Published Date: 04 July 2008
ANNAN Athletic have promised they will never suffer the fate of fallen neighbours Gretna after taking their place in the Scottish Football League following yesterday's vote at Hampden.
Henry McClelland, the club's 49-year-old chairman, has been involved with Annan since he was a teenager and sold the pies when they played their first Scottish Cup tie against Stranraer in front of a record attendance of 1250 at Galabank back in December 1979.

That was the day McClelland began to nurture a dream of taking a club who began life in the Dumfries and District Welfare League in 1942 into the senior set-up of Scottish football, a dream realised just before 3pm yesterday when they were elected to the Third Division ahead of Cove Rangers, Spartans, Edinburgh City and Preston Athletic.

McClelland, however, is a man determined not to chase a dream too far or too soon. Annan's progress over the past three decades has been steady, based on the hard work of McClelland and his fellow committee members who have established the club at the heart of their town's community.

It is where they will remain with McClelland determined that the demise of Gretna, whose six-year surge from the Third Division to the SPL on the back of Brooks Mileson's millions proved fatally unsustainable, will not be repeated at Annan.

"If a millionaire came in to try and invest in our club, he would be shown the roads north, south, east and west out of Annan," said McClelland. "We would be lynched by the people of Annan if we sold the club to a millionaire.

"We are a totally different case to Gretna. Our business model is based on what we are and have always been. Our feet are firmly on the ground and that's where they will stay. We don't owe anyone anything and we don't spend what we can't afford.

"We hated seeing what happened to Gretna and we won't allow it to happen to us. We will live within our means."

Annan, members of the East of Scotland League since 1987, emerged victorious yesterday after three rounds of voting from the 29 incumbent SFL clubs finally saw them past the magical figure of 15 required to win.

They topped the first round with 14 votes, ahead of Cove Rangers who polled eight and Spartans who received five. Edinburgh City and Preston Athletic attracted just one vote each, eliminating them at the first hurdle. Annan again received 14 votes in the second round with Cove and Spartans improving to nine and six respectively. In the final head-to-head contest Annan triumphed with 17 votes to 12 for Highland League Cove .

The result is conditional on Annan erecting floodlights at Galabank for the start of the new season but McClelland confirmed they will be in place by the end of July.

David Longmuir, the chief executive of the SFL, said:

"In terms of their overall package, I felt Annan were ready to go when we visited them a few weeks ago.

It is now important for Annan and important for us as well that they do well in the SFL."

Pyramid plans offer fresh hope to candidates who missed out

I wish Annan the best of luck - they're certainly going to need it! I saw Spartans lose (more than comfortably 4-1, it could have been twice as many) to Linlithgow Rose Juniors in the Senior Scottish Cup last season, and Spartans finished about five places higher than Annan in their 'Senior' league. East Stirling must be delighted!!

The SFL committee have, unsurprisingly, taken the safe (and 'watch your back') option. I feel sorry for the others applicants.

Preston Athletic would clearly have brought the greatest quality!

East StirlingSHIRE (there is no such club as East Stirling) have no preference over who is admitted. Why would we?

"vow not to become another Gretna"

If that means not getting into the SPL, I think they are right.

Good luck Annan, I look forward to the day when you proivide your first Scottish internationalist that has come through your ranks

BuddieDumfries,

Well done Annan! See Spartans are saying iys cause they are a good team that they weren't allowed in! Its cause they are a useless cheating outfit GIRUY Lawson!

Russ,

So we have another SFL club within a region that already bosts QOS and Stranraer and clearly couldn't support Gretna.

Meanwhile East Lothian has.......?

Johnny Jambo,

04/07/2008 08:45:31
#5 - yes well done to Annan and good luck to them in the future in the SFL.
However you just lowered yourself to the level of those you believe are making unsporting statements ans spoiled you post.

The Lurgan Tiger,

Time for a pyramid system in which ambitious clubs are given the chance to gain access to the SFL at the expense of those who are simply taking up space and offer nothing in return.
9

Red Dykes,

Highland 04/07/2008 08:56:27
Great to see a club with such a great pedigree (their record in the Scottish Cup speaks for itself) and with a ready-made infrastructure in place - a pitch.
The SFL learned nothing from the Gretna debacle - a dreadful decision - Ayrshire Junior clubs have more potential
10

Alasdair,

04/07/2008 09:04:11
I wish them good luck, although I think Cove Rangers would have been the better choice. The Hootsman, in its typical attitude to the rest of Sxcotland, talked up Spartans and Edinburgh City over the last few weeks. Idiots.
11

The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

04/07/2008 09:17:53
Agreed Alasdair. In the big scheme of things teams dispersed throughout scotland is a better thing.
12

Russ,

04/07/2008 09:45:06
#11

Exactly, that's why we don't need another club in South West Scotland.

In the East of Scotland (south of Dundee) we have Hearts and Hibs and then nothing until you reach Berwick Rangers (not even in Scotland before any pedant points it out).

My personal preference would have been Spartans but in reality Preston Ath/East Lothian FC would have been ideal.
13

Johnny Jambo,

04/07/2008 09:54:14
Russ Personal preferances don't come into it, I would like to see something produced from the SFA showing the submissions from each club and the criteria used to make the selection.

