Mining boom paints too rosy a picture of UK plc

HOORAY for mining stocks! Helped by the latest surge in metal prices, mining shares have soared in the past month, lifting the FTSE 100 back , if only briefly, above 6,000 last week.
But is this not a case of the tail wagging the dog? For some time I have been concerned at the accuracy of the Footsie as a rough and ready barometer of "the health of UK plc".

As this index has fallen just 12 per cent from its high last year, ...
