McManus determined to lead by example

Published Date: 10 July 2008
STEPHEN McManus is determined to repeat his successful debut season as Celtic captain with another championship triumph and can only hope for a less traumatic backdrop than last term.
McManus lifted the Premier League title in May after Celtic clawed their way back into the championship race and avoided a trophyless season, with Rangers claiming both domestic cups.

McManus also had to cope with the deaths of former Celtic midfi
elder and family friend Phil O'Donnell, plus popular coach Tommy Burns.

The 25-year-old spoke movingly about his former youth development boss and first-team coach on the day Burns died, as Celtic prepared for their title decider. But he got the chance to dedicate the SPL crown to Burns when Celtic completed a seven-match winning run at Dundee United.

And he is keen to lead Celtic to their fourth consecutive title after firmly getting to grips with his role.

"It was a challenging year but I just tried to deal with things as best as I possibly could," the Scotland international said.

"There are going to be additional responsibilities, there will be difficult times when you are asked to step up and speak on behalf of the club or players, but it's something that you maybe expect as captain of this club.

"Given what happened last year, that made it all the more important that we won the league and getting that title at the end of the campaign was the main thing for me.

"It was what we had to do and with that in mind, I've enjoyed every minute of being the captain of this club. I just hope we'll be able to do it again this year."

McManus admits it took some time to get to grips with the demands of being captain and the inherent responsibility.

"Everything is magnified, both what you do on the field and off it, you just can't get away from it," he said. "I don't think I've ever had a time when so many people were approaching me in the street, telling me what they thought I should be doing, where we were going wrong and what we were doing right.

"But you need to deal with that and I've been fortunate enough to grow up with it at this club, so you get an idea of what it's about."

McManus could find himself lining up alongside Romania centre-half Gabriel Tamas next season if Celtic follow up their interest in the player, whose agent claims he is keen to move to Parkhead.

However, Auxerre are said to be looking for up to £5million for the 24-year-old and have had no contact from Celtic.

McManus led his team to a sensational championship victory after a heroic fightback. You can't ask for more.
Caldwell was instrumental in that, not just in his defending, but in setting up attacks with passes into the front two.
Both men will be instrumental for both Celtic and Scotland this season.

Conceeded less goals at the back.

Scored more up front.

Won the league 3iarow, 6 of 8.

Nae greetin about fixture list.

Nae "rearrangeing" Manchester City Centre.

Nae "officially dodgy by diktat of Uefa" songs.

GIRFUY, Scotland's shame.

jerrymanders,

Sell your best player but won nothing. 10/07/2008 01:18:09
Ugly Betty and Weirysome conceded more goals in the SPL (6) than The Champions. New defence is obviously required for Rags. Selling Hutton in Jan was a monumental mistake too!!!!!!!!!!!

let us go into the last game knowing a win would be enough, rangers on the other hand needed to score a barra load, as it worked out rangers leaky aged defence let 2 in to the high scoring dons, game over

Your comment "McManus led his team to a sensational championship victory after a heroic fightback" is blatantly incorrect.

The championship victory was most certainly not sensational and is acknowledged as the most hollow of victories following the well documented confusing, controversial decisions from inTIMidated referees and the crushing fixture congestion Rangers were faced with over the last two weeks of the season.

There was no heroic fightback as you put it, just an uneven playing field engineered in part by the cynical Sporting Integrity FC.

As a matter of interest when are Sellick off to Japan for their end of season tour????

Nothing anyone related in anyway with Sporting Integrity FC aka Celtic FC says or writes cannot and will never ever be believed.

Events of last season will come back to haunt you all.

Moving on, I am looking forward to the new season with great optimism as Rangers will start with raw wounds and more than a few scores to settle. we will be more prepared
13

Survivor Of Riots,

10/07/2008 09:26:04
15 - indeed, more prepared from the offski.

Already the RST have raised concerns over the fixture list before the kick off.

Getting the excuses in early.

Now there is preparation!!

7 weeks on and you are still smarting real bad. Great.

Was the season extended for Celtic in 2002/3 when Celtic was faced with similar fixture congestion? Or did the SPL tel Celtic to "get on with it"?

Did you or did you not get an extenstion, even although Celtic was denied on in 03?

Mike McCurry anyone?

yadda yadda..............

If you can´t overcome your rage at the realisation that "2nd is not good enough, but, realistcally it is all we can achieve" then may I be so bold as to suggestthe following remedy:

Find a wall. Get someone to paint a mural of Manchester on it. Then kick it, punch it, throw bottles at it, urinate on it until you start to feel better.

Dealing with your retort;-

2003 was in no way similar to 2008 in terms of fixtures etc

Brines, Smith etc - Aberdeen, St Mirren, Falkirk, Rangers Motherwell etc

It may be your way to abuse a wall with bottles and p1sh (we have all seen your lot do it)but I have no requirement for such a remedy.

