Falkirk

CHRISTMAS came early for the Hibees on Saturday as Falkirk's defence gifted goals in a very untypical display. Lee Bullen, so assured and confident as he strolled through last week's game with Rangers, was exposed time and time again, something I sincerely hope was a one off for the big man.
Losing a goal after less than a minute of each half getting underway was clearly unacceptable. The side did well to claw their way back into the game after Hibs early two-goal burst, during which their very mobile strike pairing of Colin Nish and Ste
ven Fletcher had the Bairns back three on toast.

Young Mark Stewart, another product of Yogi's conveyer belt of youth, came on and within five minutes nearly grabbed two goals with a low shot and a rasping angular drive that cannoned of the post. I don't think I am alone in thinking that this young lad deserves a start, especially as the Bairns still have such a lengthy injury list. Who knows, we might just surprise Celtic this Saturday.

Motherwell

THE weekend brought another game and another loss for Motherwell despite turning in a performance which, while not brilliant, didn't deserve to end in defeat. How long do we give it before we start panicking?

Football is a results driven business and though we could easily be sitting on four points just now, we have yet to get off the mark. We face a crunch game against Dundee United on Saturday but if we lose that we could easily have no points after six matches as a trip to Hibs is next before we face both the Old Firm!

It is hard to be sure what differences there are from last season. Mark McGhee will have his work cut out this week in trying to figure out a plan to turn things round. McGhee himself will be under pressure – not because Motherwell fans expect to finish third every year but since they expect value for money. McGhee earned himself a substantial pay rise in the summer and failing to register a point before the end of August simply won't be acceptable.

Rangers

AFTER the controversial sale of fans' favourite and player of the year Carlos Cuellar, Rangers couldn't afford not to invest in new players and the first of these to arrive, Pedro Mendes, pictured right, had an exceptional debut as Rangers enjoyed a relatively comfortable victory over Hearts.

Mendes added the grit and vision in the middle of the park that has been lacking badly in the opening games and if he carries on as he started then the support might have a new midfield dynamo that offers that bit of excitement. With more new arrivals promised in the coming days then on the playing side the Rangers support can probably feel a bit more relaxed on that front but it's obvious big problems still exist at the club.

St. Mirren

GAMES between ourselves and Kilmarnock are often goalless and while that was the case on Saturday, it certainly wasn't boring. Both sides created chances and hit the woodwork and it certainly wasn't your typical 0-0 draw.

However, for much of the game the Saints performance was a repeat of many last season, with nice, pretty passing but very little product in the final third.

We were the lowest scorers in Scotland last season and have now failed to score in our last five games. There was little evidence on Saturday to suggest we're going to improve on last season's goal tally.

While signings were made over the summer to solve the problem, hardly any of them played against Killie. The only new boy who could be classed as attack minded in the team was Tonet, with Tom Brighton and Dennis Wyness on the bench and Steven Robb injured.

Andy Dorman was only a sub and Craig Dargo is currently injured. Perhaps once they're both fully fit we'll start banging them in.

Stuart Gillespie www.saintmirren-mad.co.uk

Hearts

HEARTS put up a reasonable performance at Ibrox on Saturday and while it would be hard to argue that we should have won the game, there was no doubt that some key decisions did not go our way. Some things never change.

Miko's first booking in particular was very harsh and he seems to have become a marked man by Scottish referees. I can't remember the last time a foul was given for a challenge on him.

Rather than dwell on the weekend Hearts must look forward to the next few games where they should be picking up points if they are aiming for an improved league position this season.

Games against St Mirren, Hamilton, Falkirk and Inverness should give Csaba Laszlo the opportunity to settle into his role and possibly introduce our new signings into the team. While we know these teams will be difficult opponents they were all in last year's bottom six.

Finally, good luck to all the Hearts players on international duty this week.

Hibernian

THERE was a collective sigh of relief from both the Easter Road stands and the hibs.net message board as Hibs' fine 3-2 win over Falkirk lifted the spirits of all connected to the club. It wasn't so much the fact that 3 points were plonked on the SPL table, but more the fact that Hibs played the game at a great pace and with an attacking style rarely seen under Mixu's management to date.

