Hearts 1 - 0 Dundee Utd: Ugly win will look good to Romanov as pragmatic tactics save season

NO-ONE would have confused this gritty display with a celebration of the finer points of the beautiful game, but at least there was enough resolve and conviction from Hearts to give Stevie Frail's men an outside chance next weekend of claiming a place in the top six.
Since winning ugly seems to be all the rage these days – Rangers showing the rest of the SPL the way by regularly fielding a lone striker – Hearts arrived at the conclusion in this game that beggars can't be choosers. Leaving Christian Nade up front
on his own, Laryea Kingston and Saulius Mikoliunas were deployed on either side of Michael Stewart, Eggert Jonsson and Ruben Palazuelos.

It was a system designed to choke off the lines of supply to United's forwards and make Hearts harder to beat. After losing 11 goals in their three previous encounters with Craig Levein's side, this was a commonsense solution to an ongoing problem. Rather than take the game to United and leave themselves vulnerable to the counter-attack, Hearts attempted to play the Tannadice club at their own game.

Thanks to a towering performance from their captain Christophe Berra, who looked every inch an emerging international centre-back, and enough skilful interventions from their most talented footballer, Kingston, Hearts went on to win this match on merit. On a day when the result mattered more than the performance, the bottom line was Hearts banked three points and retain a chance of staggering into the top six if they defeat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday and Falkirk lose at Pittodrie.

Remembering only too well how it feels to have to cope with the weight of high expectations in Gorgie from his own time in charge of Hearts, Levein had no quibble with the pragmatic system of play used by Hearts.

"They've been suffering from a lack of confidence and I don't blame Hearts in the slightest for the way they played," reflected the United manager. "What was important for Hearts was to win the match. They scored a goal against the run of play and then they shut up shop. They started time-wasting ten minutes into the second half. But, good on them, they needed the points.

"Hearts are a little bit vulnerable at the moment and if we'd scored first we'd have won the match. But we didn't. We gave them something to hold onto. They've been getting a little bit of criticism and so has Stevie. I know myself from having been in that position exactly how difficult the job is. So if you have to shut up shop to take the points, then so be it."

Levein felt his own side lacked a spark up front and one of the reasons United found scoring opportunities thin on the ground was the barrier erected by Berra. Against the imposing figure of Mark De Vries, the Hearts captain won all but every ball in the air, rallied his team-mates with impressive authority and looked like a player who will represent his country in the not too distant future.

If he was a little disappointed not to make his Scotland debut against Croatia last week, at least Berra's self-esteem was enhanced by his involvement with the squad and his performance against United was one of his best for Hearts. "None of the (Scotland] substitutes knew whether they would get on or not," he recalled. "Obviously, I was disappointed not to play. But hopefully there will be other chances for me in the future. I didn't sulk about it and came out against United and put in a good performance, as did the whole team."

Hearts got their noses in front after Willo Flood failed to control an overhit pass in central midfield. Jonsson latched onto the loose ball and sent a fine, diagonal pass into the path of Kingston. The Ghana internationalist ghosted into the space between Garry Kenneth and Christian Kalvenes and gave himself a shooting opportunity as he strode into the box. Kingston still had plenty to do at this point and perhaps Lukasz Zaluska, the United goalkeeper, should have offered more cover at the near post. Nevertheless, Kingston's diagonal shot was struck early enough to rip through a narrow gap into the corner of the net.

In truth, after that 27th minute goal, Hearts only threatened intermittently. Nade might have scored from the inside-right position when Kenneth was caught out of position and Mikoliunas missed a close range sitter. Otherwise, the contest remained in the balance until the closing stages when United were reduced to nine men. Kenneth went off for two late yellow card lunges, the first on Kingston, the second on Nade. Danny Swanson, the hero of the hour against Motherwell the previous week, was booked for dissent not long after appearing as a substitute and was subsequently shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Jonsson. Luckily his boot didn't make contact with the Hearts' player's leg, but the tackle was high and late.

If owner Vladimir Romanov, who was sitting in the director's box for the first time since Aberdeen were defeated in November, needed any re-assurance about handing responsibility to a new manager next season, he might reflect on the progress made by Frail – in their last 11 league games, Hearts have only lost to the Old Firm – and the potential which surely exists under a more experienced leader who is given authority over team affairs.

Shutting up shop??? I was at the fame, and the Jambos were far superior, and had far more shots on goal that at DUFC side that completely lost the plot at the end, following the example of big Wilkie, who is lucky he was still on the park IMO

So we can comment on this article but not on Glenn Gibbons' report on Kevin Thomsons' outrageous dive against Celtic. Still nothing from the venerable Gordon Smith who so detests such cheating!

The first half was grim, the goal from Larry being the only highlight.
The second 45 was better, but in all honesty, we are no longer a team who excite.
Never thought I'd see the day when we'd play with a lone "striker" against Dundee Utd at home.
Utd. were no better, so Levein can have no complaints, and some of the challenges toward the end of the game were pretty "meaty" from his lads. The effect of which, was to waken us up and add a bit of atmosphere.

#6 Probably because the "comments" from the usual miscreants would involve the site admin boys working overtime and ultimately closing it down!

But you're right about Smith & Co. It will be interesting to see the level of coverage this incident receives compared, say, to the guilt-by-association furore that surrounded Hearts after the Miko incident at Hampden.

And this in a match where Miko wasn't even playing for Hearts.

James,

Stewart and Mickeymouskas started the rough stuff - the ref only seemed to come alive when United players meted out rough justice.

