Cowdenbeath 2 - Hibernian 0: Paatelainen sent off as Hibs crash

Published Date: 29 July 2008
HIBS manager Mixu Paatelainen has had to endure wild rumours of his supposed resignation and the 6-0 thrashing from Barcelona in recent days, but this display against Third Division Cowdenbeath will not have cheered him less than a fortnight before the new Premier League season begins.
The Easter Road outfit at least have the prospect of two new signings – rumoured to be trialist pair Steven Thicot and Joe Keenan – to be unveiled at a press conference today as well as the fallback of having fielded a mixture of youngsters and fring
e players against the Blue Brazil.

Paatelainen will also be heartened by his first competitive sighting of Uruguayan trialist Fabian Yantorno, the former Gretna striker, who was given the last half-hour of this friendly as he battles back after nearly seven months out with a knee injury. A second trialist, understood to be former Millwall and Leeds United midfielder Curtis Weston, also had 90 minutes to earn a deal but had little chance to impress.

However, a miserable evening against the club which gave him his managerial break was capped when Paatelainen was sent to the stand by referee Brian Colvin. Pressure appears to be already mounting on the Easter Road manager before the campaign begins. The full-time whistle was met with a chorus of boos from the travelling fans, who are growing uneasy at a lack of new recruits and victories during an unhappy pre-season.

Paatelainen conceded his own frustration had played its part in his dismissal. He said: "Tonight it looked like every decision the referee and the linesman made went against us. I was disappointed. Quite clearly it was a penalty in the second half when the boy handled in the box.

"On the other hand, the linesman put his flag up for a foul when we had a player in the box to knock it into the empty net and he didn't play advantage. It is disappointing, games and matches are won and lost because of these decisions. The first goal wasn't a penalty at all, it was outside the box and it wasn't a foul at all.

"I was ordered to the stand because I was very unhappy we didn't get a penalty and I was very unhappy the referee didn't allow us to play advantage, and for me these are very easy decisions for the referee and linesman to make."

Hibs did their best to ensure their hosts threatened in the early stages, with midfielder Ross Chisholm crashing a header off his own bar in the 10th minute in trying to deal with a Kenny Adamson cross.

With the Easter Road side toiling, they went behind in controversial fashion. Paul McQuade and Hibs skipper Rob Jones tussled as they chased a ball at the edge of the box but, on the advice of his assistant, Colvin pointed to the spot, and Fairbairn despatched the penalty high into David Grof's net.

Hibs enjoyed a brief flurry of meaningful activity around the Cowdenbeath goal for the next ten minutes but, with the slight Ross Campbell ploughing a lone furrow up front, could not carve out any clear-cut chances. In the 32nd minute, Filipe Morais did threaten with a volley from a loose ball, but home keeper David Hay touched away his effort. Hibs were failing to find any rhythm and former Easter Road midfielder Jay Shields was proving to be a particularly robust opponent.

In the 55th minute, Dene Droudge mis-directed his cut-back to the edge of the area but it fell perfectly for Marek Tomana, who fired high past Grof from 14 yards out.

Paatelainen then had to be spoken to by referee Colvin after a series of baffling decisions from the officials and, following an apparent handball by Droudge, he was sent to the stand by the official to cap a difficult night for the Hibs manager, who claimed some of the Easter Road players had been guilty of "showboating".

"It worries me because there is no room for slack attitudes and application," he said. "I want every player to have the right attitude and that wasn't the case.

"Players have to remember that as well as you can play into the side in these matches you can also play your way out of it."

Cowdenbeath: Hay (Morris 83); Droudge, M'Bu, Hodge (Cenerazzo 70), Adamson; McGregor, Shields (McKay 83); Tomana (McDonald 86), Robertson (Ramsay 46), Fairbairn (Ferguson 57); McQuade (Lynch 86).

Hibs: Grof; McCormack, Canning, Jones, Stevenson; Morais, Cropley (Trialist, Yantorno 62), Chisholm (Welsh 70), Rankin, Trialist; Campbell. Subs not used: Flynn, Welsh, Booth, Currie, Byrne.

I did not like the football Hibs had been playing for the last 6/7 months. I did not enjoy watching Hibs at all. Hibs are playing boring football - players abilities, Mixu's midfield selection, player's positioning . . . . . the team are a complete shambles.

What does Mixu do at training - effectively nothing.

The boys look less fitter since JC left.

I think Mixu does not have a clue! (tactics & an eye for players & contacts).

I also think there is something totally wrong at Hibs.

Just sack everybody & go with the U-19's.

It is time for a fresh start from top to bottom.

Absolutely hacked off & my family are loosing interest in the forthing season..........Poor football & Relegation battle here we come.