So, a winning home start and an extra satisfying one for Colin Nish who responded to last weeks horror show at Kilmarnock with two well taken goals. How nice it would be if he could take that goal scoring for north with him, when Hibs travel to the Highland capital on Saturday.

No goals, no wins and not a lot to shout about from our visits to Inverness over the last few years, should give Hibs all the incentive they require to right that wrong. If they carry on the form shown against Falkirk, I'd be hopeful that the new found feel-good factor will last that little bit longer on our forum.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle

JOY - Sitting top of the table after a first ever win over Aberdeen.

Excitement - The prospect of seeing new signing Adam Rooney.

Despair - The weekend's performance and result in a nut shell.

That was the week that was for ICT fans this week. Having gained that first win over Aberdeen with superb performances by the likes of Ian Black, Dougie Imrie and Don Cowie, hopes were high for gaining another 3 points against Hamilton.

Yet the aforementioned players seemed somewhat absent, as the 4-5-1 formations played by both sides simply cancelled each other out.

Youngster Jamie Duff will surely come back a stronger and wiser player after his error lead to the only goal.

Can Mr Brewster and the ICT stars turn this around against Hibernian on Saturday? I for one think they can. We seem to always spoil their day whenever they visit, so why should now be any different?

Rob 'Gringo Jnr' Wilson www.caleythistleonline.com

Kilmarnock

IT HAS been a decent start to the season for Ayrshire's finest with a hard-fought victory over Hibs and a point from our last-ever visit to Love Street. I would probably accept a point from most away ties, and a well-drilled St Mirren are no exception. Killie were the better team in the first half with the Buddies dominating the second so a draw was a fair result.

The midfield were a bit off the pace with Mehdi Taouil having a bad game by his own high standards and new signing Manuel Pascali kept in check by an over-fussy referee. Obviously Paska's "kill 'em all" reputation had preceded him! We were in dire need of a midfield general type with a good first touch and a no-nonsense approach, and he appears to have it all, but, at this rate, he will do well to steer clear of suspension!

Our other new signing Conor Sammon obviously has potential but he still looks a bit raw. I would like to have seen Donovan Simmonds get a run out for the last twenty minutes or so to see if he could break the deadlock.

Barry Richmond www.killiefc.com

Celtic

SUNDAY'S draw with Dundee United was a more upbeat performance, played at a higher tempo than the opening fixture against St Mirren. Shunsuke Nakamura's return gave a more cultured, cutting edge to the side, particularly in the first half where we passed the ball forward at pace.

Jan Vennegoor Of Hesselink won every ball in the air against big, physical defenders. When Scott McDonald finds his range and confidence the goals will begin to flow again.

It appears that the recurring theme this year will be claims of refereeing decisions going in our favour – brilliant! I'm all for it. For years if we complained about decisions against us we were told "it evens out eventually" – this must be it at last.

As for referee Charlie Richmond's injury, it was caused when Naka was booted off the ball, sending him flying into the official. Maybe he was too sore to worry about the foul and anyway, he can kick him back in the next game.

Tommy Dornan CSA

Dundee United

SURELY it must have been more than just United fans who appreciated the irony in Charlie Richmond being helped from the Tannadice pitch by Neil Lennon and the Celtic physio on Sunday?

After the previous week's 'controversial' penalty award for Celtic against St Mirren, we were treated to yet another abject/incompetent/corrupt display of refereeing, which only serves to illustrate further just how futile a task it is to expect a level playing field against either of the Old Firm.

To add insult to injury, our manager Craig Levein has effectively been gagged by the so-called powers-that-be from commenting on practically anything other than the colour of the grass!

We were unlucky to fall behind before we had the mandatory stonewall penalty against Celtic/Rangers turned down and then a further two claims were also shot-down. I was proud of my team's performance but I am totally disgusted at the pointlessness of the SPL as a competition.

Hamish Mackintosh www.dundeeunited-mad.co.uk

Hamilton Academicals

OUR win on Saturday was as impressive as the 3-1 home victory over Dundee United because Inverness has proven a difficult away game for many an SPL side. To go there and win sets down another marker for Accies.

