HIS high-profile political antics as a sun-tanned socialist have guaranteed him his place as a household name in Scotland, but bookies have revealed Tommy Sheridan is proving "as popular as the plague" with Big Brother punters.
Sheridan and singer Mutya Buena are proving the least endearing Celebrity Big Brother contestants.

The former Sugababes singer and the firebrand former politician had both been quoted at 25/1 to win the Channel 4 show. But Ladbrokes have had to push their prices out to 33/1 and 40/1 respectively.

Spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "Tommy and Mutya are about as popular as the plague at the moment. We didn't expect a politician to set the heather on fire with the punters, but we're not sure what Mutya has done."

Worse still for Sheridan is the revelation that his fellow housemates have been struggling to remember who he is. Singer LaToya Jackson and 2ft 8in actor Verne Troyer, who played Mini Me in the film Austin Powers, failed to recognise him.

They sat discussing the housemates, and after Sheridan left the room, Michael Jackson's sister asked Troyer: "Who was he?" The 40-year-old actor replied: "I want to say 'Michael'. At least we know some people here. I know you and I know (rapper] Coolio."

Troyer remains favourite to win, but his odds have gone from 5/4 to 13/8 after television presenter Terry Christian went from 12/1 to 6/1. The other celebrities who entered the house are singers Michelle Heaton and Ben Adams, topless model Lucy Pinder, actress Tina Malone and former presenter Ulrika Jonsson. The 11 will battle it out for the next three weeks under public scrutiny, facing regular tasks and evictions.

Sheridan, who spent his first full day in the house working out in the bathroom, was booed by the crowds as he entered on Friday night. On last night's show he revealed his sensitivity about going bald and urged fellow housemates not to treat Troyer any differently from the others because of his height.

Speaking before entering the house, Sheridan explained his reason for taking up the challenge: "Why not? It's an honest offer of employment."

The 44-year-old, who is reportedly being paid £100,000 to take part in the show, is currently studying law and has no regular income. He failed to gain re-election to Holyrood and recently lost a slot on Talk 107 when the station closed.

Imagine Americans not recognising a Scotish politician. They're usually such informed, well rounded people with a talent for international matters.

Sheridan is probably well matched to the wretched people who enjoy such mind numbing television.

Fortunately for Sheridan, communist and admirer of Fidel Castro, most of his Scottish supporters are really thick(Salmond, Galloway, etc).

1) The average salary in Cuba is 14 quid a month.

2) Sheridan's fee is 7,140 times the Cuban monthly salary.

3) So some poor Cubans would have to work for...wait for it..... at least 595 years to get this cash.

That's right Mr Sheridan, you stand up against Thatcherism and capitalism while millionaires like Galloway and Salmond cheer you on!

Thank goodness we have Sheridan to speak out against the 'ever widening gap between rich and poor'.

You just couldn't make this up.

The only thing I like about Sheridan is his commitment to a cause (his own) however repugnant, self serving and ill thought out.
Little wonder that he joins other champagne socialists like Galloway when they can spot a nice little earner. It shows them up for what they are.
Big Brother is the brain dead watching the brain dead under the illusion of entertainment - get a life you morons!

£100k for a few days of being filmed is an offer you cant refuse, especially with a family to support, sometimes your wife overrides your principles

Just wait until Big Brother bosses reveal their "sensational bombshell" and bring on John Leslie to confront Ulrika!
Oh, have I given the game away??

Ah, the Scottish Socialists:

The only political party in the history of the world to go to court and actually prove they couldn't organise an orgy in a brothel.

Still, it's nice to see the boy do well. He may be a bit of a choob, but politics would be much less interesting without him.

Funny definition of unpopular, to not be known by Michael Jackson's sister or the guy who played Mini-Me. From Verne's quote "At least we know some people here. I know you and I know (rapper] Coolio." it seems Tommy's not the only one they've never heard of.
They're not well known to me, and unlike Michael or the character Mini-Me I'd guess there far less well known than Tommy in this island; in Scotland they're probably over 100 times less famous. Not got anything against them like, but whether I end up liking them will probably depend on how they get on with Tommy.
Funnily enough the only Scottish socialist (or British socialist, or Scottish politician) Verne and LaToya are likely to have heard of is the man who took on their Senate, George Galloway=)

Tommy Shridan is a clown but he is also somebody who should be ignored as the mediocrity he is. Socialist for people down on their luck? Don't make me laugh, here he is stuffing his own pockets with heaps of cash and laughing at those poorer than him.

I can't imagine anything worse for an intelligent man (whatever you think of his politics, he does have a brain). Being locked in a house, no contact with the outside world, no newspapers, no radio, no books, not even anything to write on - only airheads to talk to.
Dreadful.

Ewan Oosami,

That surprises me. I always thought you and Tommy would fancy a threesome with Mandy.

Tris,

Has anyone bothered to find out what he's doing with the fee....? Or have you all just decided that he's greedy unprincipled git, based on the fact that half the other so called-socialist party, Labour, are?

Don't let any lack of knowledge stop you from making side-splittingly amusing posts, will you?

I have to agree with Starkravingsane though... the rest of the housemates sound like knuckle dragging airheads. I'm surprised they don't have to be reminded who THEY are in the morning.
