Chelsea 3-2 Liverpool: Drogba doubles up to drive Chelsea into Moscow final

Chelsea 3 Drogba (33, 105) Lampard pen (98)
Liverpool 2 Torres (64) Babbel (117)
EXTRA-TIME goals from Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba sent Chelsea into a Champions League final showdown against Manchester United in Moscow next month.

Lampard, playing for the first time since the death of his mother last week, coolly slotted
home a 98th-minute penalty and Drogba, who had opened the scoring in the first half, sent Chelsea to the final with a timely second.

Fernando Torres had given Liverpool hope with a second-half equaliser, but they failed to finish the job and Chelsea made them pay in a pulsating extra period which also saw Ryan Babel grab a late consolation goal for the Reds.

Drogba, a man whose penchant for spending more time horizontally on the pitch had incurred the wrath of Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez prior to kick-off, was clearly a man on a mission as he forced Jose Reina to turn his 18-yard effort around the post in the fifth minute.

Four minutes later, Liverpool put together their only meaningful move of the opening half when a quick Steven Gerrard pass allowed Torres in behind the Chelsea defence.

Unfortunately, the Spaniard's first touch was not deft enough and, although he bore down on Petr Cech, the Chelsea goalkeeper had done enough to close down his space and options.

The slippery conditions hampered both sides, but it was Chelsea who mastered them quicker. In the 18th minute, Lampard despatched a delightful pass into the path of Drogba but the Ivorian striker shot wide.

But Chelsea were in the ascendancy and their supremacy was underlined by Michael Essien's 25-yard effort, which had to be collected by Reina at the foot of his right-hand post.

Liverpool were struggling to keep pace with the home side and their worries increased when Martin Skrtel was forced off with a knee injury in the 21st minute and was replaced by Sami Hyypia.

Reina was then forced to punch clear a long-range effort from Ballack, but the goal Chelsea had threatened arrived in style in the 33rd minute.

The architect, as so often this season, was England midfielder Lampard. He cleverly split the Liverpool defence to give Salomon Kalou the chance to run on and fire a shot that Reina could only palm into the path of the onrushing Drogba. The Ivorian does not miss such gifts and sent a low drive fizzing into the net at the near post to give Chelsea a 2-1 aggregate lead.

The Chelsea striker, clearly hurt by Benitez's 'diving' accusation, then ran the length of the half to celebrate his goal in front of the Liverpool manager.

Chelsea's domination almost brought them a second four minutes before the interval, but Ballack's measured free-kick veered just the wrong side of an upright.

Dirk Kuyt almost hauled Liverpool back into the tie three minutes after the restart, but his shot met the outstretched leg of Cech before defender Ashley Cole cleared.

After Lampard's 53rd-minute volley was well held by Reina, Liverpool finally broke their goalscoring hoodoo at Stamford Bridge when Yossi Benayoun carved out a chance for Torres.

The Spaniard collected the ball in his stride just inside the penalty area before sliding it beyond the exposed Cech to make it 2-2 on aggregate – the 64th-minute effort was Liverpool's first at the west London ground in nine games under Benitez. Liverpool were now unrecognisable from the insipid team of the first half. They were pulling Chelsea apart in midfield and the home side were looking decidedly nervy. But Chelsea rallied and a fine run by Essien ended when he found the side-netting.

Both sides sought a winner – but the 90 minutes ended all-square and the contest went into extra-time.

Liverpool almost snatched the lead within minutes of the restart but Hyypia's header fell wide of the post.

Chelsea then thought they had done enough when Essien sent a 20-yard effort into the net – but it was rightly disallowed for offside. However, in the 98th minute, Ballack was brought down by Hyypia inside the box and referee Roberto Rosetti pointed to the spot. Lampard kept his composure to send Reina the wrong way and was in tears as he celebrated with his team-mates. Worse was to come for Liverpool when substitute Nicolas Anelka got free on the right and pulled the ball back for Drogba to fire under Reina.

Babel scored a late long-range strike, which Cech should have dealt with, but Chelsea held on to reach their first Champions League final.

Chelsea: Cech, Essien, Carvalho, Terry, A Cole, J Cole (Anelka 91), Ballack, Makelele, Lampard (Shevchenko 119), Kalou (Malouda 70), Drogba. Subs not used: Cudicini, Obi, Alex, Belletti.

