Published Date: 26 June 2008
CELTIC chief executive Peter Lawwell has promised more new signings this summer.
The Scottish champions are chasing a fourth consecutive title and manager Gordon Strachan has been told he will have the funds to strengthen his squad.

The Celtic manager spent part of the summer as a television pundit at Euro 2008, allowing him t
o assess the cream of European talent first hand.

However, Derry City midfielder Pat McCourt is the only new signing so far, while rivals Rangers have already recruited strikers Kenny Miller, Kyle Lafferty and Andrius Velicka. But Lawwell has told fans they have nothing to worry about.

"I can assure Celtic supporters that we are working hard once again to strengthen the squad for the coming season," he said.

"Clearly, we have a squad of high-quality, talented players at the club and we were delighted that this team worked so hard to lift the club's third championship in a row.

"However, it is always important to look to the future and therefore we will be doing all we can to support Gordon in his plans and try to ensure that we maintain our position at the top of Scottish football.

"Celtic supporters can rest assured that the Celtic board, as it has done in recent seasons, will continue to support the manager as we try to retain our championship and once again aim to make an impact in the Champions League."

Celtic have been linked with several players and Lawwell said the club were working hard behind the scenes to secure their targets.

He told the club's website: "We have only made two bids for players, one of which was accepted for Patrick McCourt (the other, for Lafferty, was rejected]. Any other claims that we have made bids for other players are nonsense.

"Clearly, we do have our own real targets and we are working to secure these."

Lawwell stressed that supporters should not believe that every player the club is linked with is a genuine target in a summer which has seen them reportedly chasing James McFadden of Birmingham, Austria's Martin Stranzl, Dutch defender Khalid Boulahrouz and most recently Mariusz Lewandowski, the Polish international who has stated his own interest in moving to Celtic Park.

"As is the case in every close season, particularly with Celtic, press speculation has linked many names with the club," added Lawwell.

"While the club chooses to conduct its business quietly and in private, there is very little we can do about this speculation.

"However, it should be said that there have been numerous players mentioned who have never interested the club and who we have had absolutely no contact with."

Funds are available for Strachan, with Celtic guaranteed a place in the lucrative Champions League group stages.

Well done The Scotsman for publishing the whole statement.

The Record missed out a lot of it, most notably:

"We have only made two bids for players, one of which was accepted for Patrick McCourt (the other, for Lafferty, was rejected]. Any other claims that we have made bids for other players are nonsense."

I wonder why?

Possibly due to the Record only being interested in sensationalist story lines and poor reporting? Or do you think there might be a more sinister motive KT?

It's not as if the Record is highly rated as a bastion of good journalism.

The squad that finished the season is more than strong enough to win the SPL this year. all those players are in the prime of their playing days and in the case of McGeady, McDonald, McManus, Caldwell should be even better this year.

I would be suprised if we didn't make any signings, but I'm against signing players for the sake of it.

#5 Celtic don't need to sign any new players imo, unless we sell any who are already there. The great revelation of last year was the midfield pairing of Hartley and Robson. McGeady and Nakamura remain the best wingers we could possibly get. McDonald and Venegoor of Hesselink provided enough firepower up front, whilst McManus and Caldwell are the most solid defensive partnership in the country.Mark Wilson will replace Lee Naylor, who is regrettably a spent force, whilst we only got in Andreas Hinkell a few months ago. I hope we'll get Samaras on a permanent deal, but failing that, we will have to get another striker.

Glad Peter Lawwell has pointed out that only 2 bids had been made for the fans to realise that most of, or all media stories of major signings or rejections are not true. As a PLC company any major signings or engagements to the Board etc must be intimated to the Financial Authorities before making them public. So the first you will hear it will when the Club realise the story.

Seems like the GFITW are getting nervous about the lack of building for next season as they know that Rangers were the better team last year and that they sneaked it due tae the fixture congestion ! Rangers are already stronger and Celtic are still struggling tae off load the dead wood like Gravesen, Balde, Sno, Donati and VOH. #45 - lay off 'Cardinal' Keevins, he's still struggling to come to terms with no longer being the solitary "Celtic-minded" football writer prepared to put his head above the parapet.

The Record's sports desk is now green and white striped; things are so one-sided at the Herald one of the sports sub editors is known as "Billy, the token H@n" and there are allegedly, no Rangers fans on the Scotsman's sports desk. At least The H@n's fitba writers still wear bowler hats and white gloves and carry umbrellas.

So poor old Keevins, from being, in Jimmy Reid's memorable phrase: "A man alone - like a Protestant in Croy", is just another of the gang. How are the mighty fallen.

We don't need to look through the wee red book for results - we won 3 in a row mate and we're going to make it 4!