Cammy,

It's not looking good for us. Don't know whether to laugh or cry.

We're really not a great team, but nowhere near as bad as this, which should beg the question, what the hell is going on?. Also if Mixu is really getting so upset at these games, then that not a good sign of his state of mind.

I see that we're looking yet again at players who "will add to the quality of our side". It just seems strange that they are all players that I've never heard of, and don't seem to be able to get a game anywhere else. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I'm a "glass half full" kinda guy, who's fast turning into the "glass half empty" guy. Thanks Hibs.

Thank god for Hearts, just when I think that things can't get any worse, I remember just what a horrible state they're in and a small smile returns. So thanks Vlad, you may be mad, but you're keeping me sane.

PS: Look like a tough fight for last place this year. :-)

have been out of scotland for 3 years now.i sometimes go along to watch crystal palace these days. prior to that: govan front ibrox for many years. does this have anything to do with my point about the state of football in edinburgh? first and foremost i support scottish football and want a competitve league and cup set up.the obvious place to look for this competition is edinburgh.

Another poor show. Wonder how long this will go on for, and how long it will take, should it continue, for the fans to show their feelings with their feet? Also, strange there has been no mention of season ticket sales this season. Are Hibs frightened to tell us?

Thanks Jamtart, You're a star.

The only thing that has changed since Gretna, a team with no money or players, easily turned your mob over, is that you eventually got a manager.

Not any of the ones you wanted, just they only one who would take it, and only because he wasn't currently getting paid.

Now you think that this means your club is back on track and everything has somehow changed.

You are a hoot..., Gullible as hell, but a hoot.

PS: I hope you enjoyed your lunch, I'm sure we'll talk again this season.

Thank you for your vision Cammy I am indeed a star and I can assure you not at all gullible.
I had a very pleasant luncheon thank you.
Now down to business, yes you are correct the only significant change at Valhalla so far has been the new manager and yes he was not the first choice, however I also do not think he was the only one willing to take the job.Despite the poor showing (ok very poor showing) by the jambo's last year I firmly believe that amongst quite a few duds we have some fairly talented players if they are trained properly by a decent manager.
The soon to be Sir Csaba Lazslo, who may just be that man, has been making all the right noises and may turn out to be a refresing breath of fresh air around Tynecastle.Hopefully the Ugandan boy will get his work permit and with a couple of decent strikers signed before the season starts I can see no reason not to be optimistic.Unfortunatly I can not share the same optimissim for your team.A total lack of goal scorers, manager with no idea and not a great deal of talent available.I fear a very dark year is in store down Easter Road way.

A very pleasant day to you.
Will look forward to hearing from you again in the future.
Having enjoyed lunch so much I now feel another small respite to imbibe a few tinny's the Fosters Amber Nectar may be in order.

Well if Mixu was close to resigning this week last night certainly won't have convinced him to stay.

Some of the worst players ever to pull on the green and white are stealing a living from the club at the moment. No wonder nobody else wants any of our players withthe exception of Benji and Fletch...they are all murder.

We are a 1st Division team in all but name..will be the first season in many that I won't be pruchasing a season ticket and I can actually see me finding somehing else to do with my Saturdays as I'm that scunnered.

Mr Petrie, get in someone who knows how to organise a football team.

Get in Billy Davies.

It's not difficult with the same squad (but well organised) to get markedly better results in the SPL if you actually have a canny manager.

Worth 350k pa I would suggest, seeing as there will be nearer 14k per week at the ground, than nearer 8k under this dross

If you want some precedents, how about Burley, Mowbray, McGhee (anyone who saw the last game of last season will tell you that Well played the Hibs way)

Get Billy Davies in now, and even tho we won't win the league, probably not the cups either, we'll be back to being the keepers of the flame - how football should be played.

You're lucky to be the CEO of a fottball team whose fans don't demand silverware.

But they DO demand good football.

You don't need to sign 6 new players

You just need a good manager

Go get him

I did say a few weeks ago that Mixu would be away before xmas and I was shot down in flames.....

The problem down at Easter road is Mixu and Rod Petrie have ahd a major fall out..

Mixu didn't want the Barcelona game whilst Rod & the bgoard thought that they could pull in close to as many as Hearts did last year - when it became apparant that it wasn't going to happen - the £150,000 that it cost Hibs to stage the game came straight from Mixu's player budget.....

