GORDON Strachan's newfound reputation as Scotland's very own Tinkerman is likely to be enhanced tonight as he attempts to plot a successful course through Celtic's opening Champions League Group E match against Aalborg at Parkhead.

Despite a ruthless exhibition of attacking football that brought the 4-2 victory at Motherwell on Saturday, the Celtic manager seems certain to make changes in his team, reinstating some familiar faces to what is an unfamiliar situation.

For the first time in six attempts, the Scottish champions begin their campaign at home to the lowest seeds in the group, making them not only favourites – also a unique experience for an opening game – but as prohibitively priced as 2-5 with some bookmakers. With the Danish champions available at 8-1, the home fans will have high expectations.

It is reasonable to assume that a large proportion of the 60,000 expected at Celtic Park would be happy to see an unchanged side take the field, but Strachan revealed yesterday that he had prepared his entire squad for the prospect of regular tinkering during the coming months and that none among them should consider himself an automatic choice.

"I made it clear to the players recently," said Strachan, "that we have a big period coming up and that I would be thinking of regularly freshening things up. I mean, I couldn't expect people to be sitting on the bench for eight matches in a row and then suddenly throw them into a very big game.

"I had already been thinking about this match against Aalborg before the Motherwell match and I won't be deviating much from that. Most of our players have had at least a touch of Champions League football, so there isn't much to be anxious about in that respect."

In attempting to ascertain Strachan's intentions, it may be advisable to place some significance on his appraisal of tonight's opponents, especially where his prospective partnership in attack is concerned. "Anybody who thinks Aalborg will be like Copenhagen, whom we played a couple of seasons ago, will be wrong," he said. "They are nothing like as big and physical and they like to play the ball around when they can."

From this, it is tempting to infer that Scott McDonald, who made a scoring return to the team at Motherwell, could be back on the bench to allow Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink – suspended for last weekend's match – to join the in-form Georgios Samaras in a pairing that would surely present an aerial threat to the Danes. It is also possible that Shunsuke Nakamura and Aiden McGeady will be restored to the flanks. The Japanese midfielder's dead-ball expertise may be irresistible to Strachan on a night when a home side expected to be doing most of the attacking could be rewarded with a plethora of free kicks by a referee – Matteo Trefoloni of Italy – ready to impose the stricter disciplines of the European game.

Despite the ebullient form of Shaun Maloney at Fir Park, McGeady's selection would be based simply on the horses-for-courses principle. He has a good record against even the most formidable of opponents in the Champions League and, like Nakamura, is capable of delivering telling crosses to Samaras and Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Strachan's dilemma may be in central midfield, where he may have to decide whether to play someone in the defensive, holding role. Marc Crosas played the part in the absence of the injured Paul Hartley on Saturday, but the young Spaniard is the one man in the squad with no Champions League experience. In a match which seems almost designed for relentless aggression, Strachan may dispense with a "sitting" midfielder and play Scott Brown and Barry Robson, the latter also capable of delivering a goal with his shooting from either a moving or a dead ball.

On the eve of his fourth venture into Europe's premier competition, Strachan was clearly once again stimulated by the prospect, his anticipation of another adrenaline-charged night at Celtic Park heightened by the conviction that his squad may now be better equipped than before to improve an appalling away record. That seems likely to be necessary in a group that also includes Manchester United and Villarreal of Spain.

"As a coach, the Champions League has been invaluable to me," he said. "I've learned one or two wee things and, hopefully, as it all unfolds this season, you'll see things we've been working on in the pre-season being made to count. You ask if our squad is now the best equipped it has been, but that's hard to answer.

"I mean, would I like Neil Lennon still around at his best? Yes, I would. I'd also like Chris Sutton and others who were here when I came still to be here at their best. But we do have a squad who are not brilliant at one particular thing – I mean, they don't go long stretches without conceding, they don't score millions of goals – but they are good at lots of things.

"What I'm saying to opponents is, if you play a certain way, we can find a way of competing with you. And what I've also learned from the Champions League is that it's not as big and scary out there as you first thought. I remember being very nervous at my first group match, which was Manchester United away. I'd been to Old Trafford many times, but with the likes of Southampton and Coventry, you could sneak in and sneak back out.

"But going there with Celtic in the Champions League, the entire world is looking at you. Well, that kind of nervousness is gone. We can compete and, if we could reach the last 16 for the third year in a row, it would make people say, hey, they're pretty consistent, that team."