It was especially pleasing to see Richard Offiong get his first SPL goal. He is sometimes maligned by minority elements of the Accies support for supposedly being lazy. He can be as lazy as he likes as far as I'm concerned, as his strike ratio of one in every two games has made a massive difference to us. A glance at Offiong's career would suggest something has gone wrong somewhere. Promising youngster at Newcastle and playing at youth level for England, questions were soon asked after his career went wayward before he landed at New Douglas Park.

Sometimes it just takes the right club to get the best out of a player (look at Scott McDonald at Celtic). Offiong seems to have found the right club at Accies and long may the relationship continue!

Mark Falconer www.setbb.com/acciesworld/

Aberdeen

SATURDAY'S victory at Motherwell is unlikely to remain in the memory for long.

However, to take all three points from a side the pundits reckon will be challenging us for a Uefa spot was most satisfying, especially as it saw the emergence of two potential Red Army heroes.

Ever since David Robertson left for Rangers, we've lacked a genuine left back. We've had plenty in the intervening 17 years who could defend, plenty who could overlap and cross but never one who can do both like Charlie Mulgrew. It's just a crying shame that just as we finally get a left-back we discover we don't have a right back.

Aside from the melodramatic media reaction to a headbutt that never was, Tommy Wright also made an immediate impression, with his style evoking memories of cult hero Dean Windass.

Hopefully he'll keep his cool this Saturday, though, as it's going to be hard enough beating Rangers' 12 men without being a man down.

early days but Mendes looked too good to be playing for us and a midfield of Davis, Thomson, Mendes and preferably Bresciano would have the measure of yourselves. Brown is athletically gifted but would be intellectually overwhelmed by a garden gnome which limits his effectiveness. Nakamura is hit or miss, Robson has a decent left peg but looks like he's running in quicksand with McDonalds backside for added ballast.

#2 and 3, aye you with the stutter. You know there's a comment by a celtic fan on this article too, yet your first and foremost priority is to comment on Rangers. An all too common occurrence in the comments sections of this website

Yep, there's no doubt this is one pretty garbage Rangers team. Too many plodders who would struggle to get in our teams of the early 80s and now, thanks to (at long last)some midfielders brought in last week and this, a massive squad with too much deadwood that needs to be considerably trimmed. Quantity over quality seems to sum up the Rangers squad, contrary to the promises made by Murray before the end of last season, though with Mendes, Davis (as long as he sorts out his minor dispute with Fulham), Edu (subject to a work permit), Aaron and, hopefully, Bresciano this could well have been sorted. One problem we have no control of is selecting a referee who can win the game for us. No such problems for our old firm rivals though, as the 12th man (be it Brines, Smith, Richmond, McDonald, Conroy or Thomson) are now winning matches for their beloved team almost single-handed with a string of disgraceful examples of corrupt decision making, but after the furore of Mike McCurry's last visit to Ibrox in May the message from the press now seems to be (lip service apart) 'Carry on regardless'. The same message is also conveyed to the celtic support by the football authorities, as the hooped horrors continue to bring out their full repertoire of terrorist anthems with impunity. celtic have, on a number of occasions, pleaded with their supporters to drop their terrorist baggage, but Sunday's match at Tannadice has shown the message continues to fall on deaf ears. If a group of Muslims were to chant Al Qaeda slogans in a football ground their would be uproar, but, while the Scottish sports press are still on the moral high horse over certain Rangers songs that have all but died out they continue to tolerate, condone and even promote repu

Down here we treat Auchinleck people with great respect, since they all run about like extras from 'Deliverance' - which was in any case rumoured to have been filmed on the River Lugar near Auchinleck; but up at Tannadice, they get stuck into them, mad.

I suspect Dave Jones is a rearrangerz fan at heart, or at least holds the club in some affection, or is possibly connected with Minty direstly or indirectly.

For the last 6 weeks or more, Walter has been trying to land the dutchman, and the reponses from Jones were simply about the price and that if rearrangerz could raise their bid, business could be done.

As was reported in the Daily Rearranger, Walter upped his bid to £2.5m whereupon Celtic "within an hour" came in and matched them, allowing Loovens to make a straight choice between the clubs.