Also your comment "Rangers have already recruited strikers Kenny Miller, Kyle Lafferty and Andrius Velicka." Is that "Kiss the Celtic badge" Miller your talking about? The one we couldn't get shot of fast enough? As for "Laugherty" I bet he won't get a game because of 22nd choice Boyd, and finally if Velicka is "strengthening" the squad then its some squad you had!

I quite agree, you look at what the Gers have signed and I really don't see these guys as adding much to the players they already have! I rate Miller as an overall player, but he is not a consistent goal scorer, and if WS continues to play one upfront then where does Miller fit in? Darsh is a much more natural striker, I can only see Miller playing in that role if Darsh is injured, or as a sub, or if the Gers change their formation.

Anyway I'm sure Celtic will sign some players, but I think it's just as important to move Graveson, Baldi and Donati on. We do need an extra striker and midfielder for competition assuming nobody else leaves.

and its very nice that some celtic posters feel they already have the squad to win four in a row. would that be the same squad that was getting lambasted all season by their own supporters for serving up turgid drivel? you boys need to listed to some of the phone-ins to get more of a balanced view of what some season ticket holders think of the squad

Anyway club officials can be very devious when they say "we have not made an offer" All this probably means is that an 'official' offer has not been made but all the background work and initial enquiries will, more than likely, have been made.
It helps to keep the masses happy though.

Ninny Narrow of Ra Peepul, lets test for understanding:

The role of a Chief Exec in an organisation is to maximise opportunity and mitigate risks.

The Sharp Suited Man is clearly playing poker at the minute (barring the signing of McCourt which effectively was a freebie thanks to the 500k we got from ReaRangers signing of Kenny Misser - KERCHING)

there are 2 possible scenarios influencing his hand at the minute.

1) If ReaRangers are allowed into the Champs League they are 80% likely to get pumped out in the pre-qualifiers with Celtic getting 100% of champs league money - possible Risk...decision hold for scenario 2.

2) ReaRangers are 99% likely to get a 2 year Euro Ban for their Manchester Jolly Up. Motherwell assume Scotlands 2nd Champs League with 100% chance that they go out in pre-qualifiers and Celtic get 100% of Champs league money - no risk, no brainer, hold and wait for Uefa decision on 2 year ban for ReaRangers

By holding for scenario 2, you get your A list tx targets as opposed to any not of the same standard. You get a far stronger team and 4 in a row is shooting fish in a barrell = Maximised Opportunity - Great job Mr Lawwell.

In contrast Bainochios reduction in tx war chest from 30m to 6m smacks of risk mitigation on behalf of ReaRangers in advance of scenario 2 coming.

Every one knows it and both a preparing in their own special way.

Raging Ranger Syndrome sufferes wont be able to decipher that though.....such a shame!

A little bit of football education for the dribblers might be in order.

Celtic are straight into the CL – why would they sign players on £25k per week and pay them for two months before the season starts? Big clubs and PLCs do not make elementary fiscal mistakes like that. They sign players towards the end of the transfer window.

The Thread Bears, on the other hand, have to qualify – and we'll know against whom next Tuesday. Wattie has to get his squad in early. That's why he has lashed out £7m for proven quality like Kenny Misser, Laffmyassofferty and Velicka. Excuse me while I roll around the floor laughing.

Or maybe it`s because yer skint and can`t buy anyone until you sell Boruc or McGeady the only players worth anything in your entire squad ! You just have tae hope that Liewell is not too greedy and sells at a reasonable price or else Arty Farty will be having a party in the stands wae Balde and Gravesen ! He has already expressed concerns about the over inflated price tag being talked about and if he doesn`t get his move then he will spit the dummy ... mark my words !

#75 I gave a lot of consideration as to whether I would stump up £20 for that game.

You have to remember, at the time (right up to the Thursday), it was unclear as to whether the game would be played and my concern was that my £20 would go straight to the Gretna administrators.

Celtic announced that they would be holding our money until the fixture was confirmed, that was enough reassurance for me to purchase.

Why they did not give dispensation to give Celtic 3 stands I don't know. These people have no idea how to make money.

I dont think your far of the mark regarding Boruc.
I feel that the holy communion between Boruc & the celtic board is nearing its end.

If he doesnt get his move then he'll make a discommodius threesome with Baldi & Gravesan in the main stand next season.

# Bring them on?
I see once again that you jumped in without thought with your usual nonsense. -"A PLC football club has no obligation to notify anyone if they are in discussions with a player, and have made a bid.
Sorry, but once again just gibberish propoganda."
I won't apologise for informing you are wrong again. If the signing etc would be considered to be of some substance etc the Stock Market must be informed prior to the Company publicised their action. Stick to the childrens' programs on the television.

There is a huge difference in attitudes this summer. Last year all Celtic fans were screaming for new signings. This year not so much - I wonder why?