Liverpool: Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Skrtel (Hyypia 22), Riise, Kuyt, Alonso, Mascherano, Benayoun (Pennant 78), Gerrard, Torres (Babel 99). Subs not used: Itandje, Finnan, Crouch, Lucas. Booked: Alonso, Arbeloa.

Great to see a Northern club and Southern English club in the final, I would love to see Chelsea win, but Utd are going to be hard to beat and at the end of the day whoever wins it will be a English club. Let's hope Rangers do well tonight, it will be good for British Football.

#9 I think most of our players will not be playing for the shirt but playing elsewhere for the money. Gillingam football club has excellent facilities, Night Club, amazing banquet rooms, most of the premier league have there meetings at Priestfield, but that is the trouble the Chairman Paul Scally seems more into making money out of them then the football side of things, the club has an amazing history, did you know that Gillingham were the first team to win the FA Cup, they were represented by the Royal Engineers where the Headquarters are in Gillingham, mind you it was in the late 1800's, but that is the closest we are ever going to get.

#13 Sad really is'nt it, I have to admit that when I look at the lower Scottish league clubs and how low there gates are I do wonder how do they manage, the Gills only get around 6,000 a gate and they are constantly scraping the barrel. They could not even train on there field recentley as some travellers managed to set camp up on it, you could'nt make it up if you wanted to, they were resorted to asking someone if they had a bit of land to spare until they could get them off.

Wouldnt it be great if rangers win the UEFA cup and Manu win the Champions League. If Ferguson is still at Manu for next season, do you think he will get a shiver down the back of his spine, playing against a club that he use to love, support and play for back in the days.

That would be a, all but a true Battle Of Britain match, or as close as you can get to a Scotland vs England game but not it being a international match. As i reckon ManUtd is the most English Club between them and Chealsea, and Rangers is i think the most Scottish in scotland that plays in UEFA. You got more chance seeing the Scottish flag at a rangers game than seeing one in a Celtic game

Only a 2v0 lead will force Smith to change tactics. At 1v0, Rangers' task remains the same : nick a goal and they are in the final. So going a goal down won't cause a great deal of alarm in the Rangers dugout.

I don't know how to call this one. I thought Fiorentina looked pretty rubbish in the first leg, indistinguishable really from how Sporting Lisbon faired. One or two half chances and that was it.

You need skillful creative players ( McGeady, Naka ) as well as brawn ( Hartley, Robson ) to really get in about Rangers. I didn't see much of either qualities in Fiorentina in the first leg, and if they are going to get goals, it's not obvious to me where they will come from.

Having said that, they are a decent serie A side and I imagine they've got more in the locker than was evidenced at Ibrox. If they manage to get 2v0 in front, Rangers could finish on an absolute tanking...records could be broken for a UEFA semi-final.

Great game last nite..................

Who am i kidding? Not interested in last nights game when Rangers are a step away form a Euro final.

Tonight will be a tough order no doubt and we are no doubt underdogs but hey, that suits us fine. We need to make sure we dont get pushed too far back the park like we did against Bremen, no doubt we will be under intense pressure for much of the game but we must retain a threat to keep them occupied at the back. I fancy a 1-1 draw to send us to Manchester.

Alexander
Broadfoot Weir/Dailly Cuellar Papac
Hemdani
Novo Thomson Barry Davis Whittaker
Cousin

If Weir plays tonight in defence PLEASE no Dailly in midfield. Hemdani is plenty of cover at the back with BArry and Thomson dropping back as needed. Novo to start as looked one of the few dangerous players against them in the first leg.

I would say the Italians are far better technically than Sporting.

It doesn't matter who you are or how good you might be...if the opposition stick 11 men inside their own penalty box...it is difficult to break down....

The problem with that defensive approach is....if you do conceed.....it is ever so difficult to change and get back in the game!

I can see this ending in a 1-0....maybe even going to extra time.

Great game last night and the blues (for me)were deserved winners. I actually think Chelsea may win the final. Oh what I'd give for it to be both teams in Blue in the two Euro finals!

Man Utd v Chelsea in the CL in Moscow....

Wonder how the Russian cops will deal with the English fans if it kicks off?

Perhaps you might want to try ohwhatacliche.com for your answer Maxie.
If you had a clue about Chelsea and their support, you'd know how far off the mark this wee Glega sellick patterette is.
Isnt it great having two British teams in the final?
Here's to Rangers making it through as well.
