Architect laughs off Haymarket critics

THE architect behind plans for a towering hotel development – partly blamed for triggering a probe into Edinburgh's world heritage status – has hit back at his critics.
Richard Murphy, whose designs for the 17-storey complex in the Haymarket area have been compared to "an alien spaceship from Dr Who", has vowed to laugh off the jibes and protests.
He has blamed a "New Town mentality" for the scale of opposition and insists the breaking of the skyline with the Haymarket hotel will be "a good thing."
Mr Murphy has spoken out just weeks after Unesco's director-general called for work on major developments such as Haymarket to halt, pending a 12-month investigation into Edinburgh's world heritage status.
Mr Murphy said: "Virtually every building I've done in Edinburgh has been subject to campaigns to stop it happening. I've now got an incredibly thick skin about it and I just laugh."
