Published Date: 17 June 2008
CELTIC striker Scott McDonald has signed a new five-year contract with the Scottish champions.
The Australian finished as the Clydesdale Bank Premier League's top scorer in his first season with Celtic, who he joined from Motherwell in a £700,000 deal last summer.

His 25 league goals helped Gordon Strachan's side clinch the SPL title and reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Celtic were keen to reward McDonald for his contribution and the 24-year-old was eager to stay with the club.

Chief executive Peter Lawwell told www.celticfc.net: "This is great news for Celtic.

"It is well known that Scott loves playing for Celtic and he has a great affection for the club. He is also someone who performed brilliantly for Celtic last season.

"Our priority is always to keep our best and most committed players and the board is delighted to support Gordon in his plans for the future by securing Scott on this long-term agreement.

"We will continue to do all we can to ensure that Celtic stays at the top of Scottish football."

Same again this season. It'll be interesting to see if he's first choice though. Hopefully a good signing up front is on the way.

Yip a good re-signing, hopefully without any strange clauses! The Gers are bolstering their front line up, the Celts really do need to bring in a couple of strikers to compete.

Great news.

One season wonderboy skippy, wont worry Walter Smith.

Skippy is over reliant on helpfull Celtic minded referees who allow blatent offside goals to stand.

Hope he's first pick for ra tic next season.

Excellent piece of business for Celtic.

Scotland's run away top striker tied into a 5 year deal. I actually expect McDonald to build on last season's performance and go further.
He has proved that he can cut it at a big club and that he can cope with the pressure when the criticism starts flying in.

He, like the rest of The Champions, demonstrated incredible mental strength and ability and will I believe be an even better player next season.

The news just keeps getting better!

While Rearrangers sign players who are no threat to the bovine species with stringed instruments, the Champions extend the contract of Scotland's top striker.

Excellent work, Mister Lawwell, more good news please!

The Crown Jewels have long contracts, Boruc (4 years) McGeady (4 years) and now the countries top scorer (5 years).
What an outstanding tournament Artur has had, rave reviews from the English based pundits and without any shadow of a doubt the best keeper out there.
Be gutted if he left but some great business (yet again) from Lawwell getting him on a long term deal.

Is that SEVEN strikers rearangers have now for the one slot......strange stuff indeed.

A left back and an experienced old head to nurture our very young back-line would be good, Pavleychenko would have me in dreamland.

Interesting turn of phrase.

#8 - chucky, have asked this question before, but assuming ""the crown jewels" (haha!) get sold for a right royal sum (geddit?), how much of the lets say £25M would be entrusted to WGS? and who would replace the pair of them and still enhance the team?

(and don't say deco!)

We've just signed the most proloific striker in Scotland last season on a new 5yr deal, a player we payed 700k for. Rangers buy one of the least prolific strikers in the championship last year,Lafferty, AND Kenny Miller for over £5m between them. Good business by Lawell and WGS. Any one of our strikers could have a higher goal tally at the end of the season than all seven of gers.

4 in a row!!!

#11......£25 Million? You mean if we only sold one of them?.......Great business getting them signed up and if they go, they go with my good wishes.

Three in a row is good and we would really struggle to unearth more gems but we have the right man in position to do just that.

He signed two (Boruc and McD) and coached McGeady into the great player he is turning out to be, whats not to be happy about.

You can stick your Kenny Misser up yer........

#13 I don't think your manager agrees.

Great at scoring against sh!te teams but thats about it, I think he has only ever scored one against us in all his games against us.

McDonald has a good record in BIG games and against decent opposition domestically.........and he works his ample butt off for the cause.

i reckon most of the £50M will get pocketed by the plc. and you ain't going to replace them with even equal players. not a great scenario for celtic fans

i am impressed that you reckon WGS "coached McGeady into the great player" - were you also coming out with that sort of line when the natives were shouting for strachan to get the bullet last year?

Those two goals were probably worth £10 Million or thereabouts.

#20 Aye, OK, he's pash........hahahaha......what a throbber.

#18 I was slaughtered on here for telling all who would listen at the time (Nov, Dec, Jan) that when we got our full backs back from injury then normal service would be resumed..........I was correct.

Strachan knows what it takes to be a great player in McGeady's position because he was one.

