Government survives Commons' calls for EU referendum

THE government last night refused to bow to demands to stage a referendum on the European Union reform treaty after winning the first round in the battle to have it ratified.
David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, faced a storm of opposition from Conservative MPs and back-bench Labour rebels over the Lisbon document.

After a fiery five-hour Commons debate, MPs last night backed a second reading of the European Union (A
mendment) Bill, which ratifies the reform treaty, by a majority of 138.

Although 18 Labour back-benchers and four Nationalist MPs had signed an amendment calling for a referendum on the document, it was not subject to a vote as the Commons speaker decided against calling it.

Supporters of a referendum say the treaty is virtually unchanged from the abandoned EU constitution.

Labour had promised a referendum on the constitution, but this was shelved after being rejected by French and Dutch voters three years ago.

The treaty creates an EU president and a vastly more powerful foreign-policy chief for the bloc's 27 nations. It enshrines the 2004 EU charter of fundamental rights, but Britain has obtained an "opt-out" on having any new rights imposed by the European Court of Human Rights.

Mr Miliband insisted a referendum was unnecessary as the treaty did not amount to "fundamental constitutional" change. He said the Lisbon treaty was "good for Britain and good for Europe".

To Tory jeers of derision, Mr Miliband insisted that the treaty marked the end of a process of institutional reform in the EU – which had "gone on too long and taken too much energy".

Labour MP Frank Field, a former minister, said: "Apart from those other governments who also don't want to face their electorates and test their views, what other bodies of equivalent standing has the government got on its side?"

William Hague, the shadow foreign secretary, said of Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, who was on a visit to India and missed the debate: "Having signed the treaty… he wants to force this through parliament, but lacks the courage to vote for it himself."

Mr Hague accused the government of "brazenly abrogating" the commitment Labour had made to hold a referendum.

Andrew Robathan, a Tory, was forced by the Speaker to retract comments that the speech by Mr Miliband – who has a Jewish background – was "worthy of (the Nazi minister] Göbbels".

VOTE DEBATE
Why the government SHOULD hold a referendum:
• Labour promised to do so in its manifesto.

• The reform treaty is almost the same as the constitution.

• It retains the President of the Council of Ministers and an EU foreign minister in all but name.

• It changes the structure of the EU.

Why it should NOT:

• The concept of a constitution is dead.

• Britain and Europe's legal relationship has not changed much.

• Plans for a flag or anthem have gone.

• Britain's "red lines" on work and social matters are protected.

#3 A Better Way. There are some really creepy people on these threads and you are one of the creepiest. What on earth has Mr Milliband's being Jewish got to do with any part of the debate?

It's time we stopped preaching democracy until we start practising it.

A referendum is pure democracy and Calamity Brown is showing he is Bliar's clone by denying us the final say. The implication is that we are collectively too stupid to control our affairs and so need management by the selectocracy.

Not that I trusted them in the first place. I hated Neo Labour before they came to power in 1997. Special interest groups keep voting for them, but I think even they're starting to recognse their stupidity.

What will YOU do to save us from the EU?

646 traitors gather together like turkeys voting for Christmas.

Rest assured their end will come swifter than ours, for Hitler disposed of all the traitors that had betrayed the German nation into his hands, first, before he even dealt with any of his enemies.

Reckless is correct: Fascism - Communism it's all the same thing - loss of freedom for the people.

One is dictatorship by one man the other is dictatorship by unelected committee as in the EU. The EU is a Communist Soviet based system.

Scottish Independence is only in the minds of deluded sheeple like Wardog!!

Ah, I see that Common Purpose is active in the Scotsman. It's always a sure sign they are about when people speak the truth and their comments are deleted.

Reckless was quite correct when he pointed out that our Queen has signed five treasonable documents and in doing so has broken her Coronation oath. That oath is supposed to defend us from rule by a foreign power unless we are defeated in war.

The EU is a foreign power and if she signs this reform treaty she will have broken her oath completely and that dear people is Treason.

What interested me was not Labour breaking this promise (predictable), but the Lib Dems helping them out by doing the same!

I reckon another proof that there is a covert arrangement between Labour and the Lib Dems operating, - which extends to Holyrood.
A journo in the Herald reported about a year ago he had heard that Ming Campbell and Brown had made a secret deal whereby the LDs would support Labour in return for PR for Westminster.
Sly, cynical, anti-Scottish and anti-democratic....Yup, - about right.

The more I think about it the more sense it makes.

When the Speaker of the House of Commons refuses to allow representatives of the people to put forward a motion to allow the people to express their opinion it would seem to me to be the end of democracy. The only cousrse open would seem to be for a latter day Oliver Cromwell to go in and say "Gentlemen, you have sat too long".

Having a gimp like Gordon Brown as PM is bad enough, but I don't envy the Americans when Hillary becomes their new Mr President. Just remember, the people didn't vote for her. She has been selected by the ruling elite. Ron Paul is the people's choice.

EU/US "single market" next stage in Bilderberg/Trilateral plan for world government

Correct Ron Paul is being denied a fair hearing, wrong about EU/US befor ethat Bilderberg has imp[lemented a start for NAFTA, when that is in place it will be NAFTA/EU so about 10 -15 years away.

Hilary or MacCain this time for 8 yrs then Jeb Bush for the transitional years to NAFTA/EU. by that time the constitution will permit SVartzneger to take his role as Leader of the "free" world.

I would love to say you heard it from me first but I cannot take credit ........... OK maybe a wee bit ............ makes me feel knowledgable for a minute.