You just need to know that we are watching and taking note. Sporting Integrity Fc's time will come soon and I for one am waiting in anticipation.

I can sense Rangers fans, defiant as we know they are even to the point of making fools of themselves, are beginning to realise that their percieved supremacy is just that.

Delusion is the last refuge from the harshly dawning reality that your sick club is the busted pariah of European football and there is no turning away from that without ditching the hate.
22

nineinro,

The busted pariah of Scottish football you say ! Is that why McClelland is the vice chairman of the European Club Association. You bitter mob were consumed with envy yesterday and had the thread closed with your bile and you are unable to take it that we are still the people even after a fan riot at a Euro Final. You will always be in our shadow !
23

Survivor Of Riots,

10/07/2008 10:39:01
Ninny - I think you will find that Celtic refused to give over any board resource to undertake the particular role. Celtic WERE asked first.

McClelland - was he not the guy Minty set up to take the wrap when one of the worst set of accounts ever seen in British Football were published? He then came in and moved 50m from one of his companies to ReaRangers under the banner of "Minty saves the day", but he husny really..has he?

#14 - "how come we heard so much about Rangers fantastic defence all season and they only managed to concede ....eh...er...more goals than Celtics"

hugh, your use of the goals against statistic from last year to pan the rangers defence is slightly misleading for a couple of reasons.

a) it was your supporters who criticised their own defence. they wanted bobo back in the first 11 for goodness sake.

b) you know, and i know that if rangers had played the same amount of games as celtic outwith the league, we would have conced far fewer during the SPL run in. to claim otherwise will make you seem pretty foolish

"Rangers have signed 3 strikers who are current international players"

Out of the 3, 2 are players that we have no fear of facing.
1 Miller was so cra-p you sold him on then we sold him on after discovering what you already knew- he cant score.

2 Lafferty scoring ratio is so poor its a wonder you have paid that sort of dosh for a player who hasnt exactly set the heather alight.

I think your third signing is a decent one and will be a good player but for the other 2, no worries.

Best you be concerned about what quaity we will bring in the next few weeks to put us further ahead of you in terms of quality players.

"Billy looks down at Denis and says .."The only mates I've got today are wearing white shirts.." and trots away...

#30 - my apologies hugh, you obviously weren't alluding to the fact that you think celts are braw and rangers mince. easy mistake to make.

"Many Celtic fans - myself among them - would have liked to see more of Balde. Just because our defence was better than Rangers, it doesnt mean we need to be happy with it." - utter rubbish mate! we both know that at times mcmanus and caldwell were bombscare material. a couple of old firm wins (where incidentally, you conceded 3 goals to rangers so-called ultra defensive line up!) and a very good run-in to the season seems to have clouded your memory. how many occasions at parkhead did big artur keep you in the game?

you say "Rangers failure to compete away from home all through the season meant that they could never be worthy winners of the SPL title". again, thats just your convenient use of statistics - and it ignores rangers gruelling thursday european schedule. the fact that both teams were level on points going into the last game shows exactly how equal the teams were.

ultimately rangers got exactly what they deserved last season. i take issue however with the arrogance of a lot of posters in thinking that celtic were and are streets ahead. maybe time you woke up and smelled the coffee? celtic were turgid for large parts of 07/08 and winning the title just papered over the cracks. the only time WGS's name was shouted about for reasons other than to GTF, was on the last day of the season.

As a season ticket holder at CP, I think Caldwell did have a better season than McManus. McManus may have made less high profile mistakes, but I think contributed less (in a footballing sense at least).

I am amazed that Rangers fans have the audacity to talk about referees! Had Mike McCurry not awarded them a full 3 point for nothing against DU, as well as their dodgy penalty against DU earlier in the season, the league would have been over earlier.

Yes, Aberdeen scored a good goal against us, which was chopped off, but only minutes before Samaras did the same (though this didn't create quite the same media frenzy).

Rangers had their extension. Rangers had their Gretna game called off. Rangers got gubbed fair and square. Get over it, or just get it up ye.

As you point out in the early days of the EC there were some part time playing sides that were in the competition, a lot coming from Eastern Europe.

But the winners of the Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, England, Scotland, W.Germany, Belgium, leagues were all full time clubs.

What may have made it easier to win then was a lucky draw and only playing four aggregate rounds then the final.

I see Captain Fantastic's decision to by pass the ankle opp during the close season in preference to go out on the lash abroad has come back to haunt him.

3 days into pre-season and the ankle has gone again. He now needs stated opp and will be out for 4 months.

Shame, I always think ReaRangers are a poorer team with him in it. They maybe play someone who contributes more now.

Hey Swordsman sort yourself out-imagine having even the slightest sympathy for anyone other than the Hoops-disgraceful open minded behaviour!

Footie is not about breaking down barriers, making friends and enjoying life.

Yours in disgust