He has been told that any player who comes in must be a Bosman or £75,000 transfer fee max and top wage is £1000 per week....He has also been told he can only sign 3 players

Whilst pre season results normally dont mean anything, especially as "Fringe" players or young players get their chances, I think this shows Mixu hasn't a clue, the fact he is being sent off in friendlies as well only cements this even further. His actions last season at Ibrox and other games showed his aggresive side (Not saying he shouldnt have been annoyed at watty backstabber though for what he did) but the way he reacted in that game and others and the way he has Hibs playing hoofball and kick anything on the park should be quite worrying.

Hibs should have won this last night even with fringe players, and even it was to restore a bit of confidence after being hammered by Barca.

What wookie says about Mixu and Petrie falling out I also heard a couple weeks ago, about Mixu being refused a player because the wage was approx £1300 give or take, and actually asked this on these forums if this was true. It seems not all tings are as transparent as Petrie and co would have you believe. If Petrie is refusing players because of paultry wages in the region of 1k a week then surely you have to be asking the questions, just where is all your money going? what about season tickets sold so far how many have been sold? last count a few weeks ago was approaching the 10,000 mark, at the very least that money should be made available for players.

We may have our problems, but surely and quickly Hibs are problems are looking a lot more worrying and prospects looking a lot less bright down Leith way

Poor results up to now. Yesterday's was a disgrace. Coming on the day that the club was fined for poor discipline it shows a complete lack of self control for the manager to be sent packing.
Lots of utter garbage in the threads but also some serious stuff. Whatever anybody says about Mixu the truth is things are not looking promising, in fact it looks decidedly dodgy under his watch. It might be a step to far for him at this stage of his career, if so Petrie should be man enough to admit the mistake in selecting him and move on to better days. IMO no point in waiting for the inevitable.

39 & 42..

I deal with Hearts & Hibs daily on a professional basis - and have done for over 10 year - so know 1 or 2 people their qiute well - hence all the juicy gossip...

Unfortunatly Vlad is not the only one who gets "involved" - Rod seems to like questioning the managers judgement on players - which causes problems -he then grills the player asking him if he thinks he is worth £1500 or £1000 or whatever the player is asking for - the end result is the players 90% of the time tells him to shove it!!!
47

stanton4,

The problem is Petrie ...plain & simple ... it always was.. he refused to back Tony, and left him with nowhere to go. In the space of 18 months he has presided over the fall from a club genuinely capable of beating anyone, to this.

He has to go, but while he is getting plaudits from people more concerned with balance sheets, training grounds and 4th stands. ( or more interested in slagging the other lot's financial meltdown that supporting their own team ) then he will be fine.

hands up all you boys that STILL think Petrie is doing a great job.

And another thing, where is all the press critisism of what is happening at ER

Having said that, he is not lining his own pockets ..after all he has only a minimal stake in the club, but I do not understand what his agenda is

Spot on chaps. It's a pre-season friendly game, primarily designed at this stage of the season to build up match fitness.

I'm happy to wait and see, I'm not subcribing to all this doom and gloom mince. The real thing starts in a week on Saturday and with a few new faces coming in and players such as Zemamma coming back, could we maybe start being slightly positive?

OR should we all just get on Mixu's back. Cause that's really going to help, eh?

Well I wont hide, it was a complete shocker even if it was a friendly. Its all getting very worrying. I hear we have signed 2 players, not exactly getting the pulse racing however!

Ah well, Saturday afternoons in the pub are looking a good shout just now.

Wookie. You state that you deal with Hibs and Hearts daily on a professional basis. Any professional person would know the difference between there and their.
Facts are facts, your comments seem to be driven with a personal agenda and not worth your time on the keyboard.

To be fair to Wookie, Id also heard the other weekend there about the player being refused rumour. I actually asked on these Hibs threads last week if it was true or if anyone else had heard about it. I don't know anything about them falling out over the Barca tie, thats news to me, bu i was told there had been a falling out between Petrie and Mixu over a player he wanted and Petrie knocked it back immediately as soon as he heard the player was going to cost £1300 p/w thats the figure i was told.

Like most things though there just rumours, and there might be nothing in it at all, but thats now 2 people not connected in anyway that have now asked or posted about this.

Surely just a friendly and a bit early for Hibbies to get concerned. I had a look at Hibs fixtures and they have a reasonably soft few games early on so my guess is things will settle down a bit after a few wins.
The sending off though is of concern. Mixu is starting to get a reputation amongst refs and we know where they are coming from and what will now happen in future games especially when Hibs play the OF.

Oh, I'm not too bad bud. In all the hysteria of Hibs just now I appeared to have missed all the Hearts signings and big pre-season wins!!

Sorry about the spelling mistake - If it upsets you so much I will just keep to myself the things I hear from inside the clubs..

