Killen on target as Celtic sink Southampton

GOALS in each half from Chris Killen and Barry Robson gave Celtic a 2-0 victory over Southampton in Claus Lundekvam's testimonial at St Mary's last night.
Killen gave the Scottish Premier League champions a 26th-minute lead when he finished low, left-footed, following good work by Scott McDonald.

Robson doubled the advantage emphatically from the penalty spot in the 67th minute after Georgios Sama
ras – who earlier this week sealed a permanent move from Manchester City – had been brought down in the box by Andrew Surman. Samaras went close to a third goal before former Saints favourite Matthew Le Tissier came on in the 76th minute, to the delight of the majority of the crowd of 18,664.

Celtic play Fulham at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

Meanwhile, West Bromwich Albion have completed the £3.25 million signing of England international Scott Carson from Liverpool. The 22-year-old goalkeeper, who played in 35 Barclays Premier League games for Aston Villa last season, has penned a four-year contract. The club also have the option of adding another year to the deal.

Carson could cost the club £3.75m depending on performance-related criteria. His arrival takes West Brom manager Tony Mowbray's summer spending on transfers to £13.75m after the signings of Roman Bednar, Luke Moore, Do-heon Kim, Graham Dorrans, Gianni Zuiverloon and Marek Cech.

England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson named Carson in his 2006 World Cup squad and he made two B international appearances for his country before being handed his senior debut in a 1-0 friendly win over Austria in November. Five days later, with regular number one Paul Robinson out of form, he was thrown in at the deep end in a make-or-break Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia, but his competitive debut ended in misery as England slumped to a 3-2 defeat, with Carson culpable for the Croats' first goal.

Stoke have signed striker Dave Kitson from Reading for a club record £5.5m. The 28-year-old has agreed a three-year deal to become Potters boss Tony Pulis' first summer signing.

Kitson scored 54 goals in 111 appearances for Reading but has decided to move on following their relegation from the Premier League.

GIRFUYYOC

A little-used Welsh term of endearment, which appeared in the original lyrics to Led Zeppelin's "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp", from the folksy/bluesy 3rd album, but didn't survive the cut because Robert Plant found difficulty in constructing a following line that rhymed with it.

Rough translation: "Ignorant and proud of it!"

Le Tiss played for 10 minutes....the rest bar 1 was their first team squad....

Meanwhile...we gave 4 youth reserves players an outing....and I have to say...young Caddis gets better everytime he plays...he had an excellent game again tonight!

How can you claim to have "accurately predicted" something that hasn't actually happened yet?

And if you are in that line of business, shouldn't your name be "psychIC" rather than "psychO"?

Championees!
I said it would be a long (hot summer) if we lost to Ranjurs!
Well it is passing all too quick because it was the sweetest end to any season - that (I care) to remember - and and I know how they're hurting!
It's hard! -- but you have just got to look ahead and believe that you have the ability to achieve the impossible because make no mistake - despite all the hope that you have in your heart and all the courage that you can muster - you know that the inevitable is going to happen and you will be left with that "familiar" deja vu a year from now BECAUSE it's gonna be 4IAR!!

------------------------

I have to disagree - in the sense that you have not allowed for changing circumstances.

Impossible - based on current parameters.
Inevitable - again based on things as they appear to be!
deja'vu - transitory familiarity - again "familiar" - but containing no guarantees for the future- but when it happens you will feel in a comfort zone(2nd in SPL)

As an aside to the usual OF bun fight - have you seen the story about David Kitson? An average player going to a non-entity side for a fee that neither OF team (don't deny it) would baulk at.

This is the world our teams live in these days. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing - both Rangers and Celtic have shown what can be achieved in Europe with teams made up of 'cheap' players - but without the money Sky brings into the English game, neither side can realistically compete with EPL sides' buying power.

46 - your spelling is fine, and Taupo does have good trout fishing.

Here in NZ, old Maori place names beginning with ‘Wh’ are pronounced ‘F’.

For example

Whakatane = Fah-kah-tah-nay

Whakapapa = Fah-kah-papa

QED it was a whakup.

Lets call a spade a spade, the opposition we played and beat, makes the tic beating of the Saints look much better.

I know its only pre season, but if WS does not get some midfield help in soon, we could be looking at a long season. And please no more central defenders to be signed.

It was a good, solid performance by Celtic, without really breaking sweat. I was very impressed with the swift passing and link-up play in the first half.

Saints goalkeeper saved them from a doing in the first 45 minutes. Second half was more even-Stevens but the victory was never in any doubt.

Mizuno's distribution looked impressive and Caddis turned in a fine performance when they came on.

A good result and a decent performance overall to start pre-season.

Always laugh at how seriously rangers fans take pre-season friendlys! They're warm ups, nothing more. If we'd won or lost last night, it wouldn't have mattered or have had any bearing on what will happen in the forthcoming season.
I suppose they've got their pre-season cup to think about though, that's one trophy they always seem to be awarded by their media chums!

In fact, it wasn't a raffle, it was a 2nd prize in the horse lookalike contest.

Princess Anne took first prize.

Just think ReaRangers fans, had princess anne not looked like more of a horse than Kirk Broadfoot, she could have been your right back last season.

The ReaRangers collapse at the end of the season may not have happened.

Damn your horsey face pricess anne! DAMN YOU!!

After watching the first half of ReaRangers game against Schalke, Yoofa delegates have passed a new edict for the forthcoming season.

The team who scores first against ReaRangers wins the game.

Clearly as they have no intent in attacking, Yoofa believe that this is in the interest of fans who can get to the boozers before the end of the game and not miss anything.

Schalke fans are to be offered a refund of entrance fees.

I suspect that you could have safely bet your shirt on Rangers losing by a single goal to good quality Bundesliga opposition in Germany. After all, it's exactly what happened in pre-season last year, exactly what happened in last season's CL, and exactly what happened in last season's UEFA Cup, so it's something of a trend.

I doubt if WS will worry too much over the result. It's the kind of game, and kind of opposition, that will stand Rangers in good stead for the forthcoming CL qualifiers. It's also worth bearing in mind, when trying to use today's game to assess Rangers, the number of potentially important players who were missing, such as McGregor, Cuellar, Smith, Ferguson, Lafferty, Beasley etc.

Now, if we'd just shipped 3 goals in losing to a team that survived in the Premiership last season by the skin of their teeth, THAT would be slightly more worrying :)

As you can clearly see, my last paragraph was very much tongue in cheek. Pre-season friendlies ARE very much about fitness and match practice rather than results, although a win is always welcome, particularly if you put a first-choice team onto the field.

As for the other matter, the baby is not here yet and is now one day overdue. As I do already have two toddlers however, my daughter does indeed have a wee brother.

But not yet a second one.
