EFFORTS to bring a pair of pandas from China to Edinburgh Zoo have met with opposition in the Scottish Parliament.
Revelations in The Scotsman that the pandas could come to the capital from Wolong Research Centre in China's Sichuan Province has provoked concern among some wildlife campaign groups.

They have been backed by Robin Harper, a Green MSP, who has
put down a parliamentary motion raising concerns about the proposal, which could be signed and sealed before the Beijing Olympics.

Mr Harper said: "The Scottish Green Party supports efforts to conserve giant pandas, but we are concerned that the proposal to attempt captive breeding for re-introduction into the wild has little prospect of success."

He called for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to work in collaboration with their counterparts in China, investing with them in extending and maintaining panda habitats.

And he added: "Restoration of habitat is now the major issue, and far and away the best way to protect pandas, as with so many other endangered species."

Mr Harper has taken on the campaign pushed forward by Advocates for Animals, the group which has persuaded Mike Hancock, a Liberal Democrat MP, to put a similar motion down in Westminster.

A spokesman for Advocates for Animals said yesterday: "Edinburgh Zoo seems to be putting money, visitor numbers and the prestige of having unusual animals in its collection above concerns for animal welfare and conservation.

"If Edinburgh Zoo wishes to help giant pandas, this should be by supporting in situ conservation in Chinese panda reserves, along with moves to preserve the animals' natural habitat.

"To make the provision of support for such projects dependent on the acquisition of animals for exhibition in a Scottish zoo is, in our opinion, unethical."

There were concerns that the workers and pandas at the Wolong Research Centre may have been in danger from the recent earthquake in China.

The centre is near the epicentre of the earthquake, but it was reported all 86 pandas, including 13 cubs, were unharmed by the disaster, which has taken the lives of thousands of people.

The agreement to bring pandas to Edinburgh Zoo is meant to serve two purposes – to help in the breeding programme to boost the number of pandas currently standing at 2,000 in the world, and also to provide a crowd-puller for the zoo.

The pandas coming to Edinburgh would be aged between two and three.

Oi, Harper. They are trying to reintroduce humans back into the natural Austrian habitat at this very moment.

Can you not get a sense of perspective?

CAPTIVITY and freedom.

I know! Let' put some greenies in cage and watch what they do. Don't like that idea? Not 'interesting' enough? I agree, let's put the greenies where they belong, back in their box and let the zoo have the pandas!

A typical Scottish response "We better no try it in case it disnae work". Very negative thinking there.

Far better to let them die in an earthquake zone, isn't it?

It's also short-sighted - it's through seeing some animals close up in zoos and safari parks that people can gain an understanding of the issues they face and so become more interested in wildlife conservation and welfare.

But this is Scotland - where any new ideas must be stamped on immediately! You'll have had your pandas.

From the DailyMash -

HANG ON, THIS ISN’T MAJORCA, SAY ANGRY PANDAS

A PAIR of giant Pandas who arrived in Scotland this week have claimed they were duped after being promised a fortnight in Majorca.

'I'm supposed to be water skiing!'Chi Chi and Cha Cha said they only agreed to leave China after officials offered them a two-week stay in a seaside apartment in the picturesque village of Deia.

However, once on the plane they learned that instead of going to the beautiful Balearic island they were being sent 'on loan' to Edinburgh zoo for ten years.

Chi Chi said: "Who are these people? I've spent all my life in rural China and I've never seen such poverty and bad teeth. And I can't understand a bloody word.

"We were promised a fortnight of snorkelling, and our own hire car. We end up living in a hole in the ground, surrounded by our own mess.

"Ten years? You get less for murder. I want to talk to my solicitor. Where the feck's the WWF when you need them?

"And I'm knackered. I've only been here a day, and every time I go outside someone throws a bottle at my head."

He added: "I don't like chips right, or Mars Bars. I just want a bit of bamboo, and a number for the nearest Chinese.

"I'd thought the break might be good. I've been under a lot of strain recently, you know, everything’s not been right down there. But this has just made it worse."

Good to see the Green treehuggers focusing on the usual relevant stuff in the Scottish Parliament again.

Plastic bag ban, carbon footprints and now pandas. The greens at Holyrood are certainly getting involved in weighty matters.

What on earth has this to do with Harper and his green treehugging mates?

This is really about money for the zoo isnt it?....why can the pandas not remain where they are, in an environment more appropriate to their needs and be supported in their reproductive habits?...

Bringing them over here to have hordes of unwashed gawp at them aint going to cut the mustard....

As a life-long tree hugger I deplore efforts to import aliens-animal, vegetable or human.

I particularly deplore the alien Scotti who colonised us and gave us a name change. Send all Scottis home to their trees. Briton for the Brits!

They must have heard that there's no Chicken Tonight here after all. One for Wendy and her "vulnerable two-year-olds"?

Or maybe we could negotiate a deal to swap the pandas for the greenies and see how it really is to check out the bamboo shoots for lunch.

Time for the zoo to go! They are no longer what the public want and animals should not be banged up in cages in this day and age.

ZOO TO CLOSE!

It is telling how so many people want the pandas to come to Scotland to live miserable and pointless lives regardless of well being.

So, why stop at imprisoning them in a concrete cell ? It would be more humane to give them a quick death which could also be used as a money-spinner. Why not have a Nero style cage fighting night , pandas versus humans or pandas fighting other zoo animals ? You could charge a lot of money for that. It would do Edinburghs reputation less harm than imprisoning these poor creatures.

Drop the pretence that you are fond of these animals and start charging our resident panda-loving psychos rent for sharp sticks to poke them with.

You will all change your minds after watching "Kung-Fu Panda". It's a publicity stunt for the new film. The two new Pandas are starting up a kung fu school for all the other animals so they can protect themselves better and not rely so much on the WWF or the greens.

i am sick of this idiot robin green banging on about green issues, take a chill pill mate and leave the pandas alone, at least the pandas will not be a drain on the taxpayer and more importantly will bring revenue into the cities zoo so that will in turn benefit the rest of the park thru more modern facilities,

take a hint robbie, shut your bloody mouth and go back to hugging trees, the more you keep yer mooth shut the better it will be for the planet and the populas at large

The usual post from ignorant scumbags who know nothing about the issues’ facing wildlife. Pathetic all they can do is slag off the “green movement”, and with the usual crap insults, tree hugging, eco fascists’, eco Marxists, etc.

Mr Harper said: "Restoration of habitat is now the major issue, and far and away the best way to protect pandas, as with so many other endangered species” he’s bang on the nail with this.

# 2 Jock Tamson,
Whats Austraia got to do with Pandas?

#3 DunCraig, Brisbane, Stupid comment, Do you do anything for Australian wildlife? No, thought not.

# 7 DAVID,Edinburgh
The green party are concerned with green issues’, which when you look at it really is THE most important thing facing the world today, pity idiots like you can’t see that.
8 Unimpressed one, See above, that also applies to you.

#10, Spot on, but you might as well talk to the wall, you would get more sense

17 spud the enforcer,