Firstly, a retraction;
Last Friday, (on a thread I can't seem to find anymore), I suggested that Kenny 'First Touch' Miller had celebrated his debut goal for SPL Champions Celtic by kissing the badge on his shirt...

...after studying the video evidence, I have to admit that I was wrong...

...He DID NOT kiss the badge during his exuberant celebrations in front of the Rangers away support after scoring his debut goal for SPL Champions Celtic against his former club Rangers...

...Between screaming out his joy whilst racing towards the Rangers away support and punching his fist ebulliently in the air in celebration of his debut goal for SPL Champions Celtic against his former club Rangers, there WAS NO badge kissing to be seen...

...I can only offer my obviously aberrant memory of this moment in time in mitigation...

...that should do it...

...if however there is anybody who finds that this retraction is not accurate or detailed enough in some way...

...Firstly, I would like to point out that whilst timely retraction can save you a lot of hassle in some situations, it is not guaranteed to be foolproof 100% of the time, and can sometimes result in a messy situation...

...and secondly, if you don't like it you can kiss my badge.......
25

Sláine,

Top 5 Goalkeepers at the moment...

...Boruc, Buffon, Casillas, Cech & Van Der Sar...

...Order is alphabetical and ranking is of course subject to form at any particular moment in time...

...#20 Bemusedbawbag - "a decent shot stopper, thats it" :-p hahahahaha...

...forgive me for being obtuse, but I was always under the impression that that was the PRIMARY function and a sort of pre-requisite for a goalkeeper, n'est pas?.......

Further to my enquiries, Miller was found not guilty of acting in suchinnapropriate behaviour as described by your previous post.

Miller is now on probation & will hopefully be accepted back into the community befire too long.

Thanks for clearing this up, you can put that badge away for now.

#31 JVOH scored 20 this season (blighted by injury) he scored against the h*ns to win 2-1 and he scored to win the leagus against DU. What goals has Nohope scored which were more important? Oh, He also has TWO Championship medals in 2 seasons.

#30 Boruc better than Robinson? My mum's better than Robinson, for crying out loud.

Boruc's very good; Gordon's about as good and McGregor's getting there. None of them can reasonably be mentioned in the same breath as van der Saar, Buffon, Reina or Cech though. Still means Boruc's probably worth in the £10 range so take it if you can get it.

I think he's good enough to go to the EPL, maybe to somewhere like Man City or Everton. Don't think he's top 4 - more like Given's sort of standard.

As for McGeady...you've got to be kidding. Hardly scored any goals and didn't set that many up either (the stats were discussed on one of these threads a couple of weeks back). Good at keepie-uppie? Oh yes. Have him in my 5-a-side team? Undoubtedly. But McDonald, Robson, McManus, Boruc and even arguably Nakamura had more to do with Celtic winning the season this year.

Now, before I get accused of being a blinkered Ger, I'd have him in our team because he's better than Beasley or Novo, but he certainly isn't worth what my Celtic supporting pals seem to think. He's the same sort of player Ronaldo was when he turned up at Man U a few years back - very very talented and great to watch but no end product. If Strachan can get him to focus he could end up outstanding and that, sadly, is going to be an easier trick than giving Novo, who has more of an eye for goal at the moment, the sort of ball control that McGeady has.

Anyway, returning to the point in question, McDonald's unfortunately an outstanding (re)signing for Celtic. Much more important to the team than McGeady; I would have been truly delighted at the notion of Celtic starting the new season without him.

#36 "What goals has Nohope scored which were more important?"

didn't wee nacho get the only goal of the game on helicopter sunday? plus his few against celtic this year is more than big Jan has ever scored against rangers. anyway, bit of a pointless debate this one.

i am still surprised though that some of my fellow gers fans can't admit that boruc and wee mcgeady are teriffic players, who would enhance most teams. doubt they'd be tempted to do a mo johnston and defect to the gers though unfortunately

#40 Helicopter Sunday was a case of what Celtic didn't do as opposed to what others did to us. Celtic GAVE the league away.

JVOH scored the goal deep in injury time against rearangers which completely derailed the rearangers title bid, that for me was the £10 Million goal. Scoring the winner to win the league against Dundee United ON THEIR PATCH was the lily guilded.

The team who wins the league flag earns it over 38 matches, as the tic did this season.

RFC win the league on "helicopter Sunday" but the tic gave it away?? If my memory is correct you were beaten by MacDonald and Motherwell that day. How is that giving the league away. Did the best team over 38 matches not win the league that year?