Few would argue with Strachan's observation that his squad is not capable of conquering the world, but it will be something of a shock if they fail to prise three points from Aalborg.

Will be fascinating to see who Strachan finally picks. Samaras is on fire at the moment, he's sure to start, but you never know with WGS. Will also be interesting to see who gets the nod between Maloney and McGeady. Personally I'd like to see both in the same team with a five in midfield. Believe Gordon hinted he might play this way in Europe.

This is quite a departure for Strachan. If you've followed Celtic since he arrived, you'd know he rarely changed his formations except for injury. During games, too, no matter how the team was struggling, he always seemed reluctant to pull players off. I wonder what caused his conversion.

Handel would have been a big 'tic fan if still around the day.

Should be an easy 3 points for the beggars tonight, but with strachan in charge you never know.
This game will be vital if celtic want to make it to the UEFA cup.
Aalborg away won't be so easy.
Mind you, now that starchan has decided to drop his "stars" for the away games, maybe celtic can muster their second away point in 18 attempts!
Does this mean strachan has finally heard of tactics?
Loved his quote yesterday that celtic can play all styles of football, but none of them very well.
Spot on there wee Gordon.

Before all the mud slinging starts as a Rangers fan I would like to say I hope Celtic and Motherwell do well (its all about the co-efficient).

The mindless comments from some quarters does make it hard to wish them success but I just keep reminding myself that Scotland comes first before petty rivalry when it comes to Europe.

Both teams are Scottish (though one seems to have a yearning to be something else) so we should support them, anything else is small minded IMO.

Obviously my big heart only goes so far so would still like Celtic to get hammered at some stage but as I said at the moment the co-efficient comes first so good luck!

An OF thread open ? It would be nice to keep it that way. Unreasonable football abuse only.

Celtic aren't a great side, I think the fact that they overhauled a huge points difference with 10 games to go last season to win the league, which should go down in the annals of football history as one of the greatest comebacks ever, papered over a lot of cracks.

The Danes are clearly a decent, solid side. If we beat them, we'll have to earn it ourselves, same as we did over the closing games last season, if you remember.

I'm not greatly confident because of our shaky start to the season. Making all those mistakes and letting the dirty mob beat us was unforgivable, even though I forgive them. However, Celtic have proved me wrong time and time again in Europe and I hope they do it again- like they did and last season when, if you remember, we came back from the dead to win the league in the last game of the season at Tannadice while Rangers were getting caned at Pittodrie. Do you remember ?

I can understand your thoughts and I would have said the same a few years back (even though lots of my friends are Celtic fans).

Now I try to rise above the rivalry when I can for the good of Scotland, however even that has it's limits so when it comes to the business end of the CL the rivalry returns 100%. The more games they play in the meantime the more injuries they will get, the tiredness as the season progresses will come quicker; so 6 tough games then either finish 4th or get through to the knockout stages and get hammered then.

Whilst most of Europe was in a knot over ReaRangers Kaunas Krash, one man who failed to laugh was Uefa President, Michel Platini.

Platini and his Uefa Organisation were demonstrated as a gutless, powerless talking shop when supporters of one of their member countries club sacked a major European City in one of their "showpiece" finals.

Normal Uefa process is to hand autonomy in these matters to the member organisation and keep their own hands clean. Unfortunatley, the member organisation in this instance has been complicit in incubating the hatred, violence and bile demonstrated.

Zut Alors, Monsuir Platini - when all eyes where on you and your organisation....you fought like a true Frenchman!

So....when Kaunas hit their winner in the closing stages in Lithuania, in amidst the giggling and laughing, there was one major sigh to be heard.

Expect Kaunas to get some kind of "unseen" reward from Uefa.

We certainly don't have anything to worry about domestically. Barring the odd freak result, Celtic are streets ahead of the competion (if you could call it that).

Swordie - you could be right.

You're our man in Dublin, any truth in the rumour that the Irish covernment's complaint about the Famine Song was an attempt to lever a couple more tickets for the Man U game out of Celtic?

I love these conspiracy theories.

I also find some the narrow-mindedness coming from some Rangers' fans amazing.

Modern European football, with co-efficients and so on means we all have to get behind every Scottish team in Europe, since the longer our teams are in there, the better our co-efficient becomes.

If people cannot see this, they must be really thick.

I thought the passing and movement leading up to Sami's second goal was par excellence...Naylor to Sami...one touch back to Naylor...one touch forward to McDonald...one touch back heel inside to Sami...two touches from Sami and the ball's in the net.

