YOU may have read breathlessly introduced extracts in the papers – "the most ill-natured interview in literary history" screamed the Independent – but if so, all the more reason to listen to the recorded reality, in which the writer casually swats his (three!) interviewers like flies. Of course Waugh is un-PC, and his views are eccentrically misanthropic, but what you get, if you listen with an open mind, is the sense of a humane and self-critical man.