No other clubs had made a formal offer.

Loovens chose Celtic, and after the deal was sealed, Jones comes out and accuses Loovens of "a lack of ambition" for choosing to play in Scotland.

Smells a bit Minty-esque if you ask me. Minty doesn't like The Champions shafting him in public, and he likes to take his revenge any way he can.
Loovens only had two options : Celtic or Rangers, and so it was always going to be Scotland.

I am left with the distinct impression that we would have heard nothing of this rather spiteful remark had Loovens elected to go to Losers Rearrangerz.

Hey, when's Murray going to update his breathtakingly gullible masses on the new £700m superstadium/govan redevelopment?
It was a huge announcement to make. Not something you would announce surely without already having firm plans in place with the architect, developer and council. Unless...oh no...dare I say it....it's another great big pork pie!
What a prat he makes of himself and the club. And, by the way, he's spent an AWFUL lot of other people's money. Show us the full accounts Murray. Because any possible investor will want to see them. But that'll be why no-one's interested in buying the club, isn't it. He has a bit of a bad reputation in the investment community has Murray. Too many other investors have had their fingers (and their wallets) burned investing in his hairbrain ideas.
But what really takes the biscuit is his latest drivel about storming out of a takeover meeting at the last minute because he, the altruistic one, declares the prospective buyers just didn't love Rangers enough. Yep. It was just like that. Murray, your laptop poodles might believe you, but you're not fooling the rest of us. Your 'little tales' are embarrassing and make me wince. But I suspect you almost believe your version of events.

Brian,

It was a spiteful remark, and he had no obvious reason to be so...£2.5m for a player he was going to lose in January for free?

So WHAT was his beef?

It wasn't so much an attack on the spl as it was a personal attack on Loovens vis a vis his 'lack of ambition'.

Since there were offers from only Celtic and Rangers, his options were Scotland (and the champions league) or remain in the championshionship.

And so, on analysis, it doesn't actually make any sense to speak of a lack of ambition.

In conclusion, we have a spiteful , personal , insult, for which there seems to be no apparent or visible explanation AND it doesn't actually make any sense.

From that , we must conclude that in probability there is some underlying or hidden bitterness about Loovens deciding on Celtic which Jones doesn't want us to know about.

Thomson for Edu as i felt that his loss for games at San Giro was pivotal (along with refs letting Robson & Hartley away with murder)and he can always be relied on to get a body if we're getting beat - sad but true!

Not sure about Beasley but Hinkel looked mince on Sunday and its about time we went for them

Miller will be up front and due to fact we'll be under a bit of pressure and lack of pace in Celtic backline, match could be tailormade for him - and i'd hope he'd have something to prove - still remember Johnston lobbing Bonner at darkheid and resultant gnashing of teeth amongst the funsters

I'd forgotten that the runners up were coming along to paradise next week....it's such a big occassion for them, coming to the home of the champions, that they are immersed in detailed selection speculation already.

Firstly, they will play their first away from home match against a top six club....and we shall see if there is any improvement on last season's deplorable record in that department.
There are some new faces, yes, but will they make any difference ?

We shall see...the Dons are always up for a visit by the rearrangerz and take great delight in packing them off down the A9 empty handed.

Time will tell mate. After the 1st two games NEITHER team has looked particularly impressive although Mendes looks like he will make a HUGE difference.

Early days but he could be midfielder we have been crying out for for the last couple of years.

#70 - Cuellars' performances last season were almost on a par with Gough at his prime and he was unquestionably our best player. However his resultant sale has meant new midfielders who were absoleutely essential as without them even Torres would struggle in our side. Looking for Boyd to get going as if we supply him he'll do the business no question

Seriously......anybody have any ideas why it's taking so long for the accounts to be released from Minty?

I saw a fair bit of the Rangers v Hearts game.....and to be fair Mendes was ok in small packets of the game...but he did go missing in patches....

To be fair he was more inventive than what you've had....

I didn't realise McCulloch was playing for the first 30 minutes?

