

Can they not just go and sort out their own friggin mess, the american economy is in sh*t state, the British economy under Broon is in debit up to its feckin eyeball and he wants to a) borrow another 50billion, just like that, like its pocket money for him and b)he expects the people in the east end of glasgwo to vote for him, if they do I will live out the rest of my life in the beleife that there is NO intelligent life in glasgow east.

#18 True , I believe the USA stands on the edge of a precipice and choosing Old Man MCCain would see them fall off into oblivion. As Americans rush to take their money out of their banking system and as tent cities spring up across the country, they have to rely on humanitarian aid from Oman to look after the forgotten people of New Orleans, abandoned by goverment. A goverment that tried to insit the aid was channeled through them, just as Burma did recently and North Korea. The Shek in question told them to go hang with the words "I know how goverment corruption works".

Meanwhile affected states are giving away aid to their prisons and wildlife orginisations, ANYTHING but giving it to the poor and needy who they need to force into the Army. Even Fema have been caught stock-piling aid for over 2 years rather than release it to the poor of New Orleans. This is a recent revelation but it seems to have gone quiet already.

This is the divided battered and ruined country once known as the UNITED states, now abandoned to it's fate .
Obama is their ONLY hope.

#25 Number 6,Germany - I seriously doubt that the Chinese Communist troll currently using the ID postmark50-five has made any such complaint to Number 2 at the Scotsman or anyone else. Like several posters on this site, he equates "Freedom of speech" with "Freedom to abuse" and i suspect this is the reason that a large number of his posts are reported as unsuitable.
He will be fine and reasonable with you so long as your criticism is not directed at the Peoples' Republic of China. Should you dare to voice any such criticism, you will quickly find yourself on the receiving end of some dogs abuse. You will observe from his post #24 that he likes to spread disinformation even if it is particularly unconvincing (the hallmark of the ChiCom trolls which have polluted this site recently). Auch ist er kein Freund der Deutschen.

postmark.... about alBore 21/07/2008 21:36:55
please do not speak if you have such LITTLE command of the facts

AlBore LOST.... by the RULES of the election... HE LOST... plain and simple... no conspiracy...

the AlBorons sponsored an "only re-count THESE areas" campaign.... (and those areas didnt give him the votes he needed anyway) the supreme court ruled SEVEN TO TWO that if you want to recount the votes of a state you must recount the ENTIRE state, with the same rules... (in america we have this pesky little thing called... "equal protection"... which basically says a law that benefits you benefits everyone...) AlBore's minions screwed up by only requesting certain areas to be recounted... it had NOTHING to do with the GOP, GWB, or anyone else... W won the initial count... W won the mandated recount (by a LARGER MARGIN)... and a 2nd recount had to be requested and paid for by the requestor.... the DNC didnt want to pay to recount the whole state, so they picked certain counties that they thought could turn the election in their favor...

the GOP was busy doing the same types of things the DNC was doing... when the DNC spokesman came out and said... "we are only requesting these counties. if the GOP wants any other counties counted, they will have to request them".... HINT: the GOP didnt want ANY counties recounted, they had won all of the counts up to that point... and simply wanted the results certified... so the GOP simply sat on their hands... waiting for the clock to run out...

and the time for requested recounts ran out... at that point, the GOP started pointing at the law, and saying that
1) you cant pick what areas you want recounted, its ALL counties or NONE... (equal protection)
and 2) time has run out to request those additional recounts

supreme court ruled 7-2 on "equal protection"
supreme court ruled 5-4 that according to Florida state law, time had run out for the DNC to request a second full statewide recount

#33 if my head was in the sand I wouldnt be able to do very much, let alone post here or indeed learn a little about the World.
For instance in my fairly wide travels (have you ever left the USA?) I have found that most people, muslims included just want to get on with their lives and live as freely as they can and do well. I dont think "they" are out to get me, because I refuse to take in the propaganda that comes from the media on a daily basis.
I'll say again - you are a sad little man if you spend time worrying about mad muslims who want to kill you. You should spend less time looking at CNN and Fox.
Little tip for you as an American (same goes for the Brits) - get out of the muslims countries and some of them may stop trying to kill you.

"bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb iran...."

it was a JOKE.... I'll give you that it was in questionable taste... but a JOKE none the less....

it was like Reagan's live mike "we commence bombing the soviets in 5 minutes"...

the problem with Obama is his half baked ideas dont stand up to the light of scrutiny... WHO is going to pay for his grand plans???

obamas health care... are you ready to shoulder the burden of $1200-1500 in additional taxes per tax payer per year to cover that?... THAT is what it is going to cost...

obama's "new era of service".... $450 BILLION another $1500 per year for every american taxpayer or no...

throw on top of that a rollback in bush tax cuts... effectively that is another $3000 per year even if those tax bumps are exempted from the lower wage earners, the lower wage earners WILL PAY THEM because those who DO NOT get the exemption will pass that additional burden on to those who get the Obama shelter.... thereby passing that tax on in the form of higher taxes and lower compensation....

THAT is $6000 per year per tax payer... where are you going to come up with THAT kind of cash?

or is thinking ahead not really your strong suit?

WASHINGTON (al-AP) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday the war in Iraq is “lost,” triggering an angry backlash by Republicans, who said the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops. The bleak assessment - the most pointed yet from Reid - came as the House voted 215-199 to uphold legislation ordering troops out of Iraq next year.