The technical brilliance of that goal was as good as anything you'll see in the premiership.

Aalborg will be better than Motherwell, but that kind of fast, accurate one touch movement in the final third is going to cause problems for even the best defences on the planet....noone gets time to anticipate the final ball and that's what makes it so deadly.
And Sami's stats - 5 goals in 3 starts - are beginning to suggest that at £1.2m, he's been a snip.

I'll be disappointed if Hinkel gets the nod ahead of Wilson...I read yesterday that he should be fit.
I thought Wilson looked great against Motherwell whereas none of Hinkel's performances this season have greatly impressed...mind you, they were good enough to get him back into the international set-up after a long absence so who am I to judge?

And no McDonald ? I thought he did well against Motherwell, particularly as he's just back from injury....and a great finish for his goal.
After his contribution last season and the effort he put into the motherwell game, I think he deserves a start tonight.

ReaRangers pumped 4-0 at home to Liverpool
ReaRangers pumped out of Europe by Kaunus
ReaRangers struggle to beat Falkirk
ReaRangers need penalties to secure points against Hearts and Killie
ReaRangers held to draw by Aberdeen.

Statistically, the game a Parkhead was a blip as Celtic sold some horrendous goals on the day.

It should be the rally call to wake up from the complacency shown in the early games of the season.

Its a real pity that you posted 162 as some of your earlier views were quite sensible.

However!-to suggest that if Celtic dont win tonight their season is over is just plain daft.

Their are six games in the CL group stages and as you bears know early results are sometimes no indication as to how the group might pan out.

And even if the CL goes pear shape for us what does that really do for our SPL aspirations? -well most would accept less European games usually helps a team challenging for the domestic title.

Try harder next time with the wind ups!

As one of only three Scottish teams to have made it to the UEFA cup final, I feel no shame in replying that it was in 1987.
I know that United are a wee team in a wee league, but I love them all the same.
We have to sign players that are too good for us and flog them to bigger teams. That is how we survive. I accept this as our fate: no sense in pretending otherwise.
If the OF could accept the same fate (of course, both sides operate on a larger scale, but nonetheless are small potatoes in the football field of dreams) then Scottish football may eventually start to move forward in a healthy and sustainable fashion.

After the Parkhead Blip against ReaRangers, its time for Mighty Celtic to lift their heads up again and refocus.

This team will be better than ReaRangers.

They are the Champions of their country...something whihc ReaRangers have only been able to claim twice in the last 8 years.

They also have a manager who proved himself in the upper echelons of the English Game.

Everton only really started to re-establish themselves as a mid table (MID TABLE) EPL team after "Walter" was punted. (see its OK to say that "Walter" has been sacked)

I expect them to be technically an tactically stronger than ReaRangers. But with the right focus, Mighty Celtic should be too strong.

Fair doos: if this law ever comes to pass then we shall see a different playing field.
RE: David Murray's Mint, not sure what you mean by this. Man U received £80 million from their Euro-campaign. Without this investment they would not be able to maintain status quo (I understand that it just about covers interest on loans and other financial services). Similarly without a decent Euro-run RFC will struggle. I understood (from DM's statement) that the investment in Mendes and Davies is to ensure that the same situ does not arise next year, because (as is the case in all European domestic leagues) no team can expect to top their respective leagues without this extra cash.
It would be fantastic if the OF could find a way out of the SPL, allowing other teams to dip their paws into the Euro-honey-pot and the associated long-term financial benefits.
The OF could not survive without qualifying for Europe YOY.

The format has changed, but the title remains the same : Champions of Europe.

If changing the format renders the title 'defunct', then you cannot claim to have won the league 51 times...yes, each year, the winners can claim to be Champions of Scotland, but if you are saying that the competition which Celtic won in 1967 is now defunct, you cannot sustain the claim to 51 titles.

Incidentally, on UEFA's champions league website, Celtic are listed as previous winners, so your theory that the competition which Celtic won is now defunct is at odds with the view of UEFA...but then they only award the trophy, so how would they know ?

218, bring them on
On and off the field we are looking good. We paid off part of our overdraft (not just the interest) this year.
If we had the opportunity to perform in Europe every year then we would have a slice of the pie that has helped RFC to "record" profits.
And whilst we wouldn't make it the UEFA final, we would beat Kaunas.
185

Helter Skelter,

Tonight is pay back for screwing up against minnows Kaunas.
It was disappointing at the time, and rearrangerz have clocked up some decent results in the league....but all the talk that they had put the humiliation of Kaunas behind them starts to look distinctly bogus today.