No 39 - actually, I think 8 goals from an ever-present in this "attacking" Celtic side is pretty poor, actually. This is the guy that Celtic fans were talking of in the same breath as Ronaldo when he won the SPFA - a guy who plays in the same position in a harder league and scores, ummm, 40?

He is a very good player, no doubt about it - possibly the most skilful ball-player in the league. But he doesn't deliver as often as he should and tends to disappear whenever big teams show up. For all the return he got out of Hutton, he might as well have stayed in bed, and Europe was much the same - when the guys who actually deliver the goods for Celtic did show up. Had either Robson not been bought or Hutton not been sold, McGeady's stunning skills would have seen Celtic win precisely nothing this year.

I think he'll get better, but for now if you want to keep kidding yourself please carry on. Even Nacho did more.

#49 I don't know any Celtic supporter who sees McGeady as anything other than a 'work in progress', the player is of the same opinion.

Last season he returned from pre-season having found an extra yard in pace and some upper body bulk, he added the 'end product' as his 19 assists and 8 goals attest.

With a bit of luck (hard work and dedication) some more improvement will be seen this season and we will have a diamond in the process of being polished on our hands.

It appears the lad has a good family and is well grounded, it also helps greatly that he has a manager who knows exactly the application needed when playing midfield.
He could not have a better mentor and coach at this early stage in his career.

No doubt he'll be tempted by the bigger leagues but the memory of the fate of his mates Sean Malloney and particularly Liam Miller will be fresh. Another couple of seasons in Paradise would be good for club/man and paying punter.

Back to the topic.

It would appear that McDonald has picked up on the Ausie work ethic, he'll need it.

I would prefer my 31 goal a season centre forward NOT to smoke but Henrik Larrson and Johan Croyff seemed to manage.
Johan Croyff DID however need a ranger (quadruple byepass) later than in life though.

#54 Hugh, the only memorable thing I remember Hutton doing on Aiden was the scandalous two footed tackle on the wee man when he came on as a sub in the McCurry debacle.
Result, rearangers got a THROW - IN and Aiden was booked for his next innocuous challenge.

McCurry and Dougal 'retiring' this year will be the equivilent of rearangers losing 12 points.

#58 I sit beside a Burnley season book holder here at work Hugh and he is over the moon with the transfer business.

His words: "Burnley, in the recent seasons, have played 4-5-1. Lafferty (under different management teams) has failed to displace, Andy Gray, Aidy Akinbayi (sp?), Andrew Cole, Nathan Blake or Steve Jones from the main strikers position and has been played wide left.

I can understand Strachan being tempted to have a dabble here but I trust his valuation was correct and reckon Rangers paid over the odds for a prospect rather than be seen as being outbid AGAIN for a player.

Personally, I am delighted this fell through as I'm very much more interested in seeing if Hutchinson, Sheridan and even Killen (top scorer in the 7 in a row reserves side) can step up to the plate. I'm particularly excited about Cillian Sheridan's prospects over the next few season, he looks to have the lot, height, pace, good on the deck and in the air and an eye for goal, both poaching and the spectaculat.

It's great to see these lads come through the ranks, shame about the injuries to young Ferry and Grant. The Scotland U19 team really missed this pair and I hope to see them fight for a seat on the 1st team bench this season.

Loan moves ARE good for development and it's great to see that our reserve side is packed with U19 players and still winning the league, that is great news.

Come on WGS lets get some of the dead wood out and some new blood in so we can win four in a row.

Personally that would be out Bobo, Riordon, Grav, Donatti, and maybe Naylor

Also if Boruc, Naka, VOH and McGeady go we should have £25m+ to spend, we need to do this very wisely. Don't get me wrong i don't want any of them to leave!

Thank Christ we didn't sign Lafferty....

Caddis....on the few occasions he played last season has shown he is a superb prospect....

Mizuno....again looks good....needs more 1st team exposure...

Hutchinson....again needs more 1st team chances....

Sheridan.....looks to be as good as Caddis....

Cuthbert.....another who might be a surprise step up...

In terms of ship outs....

It would be helpful if we could ship on Graveson and Donatti....

Some seem to forget....we got these players from Real Madrid and AC Milan....not Burnley?

If it's true.....then we should see Naylor have a good season.....

All in all......we don't need to bring much in....a centre half....possibly a left back!