As a going away present - Hearts will be granted planning permission for the new stand after the planning meeting on 10th Oct

Hearts and hibs wouldnt make a reasonable team between them. They arent even second rate. As for palilienen i hope he stays and when you get relegated you would have found your level for the next season. Edinburgh is in a sorry state as far as quility teams go.

Nah, mate you're ok. Just ease up on the Fosters - its not good for you.

I am not fussy about the cowdenbeath game or the Barca game or the Elfsborg fiasco

but I have been concerned for more than a season now about how my club is being run....... don't give me that cr4p about the season not having started. We were absolutely murder for the most part of last season, and looking at it in the cold light, we are even weaker this time round.

Why are we not signing anybody to replace the dross that has been brought in.

I ask again who still thinks Rod is doing a good job

Will wait for the first round of SPL games before calling for any heads to roll, but am becoming very concerned.
Pre-season is important. Last year we didn't lose a game, and beat Bolton and Boro into the bargain who were only 1 week behind us in terms of pre-season training. The result was soaring confidence in the team and a flying start to the league, briefly topping the table.

Compare with this year, no wins and no goals scored. Manager sent to the stands, and confidence surely at a low.
Hibs and Hertz appear to have swapped pre-seasons. Thank God we are not at the bus shelter first game this year....

"and the 6-0 thrashing from Barcelona in recent days"

7-0!
Remember!

How can your players be "showboating" when they are getting beat 2-0 by a team from a lower division????

Mixu can only be judged on one thing, and that's his foolishness in taking the job in the first place. The lack of cash pre-season proves why Collins left.
The £150thousand a year chief executive Petrie is the one Hibs need rid of. Bricks and mortar won't sell the season tickets, and certainly wont win trophies.
12 days to go and what a depressing situation.

#77 number of goals scored is six, all against Montrose last week. No-one seems to have been mentioning that. Then again that was just a mix of first teamers and reserves. ;0)

A jambo calling Hibs fans arrogant? I have heard it all now!!! I can only assume that you were in another country when the big team, your no challenge to us now, its Hearts and Old Firm, nonsense was going on! Pot - Kettle - Black springs to mind,

Lenny, after the cr*p posted on here for the last 2 years I think you've just got to take your medicine.

I know you don't litter the threads with nonsense like some of your fellow Hibbies so don't take any of the comments too seriously, they're not aimed at you.

Lenny,

Jambo83, I have no probs at all with a bit of abuse. Its completely justified at the moment.

I still think that a Jambo calling a Hibee arrogant is pot-kettle-black though.

hearts fans can't really talk. bottom 6 last season, beaten by gretna and are millions of debt and probaly a bottom 6 finish again

hibs need to try bring in some quality players and try and keep fletcher if we want any chance of getting 3rd place

Cowdenbeath 2 - Hibernian 0
Oh Dear
It gets worse not only did Hibs fail to score tonight we were totally outplayed.Cowdenbeath should have been at least 3 up by half time, instead of the one goal from a penalty, and thats being kind.In the second half they also created all the chances and Marek Tomana converted a great goal from a strike from the edge of the box, following great build up and cut back.Minutes before that cowden a managed to miss from 2 yards.
Mixu feeling the pressure was sent to the stand for giving the referee and his assistant a hard time.I am glad I have not bought a hibees season ticket yet,I think Ill keep the money and spend it on hankies and earplugs.

Fabian Yantorno made an appearance but he looks a long way short of his skillful self due to being out for so long.

The Cowdenbeath striker Paul Mcquade showed simailar skills and touch as Motherwells Ross Macormack but we won't sign him as Mixu won't have noticed him.

What I want to know is this - was Zibby playing, and if not, why not?

The cabbages can't expect success without a top class keeper between the posts.

I'm sure he will be back for the first derby of the season. I certainly hope so.

#86 You seem to forget your weeteam has the worst derby record in Europe, your passports have been barely used for long enough and you haven't won the Scottish Cup for 107 years!! Hibs have had nothing big to shout about in decades so you lot would be better keeping shtoom!!

Cam from oz you are right about the glory they are worse than the hibs.
I think some of the posts I put on yesterday were actually aimed at cammy from edinburgh who is a hibby not at your good self a fine jam tart.
Now re the fosters I don't really drink it all that much cept when back in edinburgh cause most of the lager over there now including tennents reminds me of cat p#ss.more a VB man actually.
Do you go and watch the mariners at all.I went to a few of the glory games a couple of years back when they had a decent team but even then the standard was IMO Scottish 2 Div at best.
got do some work now, talk to later.

Oh dear... Mixu and Petrie must stay!

And if the new stand goes ahead with no chance of it being filled at this point, Hibs will be on course to match Hearts in debt.

At least the Yams got the Scottish Cup.