#3 Dont worry we had our 'keeper sent off last time at Tombcastle - didnt stop us beating Rangers at Tannadice the following week. History can repeat.

#6 & 8. Gordon Smith still working on his outrage statement in conjunction with Walter Smith on an earlier incident, when Hutton faked being head butted by a Lyon player, over a foot away, on camera.

Absolute silence when suits these guys.

#9 Don't be a clown! Miko's about 8st when he's soaking wet and barely committed a foul. Stewart committed two and neither were in the class of Kenneth's or Swanson's.

Kenneth was lucky to last as long and how Wilkie and De Vries both avoided a caution for persistent fouling, God only knows. A stronger ref and you'd have been lucky to end with 9!

It might have been an ugly win but Dundee Utd were even uglier.

There was not much football played but, what there was, was played by Hearts.

Once more a big thankyou to the Jam Tarts for giving us the chance to go into the split in third.

One of the very few bad things about living in Oz is the lack of SPL coverage on TV over here. Of course they'll show the smellies when they 'play' each other, but no one else gets a look in really. Having said that judging by the reports from the weekend it would seem i haven't missed much this week. Dross in every game cept the sheep lovers and inversneckie. Who would have thought, eh...

#9 James from Dundee. Dry your eyes, mate.

Your mob never had a shot on target to speak of.

De Vries is still trapped in Berra's back pocket.

Hunt did not look interested.

You lost the plot.

Wilkie is a whining girl.

Swanson's tackle was ridiculous.

Enjoy the rest of the season as Levein starts to lose confidence and you scrape and scratch your way to a few more points.
16

GrahamL,

31/03/2008 09:38:36
Spot of damning with faint praise from Levein there!
"Hearts scored a lucky goal, then killed the match off - but thats what you do when you're desperate"

Ach well, keeps the interest in for next week which is something, but... meh. Still find it hard to actually care, just finish the season now, tell us what the grand plans are for next year, and maybe then we can get some enthusiasm back.

This was the first home match i missed this season. After last weeks game which is one of the poorest i've seen in a while i decided to go to the shops.

From what i understand i didn't miss much. The first half was dire, the second not much better. I was also told that quite a few season ticket holders never bothered to turn up for the game. Its a poor situation when season ticket holders don't turn up for a must win game. After suffering 90 mins of that rubbish i'm supprised vlad hasn't halved the season ticket price.

Indie Rep Kid,

#20 Only a few folk never turned up - hardly masses of empty seats.

It might have been poor in terms of quality but, in terms of application and attitude and desire, it was promising.

And if you were bored, you could always have laughed at Little Britain's Lou & Andy in the Utd support.

#19, Profaldo,
I am also recognising, and i realise you are the only one on this site without the essential grey matter to work this out, that all teams owe their respective league positions to all other teams they are in direct competition with...

That is why it is a league, you complete flapjack...

Honestly, some people...

Not a great game but points in the bag. Feel i should comment on the attendance 16,800 for a team doing sod all in a woeful season.
Last week (week before?) - Celtic took 3,000 to Livingston (30 miles from Glasgow) while sitting 2nd in the league.

#26 Not sure if Dundee Utd at home has ever been guaranteed 3 points for us. In fact, I can;t remember ANY game being a guaranteed 3 points.

At least we never lost 4-0 again.

Anyway, one up front CAN work if the striker is suited to that position and gets support from midfield. Nade isn't and, for too long, there was no support. I thought he played well and worked as hard as I have seen him. He also showed some nice touches. It was embarrassing to hear the Hearts fans get on his case when he was isolated for so long and simply chasing Wilkie and Kenneth.

Good result for us - We need to start building for the new season.

Kingston was quite clearly nowhere near match fitness but still turned in a great performance. He makes such a difference to our team.

Other good performers were - Jonsson, Neilson, Berra, Palazuelous, Miko and even Goncalves.

Best i've seen Miko for a while. When he chased the utd defender down to the corner flag and won a corner i nearly fell off my seat.

I thought Nade led the line quite well considering his limited support from midfield. Also thought he showed a great deal of commitment as he took a battering from Wilkie all game and was up for the battle. The only thing i thought he could've improved on was his distribution. There was a couple of times when he had a pass on and dwelled on the ball too long. Agree about some of the supporters as well, some of them really don't have a clue. It wasn't Nades fault he was left isolated up front.

Miko has been a bit better the last couple of games but he's not the answer and never will be. Couldn't understand the OTT ovation he got when he came off considering the number of poor performances he puts in.

A more balanced article than many of the Sunday papers who basically ignored the fact that Hearts played a containing game, got a goal and sat on it...
This was a god awful game - both teams made two chances - one team converted one...but one team is guaranteed top six!
37

A Jambo come rain or shine,

31/03/2008 14:30:47
#37 We scored, Miko had a header saved in the first half, he missed a sitter in the second half, Ruben wasted a clear overlap and shot in the 2nd half, Robbie hit the post and Ruben had another shot off target in the 2nd half. That's 6 i can remember. Not suggesting we were great but having created nothing against Falkirk last week i'm much happier this week and we deserved the 3 points.
38

Mikee,

Let's face it even though United ended the game with 9 it was still one more than Hearts had left the last time the teams met.

Th 'Tynie Fortress' crew are amusing. Was that in the old second division perhaps?

The scary thing, surely, is that Romanov brought Korobochka with him.

Is this supposed to send out a positive signal to a potential, new, "quality" manager?

Or does it expose Romanov's supposed quest for an independent manager to be a sham?