Other than that....there wasn't to much to get excited about.....after all Hearts have not beaten you at Ibrox in the past 24 attempts at Ibrox....so the result wasn't unexpected.....

When can we expect the Rangers fans to rap the boooooing of Miller.....it's gettin a bit boring!

Paul it's great to see you're concern over the Gers accounts,, myself I could not give a care what happens in the finance offices at Ibrox, my concern is that they try to put a better product on the park for the support. Which they are doing.

You go to Ibrox to watch the team on the park not to read spreadsheets.

Aye you could be right about brickin it.....

After all....the....shift this here....move that there...take away the first three numbers....divide it by 6.....multiply it by 4....factor in some make believe....hide that....don't tell them this....accounting practice is awfully difficult to get right at the first go!

I would not start Edu in the tic match, I think that Thomson should and will be in midfield.

Its a big jump for anyone to make a debut in an OF match, but for a young player coming from a season in the MLS to a game of this tension I think WS may hold him on the touchline.

But it is great to see the options that we now have in midfield.

Yes we did have such a deplorable away record last season, so bad we lost the league by 3 points on the last day.

Maybe you should question if the tic had new faces would it have made a difference in you're points total or form in the first 2 matches?

I know our new players will help the team.

Why worry about something that we/you have no control or say over. The product and results on the park is what supporters care about.

It would be suicide for the lad if was sent into a Celtic Rangers game right from the off.....

The pace and adrenalin is a huge factor to contend with!

Mendes had only been in Glasgow for a day and hadnt even trained with the squad. Taking that into consideration a good debut and he will no doubt get better.

If i were you i would be worrying about your strikers. McDonald looks waay out of shape and iv made my opinion on VoH before. Are you not worried that a slump or injury from these two could leave you drastically drastically short of goals?

Early days yet but 3 of our strikers are off the mark already.

I remember the look of utter incredulation on the face of Reyna when he was halfed by Riseth in the humiliating 3-0 Parkhead defeat which won us the league.

Happy days.....:)

My only question about RFC,, is will we win the league this year.

With the additions to the playing squad the powers at be seem to be responding to the needs of the team and supporters. I only wished they had moved quicker with the new signings.

I would have expected more goals from your 10 strikers?

4 goals in 4 games?.....

Celtic scored 109 goals in competative games last season.....31 came from McDonald and 25 from JVOH...56 in total.....

Who scored the other 53?

It's not as big a problem as you think!

Add Ricksen to the list of Rabbits in the head lights....when got sent off in the first 20 minutes in the 6-2 game....

Now that's what you call gettin humped...;)

They couldn't move quicker Brian....a lot of what has taken place has revolved around the sale of Ugly Betty....

Which was uncertain until the Kaunus exit....

Which involves finances....which you're not interested in!

Had we moved quicker on the player signings, and gambling on making the group stages of the CL the money for the signings would have been there.

I really believe that Bain gambled and lost, delaying signing midfield help, thinking all we had to do was show up and we would qualify.

Obviously the Cuellar fee has now helped in the financing of new players
68

RANGERS LOYALIST,

You can't say Bain gambled. If so that means he's in charge .
And if he's in charge we're feckin doomed.
At least SDM knows business. It's my opinion that HE gambled and lost.
I wonder if Davis dropped his wage demands or Rangers caved in.
I'd really like to know, because I believe the reason it dragged on was because of his wage demands.
And that doesn't spell dyed in the blood player to me.
Bit like wee Barry leaving us in the lurch went he left.

I believe that the Davis deal was always on the cards and that Fulham were wanting the 4mil.

The longer Bain waited to the start of the EPL season and with Fulham spending a ton of money on new players, and Daivs being surplus to Fulham, in my opinion Bain thought they would then take a lower fee for the player.

Which according to some press reports they have at 3mil.

It has been reported that Bain handles most of the financial details on transfers and wages, and yes I know the SDM must rubber stamp everything.

And as far as you're opinion on Bain goes, I agree with you 100%.

Brian I'm sure I remember that Walter put in a bid of 3m for Daivs weeks ago and it was turned down.

I'm pretty sure that Fuham got their pound of flesh in this deal.

In fact, as I recall it was £3.25m