Personally, I'm pretty happy with the squad we have and the signings we made in January. Also, I would hate for us to go down the route of spending-for-the-sake-of-it á la Rangers (how many mediocre strikers does one club need?).

Signings will come, but there is absolutly no rush. Celtic fans trust both PL and WGS to do the right thing.
84

arthurscross,

Who exactly is this nineinaro fool and why does he think he has a grasp on Celtic's finances? Your posts are utter nonsese and to suggest that Celtic cannot spend before they sell is simply uninformed gibberish.

Read post 69 and reflect ! If Celtic don`t bring in about 6 players after the sale of Boruc then Rangers will get even further ahead than they were last year !
Fixture congestion was your saviour last term and unless you bring in decent players soon then you will be fighting wae M`well for second spot !

Sorry mate, my specialist subject. Read my post again.

Unless there is agreement on both sides to enter into a binding contract, or a contract which is expected by both sides to lead to a binding contract, in the near future, there is no need to disclose.

Discussions and making a bid would not require disclosue, and in fact could be deemed to be misleading in certain circumstances.

Try again, junior

#83....The way most of us see it is that we have a very bright future mate.

The reserves are packed with 19 & 20 year olds who have just won 7 titles in a row.....Ghod bless you Tommy Burns.

Young players who now have 2 years of being in a squad / team with Champions League campaigns under their belts:

Boruc
Brown
Caddis
Wilson
McManus
Caldwell
O'dea
Naylor
Hinkel

Brown
McGeady
Naka
Robson
Hartley
Donati

McDonald
JVOH
Samaras
Killen

If there are more than 2 in there over 30 i'll be surprised, the future is bright Tims.

6 players! So according to you, we need to replace over half of our starting lineup? Get a grip.

Top of our list is a left-back. After that we don't really need anyone. Why spend for the sake of it? Rangers luck of last season will not continue and the retirement of Cheat McCurry will already see you 10 points down.

4 in a row and counting...

Bimbo in Japanese means a down and out, nae money and always lookking for pity, free soup and soap (and that's the polite translation).

This really is fantastic. These bitter knuckledraggers can only afford the likes of Kenny Miller (not good enough for Celtic but apparently good enough for Rangers) and come onto a Celtic thread to laugh at our lack of signings.

Tell you what - make some good signings and we'll start getting worried.

BTW - I'm going to keep the picture of Kenny Miller kissing the Celtic crest on my desk in work. Great man - truly loyal.

You will need a new keeper for starters and then a left back and a decent centre half tae replace Caldwell also two midfielders tae replace Donati, Sno and Hartley(finished) and Brown (maybe) or McGeady (if he moves) as well as a decent striker or two as VOH is poor and loan deal Samaras is also going tae Italy ! I make that at least 6 players needed !

Bilbo - for acquisitions and mergers there is no obligation to disclose, however often agents acting on behalf of the selling party chose to do so through various means (notably the media) to strengthen bargaining postions and inflate the fee(s). It is not uncommon for 3rd parties not involved in the deal to circulate misinformation to influence any discussions which they are aware of if it is of advantage to them.

For example, check Mr Lawwells "aye, we're bidding 3m fo laugherty" and ReaRangers subsequent purchase of a 5 goals a season guy for most of their tx budget.

Most people in business are clever enough to see these things if they occur in negotiations they are party to. However most business don't have business geniuses such as Minty and Bainochio!

OK fool - I'll bite.

Boruc is going nowhere
Cladwell was one of our best players for the 2nd half of the season
Hartly ditto (had your captain fantastic for breakfast twice - remember?).
Donati and Sno are subs. Robson is now our starting midfieder
Brown finished at 23?
JVoH is poor? That's why he is in the Dutch squad.

Seriously - check your facts berore you type this drivel. You look like an uneducated bumbling idiot.

100 - what, that Hibs had already received 2 bids of 4m from Premiesrhip clubs? ReaRangers weren't in the bidding.

At the time Walter Nosurname stated that it was too much of his tx budget last season. Then Minty contradicted with the usual wind and wee-wee of "we could have bought if we wanted to (without a bid?), but weren't prepared to pay him the salary Celtic did as it would shatter our wage structure"

The truth shall set you free Ninny Narrow of Ra Peepul.

Boasting that you've beaten us to the signiture of a Rangers fan......sure is impressive.....

We actually don't need to buy any players for the coming season......we're still good enough to slap you boys down...

Oh and Mr. Lawwell never mentioned yeravina Lafferty as the other player we appraoched....interesting that the above piece has it bracketed....

Anyhow......stand up for the Champions!

It is very worrying, Lawwell was seen coming out of New Bayview yesterday, having just cherry picked from the current, record breaking, East Fife squad!

Why can't the Old Firm leave the Fife alone. It was the same with Davie Kirkwood.
