Breaking news: McGeady signs new Celtic deal

CELTIC winger Aiden McGeady has signed a new five-year contract with the Scottish champions.
The 21-year-old Republic of Ireland winger received the club's player of the year award last night for his impressive season with Gordon Strachan's men.

Chief executive Peter Lawwell told www.celticfc.net: "Our priority has always been to try to keep our best players at the club and the board is delighted to support Gordon in his plans for the future by securing Aiden on this long-term agreement."

Newcastle were among the clubs to have been linked with the skilful wide man, but he has consistently stated he views Celtic Park as the best place to develop.

An 18-year-old McGeady scored on his debut for Celtic in 2004 and he has now made 158 appearances for the club.

He scored eight goals last season as Celtic won their third consecutive title and was voted the Clydesdale Bank Premier League player of the year.

The Glasgow-born player follows Scott McDonald in signing a five-year deal this summer.

Lawwell added: "Aiden's performances in recent seasons have made him the outstanding player in Scottish football and clearly we are delighted that he has committed his long-term future to the club.

"It is particularly satisfying that Aiden has become such a success having come through the ranks of our youth development programme.

"While he himself deserves immense praise for all he has done, he is also a real tribute to all those people who have assisted his development including, of course, the great Tommy Burns.

"With Scotland's player of the year in Aiden McGeady and the SPL's top scorer Scott McDonald having now agreed new extended contracts, we are delighted that we have secured the services of two of the finest players in Scotland.

"Clearly, we will also continue to look to make quality additions to our squad and we are pleased to have done this in recent days with the signing of Georgios Samaras, someone who was so crucial to our success last season."

very few comments so far. are the celtic faithful still examining the article to find some anti-hoops slant to the writing perhaps, before launching into a rant??

anyway, good luck to aiden - any interview ive seen he has always struck me as being pretty down to earth and level-headed, and the more entertainers on show in the spl the better (and while alan hutton is playing in the premiership, i can see him staying put at parkhead for a while!)

3 - McGeady v Hutton, they have played against each other many times over the last four seasons. On less than a handful of occasions did Hutton walk off the field with is dignity intact. That you should latch onto these few occasions and completely ignore the majority of them says a lot. PS - imagine what kind of torture Aiden would have put him through if Hutton was playing left back and Aiden - as a naturally right-footed player - was on his favoured right.

Doesn't 'Bear' thinking about,does it?

Fact is there isn't a better wide midfielder in Scotland.

7 goals and 19 assists ,superb on either wing with either foot and some great entertainment last season.

Everyone who pays in to support their team , how many individual players are "worth the admission money?"

I believe McGeady IS, over the course of a season.Players like that don't come along often .

The respect his play has from his peers says it all. That matters more than armchair fans who believe what they read in the press ,watch/listen to tv/radio commentators or cannot entertain the opinions of others if they differ from theirs .

How many have seen the guy play ?I don't mean on tv as I don't think you can really tell unless you are there.

This may be why Rangers fans don't rate him although I doubt it(and yes he hasn't always had his best games against Rangers)and also may be why I would pick him over Cuellar as I don't see him every week .


Anyway if Celtic make a better signing before the start of the season I'll be surprised and of course ecstatic.

come on man, no need whatsoever to bring the bigotry angle into it.

mcgeady's only 21, still a boy, still learning, he's got years ahead of him. staying at Champions Celtic does not show a lack of ambition - regular champions league football, a full international, now probably a very tidy wage packet - not bad for one so unambitious.

too many times we've seen players leave Celitc too early only for it all to go t!ts up - Liam Miller, Shaun Maloney, also Alan Hutton at the Gers (though its early days and i hope it works out for him - reflects well on the SPL).

if he stays till his mid-late 20s then goes to a top english or european club a la Kenny Dalglish then imagine what a player he could be then. though i hope he stays at celtic and becomes a legend. we're not a selling club remember, no need to try and flog the family silver.

why would a scottish football fan try to advocate selling the best player in the country? unless you're terrified of him handing out more rinsings over the next 5 years.

If only he could pick a man out with a cross then he would be great. He has great pace and lots of tricks but his final ball is more in hope than judgement. This separates him from the truly great players that can put the ball on a sixpence ie Beckham or Giggs. Still good luck to him and if he has a good 1st half of the season then his new contract will inflate his price and he may get a move South.

Interesting to note that no clubs attempted to sign McGeady this summer.

There was some rumours regarding Sunderland but thats about it.

This is strange considering how talented the hoop fans believe McGeady to be.

