The top 10 cultural events in Scotland today
1 MUSIC: DEACON BLUE

Ricky Ross & Co continue to soldier on after reforming in 1999, despite the death of guitarist Graeme Kelling in 2004. Later this year they will be returning to the kind of mega-venues they performed in at th
eir career peak, as guests on Simple Minds' big comeback tour. In the meantime, this is your only chance to catch them in Scotland this summer, on a brief tour that goes on to Gateshead and Liverpool.

• Perth Concert Hall, 8pm, 0845 612 6324

2 FILM: IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS

THIS hipster, low-budget comedy does that rare thing in cinema: it treats romance with the awe and respect it deserves. Set on New Year's Eve, it sends aspiring screenwriter Wilson and wannabe actress Vivian on a rambling romantic odyssey around a secret Los Angeles. Writer-director Alex Holdridge's characters are endearingly articulate slackers who spout witty and polished dialogue, and it culminates in a beautiful, unexpected ending.

• Cinemas nationwide.

3 THEATRE: OUR HOUSE

This musical based on the songs of Madness has had mixed fortunes since its opening in London back in 2002. It won the Laurence Olivier award for best new musical, but some critics' verdicts were harsh. It's back, though, heading off round the UK.

• Theatre Royal, Glasgow, 5:30pm and 8:30pm, 0870 060 6647

4 MUSIC: LLYR WILLIAMS

In a series of two lunchtime concerts at this year's East Neuk Festival, called The Romantic Dream, pianist Llyr Williams plays contrasting works by two pianist composers. Today, in part II, of the programme he performs Janácek's On an Overgrown Path and Schubert's Sonata, D 784 in A minor.

• Crail Parish Church, Crail, Fife, noon, 0131-473 2000

5 THEATRE: LEST WE FORGET

The studio theatre at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen has 166 seats. This week, though, one will be added to pay tribute to the 167 men who died in the Piper Alpha disaster, whose 20th anniversary is this year. Lest We Forget, a new play, tells the Piper Alpha story – the run ends on Sunday, the anniversary date.

• Lemon Tree, Aberdeen. 7:30pm, 01224 642230

6 MUSIC: SHEILA CHANDRA AND HUUN HUUR TU

An East Neuk Festival showcase of Asian vocal tradition, in a venue converted from byres and stables (audiences are encouraged to turn up early for a look around). Huun Huur Tu also play an intriguing show tomorrow in an aircraft shelter at RAF Leuchars.

• Kinkell Byre, near St Andrews, 7:30pm, 0131-473 2000.

7 THEATRE: THE CROSS AND THE SWITCHBLADE

Adaptation of David Wilkerson's novel about a young Puerto Rican called Nicky Cruz, whose skill with a blade make him one of the most feared figures in the New York's underworld. There's a second performance of the play tomorrow evening at the same time.

• Aberdeen Arts Centre, 7:30pm, 01224 641122

8 THEATRE: SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER

Oliver Goldsmith's comedy She Stoops To Conquer – a tale of arranged marriages versus true love, first performed in London in 1773 – is full of sunny reason and deft mockery of foolish pretensions. It's revived here as part of Pitlochry's summer season.

• Pitlochry Festival Theatre, 8pm, 01796 484626

9 VISUAL ART: VANITY FAIR PORTRAITS – PHOTOGRAPHS 1913-2008

Many of these celebrity portraits are breathtakingly narcissistic, but there are many fascinating pictures in the show, including one of a young Albert Einstein.

• Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, 10am to 5pm, 0131-624 6200

10 THEATRE: THE WEDDING SINGER

Based on the 1998 Adam Sandler movie, this is a dog's breakfast of a musical that does little more than go through the Hollywood rom-com motions, via terrible songs. On the plus side, there are good performances from Jonathan Wilkes and Natalie Casey.

• His Majesty's Theatre, Aberdeen, 5pm and 8pm, 01224 641122
