WAITING to meet Prince Charles to receive the MBE for an outstanding career in nursing, all Carol Hoy could think about was nipping through to another room.
Her dearest wish was to watch her son – Scotland's Olympic gold medal hero, Chris Hoy – being knighted.

The Hoys are the first mother and son to be honoured at a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony on the same day.

And yesterday, royal officials ushered the retired nurse to a backstage vantage point where she could witness yet another of her son's amazing achievements first-hand, and snatch a few private words with him.

Mrs Hoy, 61, of Roseburn, Edinburgh, who early in her career became the youngest sister at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, went on to play an important role in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary's sleep research department. She was a ward manager running a national referral service for about 6,000 patients. Before retiring, she was recognised as one of the world's most experienced sleep nurses.

Speaking after receiving the MBE for services to healthcare, Mrs Hoy said: "To be together at the Palace, for a mum that means everything to me. I was really keen that I would able to see, and the staff were fantastic – they took me down and I had a really close view of him."

Sir Chris, 33, collected his knighthood after winning gold in the team sprint, men's sprint and the Keirin in Beijing, making him the first Briton to win three golds at one Olympics in 100 years. He already had won an Olympic gold, in the 1km time trial in Athens 2004.

Yesterday, Sir Chris said: "Because Mum was receiving the MBE and was actually outside the room at the time they allowed her to come down into the wings and watch the ceremony. That was pretty special – I could see her out of the corner of my eye. It is a great day for the whole family."

The Edinburgh-born cyclist said: "I heard about Mum's MBE before I heard about my knighthood, and I was so delighted. It's just such an amazing thing to happen to her, because she's worked so hard all her life.

"There are so many people like my mum who normally don't get recognised," he added. "It's people like her who dedicate their lives to their work."

Of his knighthood, he added: "I am still getting used to it. It is an amazing honour. Prince Charles mentioned my mum and said what a fantastic day it must be for the family and congratulations to us both."

Mrs Hoy said the prince wanted to know where her son got his sporting prowess from.

"I was able to assure him that it was not me," she said. "He just gets stuck in and gets on with it. I did buy him his first bike at a church hall, so it's all my fault."

She added: "It's a huge honour (to get the MBE]. So many nurses do fantastic things, so to get picked out was very, very special. And then when we heard Chris was going to be knighted, that really blew our socks off."

Yesterday completed a hat-trick of honours for the Hoy family. Sir Chris's grandmother, Isa Reid, led the way with an MBE in 1989 for service chairing the Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland. Mrs Reid – who used to call Sir Chris her "little golden boy" – died in 1998, too soon to watch her grandson conquer the sporting world.

The knighthood caps a remarkable year for the cyclist, who has received a number of accolades for his achievements on the track, including BBC Sports Personality of the Year. In April, he got engaged to girlfriend Sarra Kemp.

Sir Chris said: "Being knighted is the furthest thing on your mind when you compete at something like the Olympics. You train for your whole life and all of your sporting career to try and win gold medals"

David Brailsford, the man who led Britain's cyclists to eight golds at Beijing, also collected a CBE from the Prince of Wales during the ceremony.

Double gold medallist Bradley Wiggins picked up his CBE, while team-mates Victoria Pendleton and Jason Kenny collect their MBEs. Ellen Hunter, who won two golds at the Paralympics as a tandem cyclist, also collected her OBE.

Well done to Chris Hoy. Although to be honest I preferred our Knights of Old. Conquering New Worlds in rickety old galleons. Or charging machine gun posts and breaches in castle walls with no regard to their own safety.
Not going like the clappers in a circle on a bike while not having to worry about going out and working for a living like normal folk. Then appearing on telly in cereal ads and quiz shows.
But I'm old fashioned.

I sort of agree with you Fred. I think his mum did more for the world than her son, so far. Good luck to Chris though, a great son of Scotland. Let's hope that his homeland is soon independent and can bestow its own honours on him and his ilk.

Understand what you're are saying and I agree in part, although living in the new world now I hear the stories of the damage done by those conquering heros which nowadays would be considered by some as verging on genocide.
History is written by the victor.
The bravery displayed by those in battles that you refer to is on a different scale and these individuals must be held in great regard.
Many of our Knights of Old got there by exploitation of others.

How very Scottish to be consumed with envy and jealousy because someone else was successful. There is much that I find pathetic about Scotland's stay-at-home bedwetters, but rarely does one have the chance to see such emotions so shamelessly and publically displayed.

Honours are a civic reward for bringing recognition to one's country by whatever life endeavours those so honoured have engaged in.

It is signally pathetic to read the continuing battle across Hadrian's Wall by small-minded snarks on both sides of the border.

The gaels at (5) have no dog in this fight, so can we assume that they suffer from scotophobia and cannot help themselves?

Keep it nice.

#5 Mìcheal a Eilean Rùim,
I am certainly not consumed by jealousy or envy of this fine man. I'm very proud of what he has achieved. However, does it warrant a knighthood? An OBE certainly. In any case I look forward to the day when Scotland will hand out its own awards to encourage its sons and daughters to excel in the world and we stop kow-towing to that Saxe-Coburg wummin.

I can't understand some of the Snotty remarks made by some of you Scots, they have both represented their Nation well with their achievements and both appear to be thoroughly nice people so why not swallow your bile and wish them the congratulations they deserve, I certainly do.