The Champions League is in town, with all the attendant pomp and circumstance, whilst over at ibrox, they'll be having a sausage roll buffet and watching the bill....the sight of Celtic getting all the attention really sticks in the craw for Minty...mabey he thought that spending all that money wxould have a therapeutic effect, but it's not going to work.

Tonight, rearrangerz are gutted, pig-sick and deeply, deeply envious. It is double edged sword : a wounding reminder of their mortification in Kaunas AND the sight of Celtic , for the third season in a row, taking their place at world club football's top table.

There has been talk of Celtic being invited to join the English Championship on condition that Celtic agree to remain in the league for 5 years.

Rearrangerz were not invited to partake in these discussions, and the last time etims covered the story (July), Celtic were said to be prepared to agree if they would reduce the period to 3 years.

The discussions have apparently been deep frozen for the time being, but the Championship are said to be keen on bringing Celtic in.

What exactly is the Rangers 'brand and who exactly outside of parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland does it appeal to?

Is your head buried so deep in the sand that you cannot see how badly the name of Rangers as an organisation has been damaged by riots, attacking police and now bigoted songs wishing for the cleansing of Scotland of an ethnic minority?

How often do we have to repeat this?
And that's why the OF generally have no respect for the diddy teams or their sad fans.
You hate us but you need us.
How sad does that make you?
Think how cr'p your wee diddy clubs would be with NO OF??
Actually, how many wee diddy teams would survive?
Not many.
In fact clubs like East Stirling would have more chance of survival than the big leeches like spineless FC or the scum at fester road.

I beleive that this will be scrapped before to long. They way Aberdeen worked it, effectively Rangers fans paid for the admin charge and I reckon most clubs will work this counter attack on Celtic & Rangers. MagnumPI = totally gutted and now resorting to telling us that he hopes Celtic get stuffed but that he also hopes Celtic win so that they will.....er..keep their successful manager so that they end up ...er less successful....but fools no one into thinking that he isnt totally gutted.

Dark Horse = Gutted, so gutted in fact that he's got on a Ryanair flight to somewhere he thinks he can escape the CL.

All this in the week that David 'Muzz' Murray announces record profits for Rangers yet at the same time tells the fans - we need to concentrate on youth because we are...ski...eh, we jist dinnae want to spend oor money coz we are being fly, by the way.... this translates from BS into english as "we're skint".

I'm looking forward to watching the champions in action tonight.
On Saturday we saw both the best and the worst of what this Celtic side are capable of and I believe that Strachan has the ability to marginalise the carelessness whilst emphasising the slick forward play.

We played the best football during the first 55 minutes at fir park as we've played in the last 10 years, and the task for Strachan is to identify how we lost our way and learn from it.

We go into this game in good order with just about the whole squad fully fit or close to full fitness. We just need to tighten things up at the back, keep the concentration for the full 90 minutes.

We are capable of getting both a clean sheet and a few goals, but I'll allow for one 'freak' :

Celtic 3 Aalborg 1

"Zulu"...A Quintessentially British (well,Welsh) movie where we are surrounded by foreigners who hate us for trying to instil our "Britishness" on the local populace by waving Union Jacks and pashing in the streets...

"Beau Geste" A terrific movie where, once again we are surrounded by the local populace who hate us for bringing our own "Culture" with us,upsetting the peaceful folk by rammying with the sand dancers and trying to put white gloves and crepe sashes on their women folk...Guest appearances by Hemdani and Bougherra.

"Assault on precinct 13" A terrific movie where, once again we are surrounded by a hate filled local populace who take extreme prejudice to our insistence that we can do as we please "Coz we are the peepil"....

Thought Crosas looked excellent in the first half on Saturday, my worry was that he only disappeared after taking a hefty challenge, hopefully he'll learn to take the hits. Onto the important bits now though, finished work and off for a bevvy!

'mon the Hoops!

Pundit. What's the story there? If he appeals, is the red card automatically cancelled out? Same kind of scenario as the old parking ticket with the wrong time on it? (Got away with that one myself once- the 24-hour / 12-hour clock mistake from the dizzy traffic warden. Schoolboy error, really.

Dear, oh dear.

Lots of attacking options for Celtic, but someone forgot to tell them before the game that the ball must go IN the net...especially Samaras.

I think Robson's been getting too cocky lately. Maybe that penalty miss will bring him back down to earth.

A 10 man Danish team, especially one having such a dreadful domestic season so far, should have been a couple of goals down at the half.