McGeady appears content with looking good against the Falkirks, StMirrens & Inverness Caly's.

Its clear that McGeady lacks the bottle or the ambition to play at a higher level.

Probably both.

When McGeady scored a his first goal for Celtic, a crisp winning volley against Hearts at Tynecastle, Martin O'Neil praised his performance in the post match interview saying that he was young but had the potential to become a big, big player for the football club.

Looks like he was correct.

Close season, and to be honest I forgot his name.

Still, another five years at CP is probably the right decision for the player to make.

He is a Celtic man.

Although I prefer the team playing in blue, he will be a thorn in our side for a while.

Glad he is staying in the SPL, as the OF game is still the biggest game in Europe (even if it is not the most beautiful).


McGeady.... hope you have your adult sized shin pads ready for August 31st.

A player does not have to be "absolutely superb" in order to "run ragged" round Hibs defence.

Most SPL players seem capable of this.

I do agree with your fist point, he's a turn coat, a traitor and an absolute bounder!

Obviously every team gets its injury problems but over the years ours seem to be far worse.
Thats Lafferty and now Smith who has just returned added to the already lenghty list.

Is it just me or is does there seem to be something fundementaly wrong with the backroom staff at Ibrox?

I know its pre season and i know this post will be met with triumphant " i told you's" from the tims on this site but im getting severly concerned.

This pre season was meant to be all about progressing but as far as i can we are a couple of players away from staying still.

Anyone else share my concerns?

#21 a few fair points, some i could agree with some i couldn't agree with.

The bigitory thing- yes and no. Celtic fans (esp away from home) play the bigitory card for 90 mins, i would rather they stopped as i'm sure most others would. Its part of the fabric of the club so it it a relevant point about the type of people he is representing.

I think now would be a great time for him to move. As many point out and i won't disagree with he is one of the top five players in the spl. Thats the problem- he has been playing in the spl for what 3-4 seasons now, he's been there, seen it, done it and got a few league winners medals. Stagnation will be a real problem as he gets bored of the same old, same old.

Your correct he can get CL games every season, the problem is celtic only put in a shift at parkhead, away from home the team is posted missing. Thats what 3-4 one off games a season he will get a decent opportunity to display his talents in europe. The last few seasons celtic have got further than they probably deserved due to a few very lucky last minute goals at home. Once the celebrations have died down Aiden will have realised this in the cold light of morning.

The EPL would give him the opportunity to be consistant in the best league in europe week in/ week out. To do this he will need to focus and learn for 90 minutes- two things he doesn't need to do every week in the spl. He would need to cope with setbacks as well as building on successes. The gfa protect the OF and ensure that they will win no matter what, in the EPL he won't have that protection unless he is at Man utd or arsenal or liverpool.

Footie players now are more like racehorses,the slightest tweak and out for a month..I understand the need for optimum fitness in our speed obssessed modern game,but when I was a lad (Cue the Hovis theme) players were ever present and the footie was better..Discuss?

JJ yup In the course of my job I get to meet a few famous folk..Got the set list from Liam Howlett after playing Oxegen Festival in Punchestown last week..Also met Richard Ashcroft..nice wee guy..Yup,I thought he'd be tall but as I'm 6'0 and I was looking down on him..He is officially a tiddler!

30 - McGeady would be well advised by anyone with his best intentions at heart, to stay with Celtic for at least one more season. Moving to England aged 23 or 24 when he's more mature, physically and mentally will be better for him in the long run. Correct me if Im wrong, but Dalglish didnt move until he was mid twenties or Strahcan (27). Things have changed and even the bottom teams in that league can fill their squads with overseas players.

Ps - if anyone doubts how far McGeady could go in the game, then consider that Jermaine Penant has been with Liverpool for the last 2 seasons. McGeady is his equal at least. However, he'd likely still be on the bench for most gameslike Penant and that wouldnt do him any good at all.

Any trouble and I just say my dad will bring the Rangers over for a friendly game with full support. Everyone backs off. Don't know why, just singing and dancing lined up.

My first pair of real boots were the ones they were throwing away at Stirling Albion.

Nae idea aboot the maker, but they were magic.

Good bit of business for Celtic...and shows foresight. Personally I think he is over-rated at the moment but that's scottish football for you...find a decent youngster and all of a sudden he is a world superstar.

I'll respectfully disagree with the green element on the Hutton McGeady debate as whilst McGeady is clearly the more skillful - all his skill couldn't get him out of Huttons back pocket (metaphorically speaking of course).