Geoff,

8 Joe Plaice-Joe, there is as much Scots as Saxe Coburg in that wummin inasfar as the blood thing has any meaning at all. Sean Connery(begorah) is a Proud Scot who you would not deny as one of your true Sons of Alba. His name and ancestry though, like Elizabeth Windsor, is not typically Scots!!

Well done to Chris Hoy and his mum. The honours may be a little archaic but its the thought that counts.
12

Joe Plaice,

the Nutmeg of Consolation 12/06/2009 07:03:53
#10, Geoff, I'm not sure that Sean Connery is atypical of Scots. My great grandmother was Irish and there are many, many Scots with similar ancestry. I take your point but I reckon that the royal family have kept their bloodline as pure as possible, you only have to look at the quear's deformed offspring to see that. Every so often a bit of outside blood is brought in to prevent the worst types of deformities, (Diana for example).

Congratulations again to the Hoy's.

#5 richmond, I agree with all the comments in the first set, which you so roundly rubbished! Chris Hoy and his mother both fully deserve their awards, but do 3 gold medals really warrant a knighthood? I think an OBE or MBE would have been more appropriate, whereas Mrs Hoy's contribution deserves higher recognition. That's not jealousy talking, that's reality.

good luck to the guy and admire his stamina and sporting prowess, but is there not something apparently out of sync with these award systems ? ...in that A guy rides a bike around all day and gets a knighthood ...while "strangely" his Mum is suddenly appreciated at this moment for all her past work which is off benefit to the nations population ...and gets only an MBE ?

Coming top think about it Gordon? ...I used to ride a bike delivering papers in the mornnig and evening ..so in balance I actually covered both above criteria,,, Can i get an honour mate !!!!

When I lived in the UK, it was my understanding this was based on what your perceived place was in society, - a sort of rank. Surely, this seems very unfair as applied to those cyclists.

Congratulations to Chris Hoy on his Olympic successes.

However, in my opinion there should be no honour which changes someone's name and sets them apart from other people. I have no problem with MBE, OBE or CBE (although it's a bit laughable that they still refer to a British Empire which consists of The Isle of Man, Gibraltar, and the Falklands), but to make someone Sir or Lord or Lady in the 21st century seems, to me, wrong.

Particular congratulations to Mrs Hoy though, for all her dedicated years of nursing. It's a pity all nurses who work so hard couldn't get an honour.
44

Tris,

12/06/2009 13:04:37
#30. Very good point. I remember Brown telling the Olympic Gold winners that the honours committee should and would recognise them (kind of blowing a big hole in the idea that they were in any way independent).

He compared them at that point to troops in Iraq.

I remember thinking, without trying to diminish the athletes' achievements, that this was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard Brown say (and I HEARD him say it).

Fighting insurgents, daily putting your life on the line, is in no way comparable to running, swimming or cycling a race. If mr Brown thinks it is then perhaps he should no longer be in charge of the armed forces, for he will never treat them with the respect they deserve.

I'm pretty sure Chris Hoy would agree with that sentiment.

56 Tris-you would be more than welcome on the BVI -Scots,English,Irish and Welsh virgins all warmly received! As to the Isle of Man-yes thats a strange one-not part of the UK but not a colony and not independent!! I would love to join you on your tour if u win the lotto-some exotic destinations!

#78, Sorry Fowler, while I agree that we Scots have contributed disproportionately to the society in which we now live, I think you will find that Mr. Bell actually invented the telephone in Canada. Golf was first invented in Holland I think but fine tuned in Scotland and the first course was created at Musselburgh I believe. St. Andrews was second.

We are f@rking great though, aren't we, unlike kimba who is a raving, frothing-at-the-mouth troll. "your beloved Andy Murray to name but a few", Bwahahahahahahaha! Since when did Andy Murray become a few people? Is he suffering from multiple personality disorder? I think kimba is, too many moniker changes have cracked what little sanity he had left.

Chris Hoy an MBE? That will absolutely infuriate the SNP mob. How dare he take part in a British team? How dare he accept an MBE from the royal family? Those are the sort of questions the SNP mob will ask.
Poor Chris Hoy, a man who dedicated his life to his sport but who will be in the bad books of his nations leaders and their blinkered followers.

My sole interest in this group is to find our what exactly is going to help Scotland become a sovereign nation once again. The bad tempers, the sniping at each other, the childish scoring of points leaves me unmoved. All I want is a clear statement on what Scots plan to do in order to achieve independence. Millions of overseas Scots no doubt are waiting to find out too, because what we can do in terms of money, advice and expertise are what is going to be required.

Mother and son ? If it were not for the obvious difference in age they could have been twins !
I actually know two twins who look less like each other than the two Hoys do!

Well done both of you.
I was never a fan of the honours system.but mostly because some of the awards are ridiculous.
These two however ,no complaints .

95 No one disputes that England has had many fine inventors and innovators. On the contrary, credit given where it is due.
We similarly have pride in the knowledge that we have a record of our own also.
We produce more scientists per head of population than anyone I read recently.

Of course our population is much smaller and there are at least 32 cities in the world whose population is at least 5 million and bigger than that of Scotland .

Shanghai (metropolitan area)on its own accounts for around 20 million .
Nevertheless I agree that England has made a significant contribution to mankind.
