WOOD Group, the Aberdeen-based energy services giant, gained 4 per cent to 402p yesterday as oil prices came off the boil but remained around the $130 a barrel mark.

Elsewhere in the sector, Edinburgh-based oil and gas explorer Cairn Energy added
21p to 2,583p, while Aberdeen-based Venture Production inched up 2p to 766.5p.

Axis-Shield nudged up 7p, or 2.5 per cent, to 290p after it said it had received notice of approval of its patent application covering its Afinion diagnostics kit technology.

The patent grant, which follows similar approvals in Europe and Japan, ensures that the disposable cassette system and the key elements of the detection technology employed in the Afinion desk-top analyser are protected from copying by third parties.

Over on the Alternative Investment Market, Terrace Hill, the Glasgow-based property firm, dipped 0.5p to 49.75p as it named Jon Austen as its new finance director.

Austen, who joins the company from property business Goodman Group, will take up the post on 1 September. He replaces Tom Walsh, who will step down from the board of Terrace Hill and take up the new role of deputy finance director.