Celtic are now in desperate shape and have piled incredible pressure on themselves for making the last 16.

Strachan needs to do some major work. I hope he can manage it. I don't think Celtic will make it out of their group this season. Maybe they can match Rangers run last year?

Helter Skelter,

Not a good result for Celtic, but the fact that there was a 0v0 at Old Trafford levels everything out.

We didn't play well but nevertheless, we had enough chances to win...if you don't take your chances you don't deserve to win.

We can , as a result of Man U's result, recover from this.. but our performance has to improve or we might as well no' bother.

Helter Skelter,

I have a feeling that home advantage will be of little effect in Celtic's group.
I believe that levels of dominance will be close whether home or away between all of the teams...possibly man u at home to aalborg will be the only possible exception to that...but they showed tonight that they can face of 60,000 so I don't imagine that Old Trafford can do much more.

Well what can you say?--on the night not quite good enough to get over the finish line.

Semed to lack that bit of creativity and guile that was needed in the last third but hey look at Man Utd dropping points at home so no great disgrace for the Celts.

What our result and a few others over the last 2 nights have shown that their are very few mugs in the CL proper and when we let our local media tell us that the 3 points are their for the taking we should always bear in mind the true quality of the SPL.
If we or RFC for that matter can get to the group stages and manage to work ourself into the last 16 then we really have done well.

Anyway not the end of the world.

Yeah i did forget to compliment the Danes on a solid performance and most likely deserved their point over the 90 minutes.

What strikes me is that often their players can look so much more technically gifted and capable than what we get to observe in the SPL, i mean its fecking Aalborg with a wage bill of £300,000.

Looks like a straight fight for third place now between Celtic and Aalborg with Aalborg edging it as they got the vital away point. I reckon Celtic at best will take 1 point from the two Villareal games, 3 points from the two Man U games as Man U have not clicked into gear yet and finally another point away to Aalborg.....unfortunately the away win famine will continue. Oops where's my local Irish Consul??

Its not out fault your club Chairman deemed the song inappropriate and asked the fans of RFC to stop singing it.

If footie fans of a club feel its relevant to make humour out of that type of event from history were millions starved to death then i can only worry for the kids who are surrounded by the same adults.

So Celtcs Champions League campaign is over already.

If you cant beat the "worst" team in the group who incidentally only had 10 men then what chance do you have?

Borat and McDonald better lose some weight or the plane wont be able to take off for the Villarreal game.

Which one of the following teams apart from the MIGHTY AALBORG have Celtic also drawn with at home in the Champions League Group stages?

Disappointing result for Scotland's CL representatives tonight, although not one that hugely surprises me.

Celtic were overdue a draw in the Group stage. If it had been achieved away from home it would have been cause for celebration, but unfortunately it happened at CP.

Realistically, Aalborg are undoubtedly Celtic's weakest opponents in this group, so this home match surely represented their best opportunity for a victory. I would actually go out on a limb now and predict that Celtic won't manage a single win in the Group stage, and that inevitably means elimination, but who knows, maybe they can prove me wrong.

From an RFC viewpoint, I seen enough tonight to suggest that, if we had held out for that last five minutes away to Kaunas, we would have struggled so early in the season to get past Aalborg, although we would then have had the consolation of a UEFA Cup slot.

Whether Celtic will enjoy such consolation after another five matches is open to question, but with all four teams on one point and no goals scored, the group is there to be won and lost.

Bit of a goal famine at Porkheid tonight against the alleged weakest team in the group. What a bunch of numpties. Even getting their traditional penalty didn't work.
Villareal will easily come first or second. Aalborg will win at home. Celtc straight out.

I see that once again a section of our correspondents have been offended by a slight (perceived or real) from one of our stringers.
The use of a currently emotive word to describe the dearth of attacking options and scarcity of tactical nous displayed by Celtic on Wednesday nightseems to have highlighted a deficiency in a sense of humour on the one side; and a want of sensitivity on the other.
The absence of objective opinion throughout this and many other threads leads me to believe that in Scotland, people are content to excuse a deficit in themselves so long as it can be argued that there exists a greater lack in others.
To argue that one kind of bigotry is acceptable because another kind is perceived to be worse, to me, indicates a paucity in logic.
To close, a particular sense of humour can often be offensive to those who do not share it. I am certain the likes of Billy Connely would have bee starved of the success he enjoys had he not been offensive to large elements of society. This does not mean we should deprive others of this kind of outlet.