A bit of transparency would go a long way.
14

LaurieD,

Angus 04/07/2008 09:54:17
Exactly Russ, I brought this up before about the fact that East Lothian has around 100,000 people in it and is one of the largest regions in the country - and with no league football! Between Easter Road and Berwick's Shielfield Park there is no league team at all, so I think "East Lothian FC" would have been the best option and would have had real potential to grow as a team. If they could draw support from the surrounding Musselburgh, Tranent, Haddington etc. areas I think they would have been a really valuable addition to the league and it's about time the Edinburgh and Lothians area had another league side.
15

Sedov,

Scotland 04/07/2008 10:02:53
I have nothing against Annan and wish them the best of luck but I agree with #12,13 and 14 - the football supporters in East Lothian deserve their representative team in the SPL and the contenders were every bit as good as Annan. In the absence of transparency as Jambo says this decision, for me, smacks of west coast bias.
16

Ken Fitlike,

04/07/2008 10:11:37
it would have been a good strategic move to get another Edinburgh / Lothian club into the league set-up.

After all there will be thousands of Hearts fans who will need a club to support as soon as Mad Vlad's chaotic reign reaches the inevitable 'Gretna to the power of twenty' conclusion.

The Diggers 04/07/2008 10:13:13
Well done SFL voters.

This is the self preservation society................
18

WJR,

#7 Morning JJ. Now since my wee team is Hibs I should be used to leaving Hampden bitterly disappointed but I'm not (used to it that is).

Well done to Henry and his team, we as a club have a lot of time for Annan, they won't let anyone down.

That was one big lesson for us in football politics but it just didn't help that our ground won't be ready for the start of the season.

I think the pick of next year's EoS ties for you to pay us a visit next year will be Spartans v Edin Uni
19

Johnny Jambo,

04/07/2008 10:21:46
Hi WJR - Sorry you guys didn't make it, but I know you will not stop trying. I will certainly try and get myself to your games, I will keep an eye out on the fixtures.
Somehow there seems to be a lot of negative stuff here about the Spartans response to the decision, what happened their I have not seen much on it.
20

Radge Roberto,

barnton 04/07/2008 10:28:48
Good luck Annan but it's obvious they'll only do well when they get a manager that's managed in Uganda !
21

The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

04/07/2008 10:29:19
East Lothian is hardly far away from Edinburgh. Based on what you say there is as good , if not a better argument for a second team in Aberdeen.

Anyway, it doesnt work like that, the current SFL members vote on their own biased preferences.

Its a stupid system anyway, as mentioned elsewhere scotland is alone in western europe in not allowing a pyramid system.

Lets be honest here , at 3rd division level basic facilities are all thats required.
22

The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

04/07/2008 10:33:38
12 Russ you conveniently missed out Fife.

Shall i go through them ? East Fife , Cowdenbeath , Dunferlime , Raith Rovers, and at a push stenhousemuir and alloa.

How many teams do you want within an hours drive ?
23

LaurieD,

Angus 04/07/2008 11:20:50
#21 Certainly would rather have seen Cove Rangers get in rather than Annan, and you are dead right the system is basically stupid and the teams will vote based on what's best for them. Why would average second and thirs division teams want to see clubs with greater potential getting into the league and possiblt climbing above them?

It is beyond me why there is no pyramid system in Scotland, and like you say it isn't like there is much required in terms of facilities for the third division. We have so many non league sides with great potential it is such a shame that we have no way of seeing them progress further than their current standing simply because of football politics.
24

Ribbonman,

04/07/2008 11:23:51
#3 This club will survive unless they get a visit from the famous Glasgow Rangers supporters.
25

The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

04/07/2008 11:36:30
Spartans are probably right, it probably is jealousy which stopped them getting promoted.

Unfortunately the way it works at the moment has no merit whatsoever. Annan havent exactly been setting the heather alight recently.

No sour grapes, I truly wish them well and they will do well - but I really hope that there is some pressure to change the current "system". It stinks.
26

Bretford,

Whitburn 04/07/2008 12:38:48
To all the Spartans who are claiming the vote was biased, and they weren't treated fairly, can I ask why if you feel like that towards the SFL would you want to the join them?

Or if you had been successful, would you have been praising the democratic process of obtaining membership by your peers?
27

John south of Soutra,

04/07/2008 13:04:19
#14 - Why people in Musselburgh, Tranent, Haddington, Dunbar support an East Lothian team in Div 3 when they all have their own relatively successful and well established junior teams, Dunbar is only around 20 odd miles from Edinburgh with a regular train and bus service. so it's not as though it's much of a hardship to travel into Edinburgh, most East Lothian people do so on a daily basis for work anyway.
We need a pyramid system that allows the good teams to work their way through
28

thedudeboy,

04/07/2008 13:41:10
14 - "it's about time the Edinburgh and Lothians area had another league side"

There used to be one not too long ago. Meadowbank Thistle they were called. C'mon you must remember them! Nobody went to watch them of course, so why would anyone go and watch another manufactured team? Edinburgh needs another senior football team like a hole in the head frankly.
29

LaurieD,

Angus 04/07/2008 13:47:44
Well I was speaking as someone who has been living in Musselburgh for the past year(although about to move possibly), and personally as a Hearts fan who has stopped going to games I would have quite enjoyed having a league side to go and see locally. I hear what you are saying and I know the 3rd division isn't much of a step up from Junior/EOS but I think for a lot of people it may draw a bit of interest - especially if there was some success for the club and they began to climb the divisions. As much as I think the SFL leagues are well below the level they should be and I believe the system is outdated, unfortunately it is the only way to climb the footballing ladder in Scotland to part time and then full time football.
30

The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

04/07/2008 14:44:39
Most of the FUN in scottish football is to be had at the lower league levels in my opinion. Sure , you want your team to do well but travelling to the games, seeing some of the smaller places and interacting with other fans on levels that dont go anywhere near the mindless nonsense of Hibs Hearts Ranger Celtic is good fun.

31

Helen,

04/07/2008 19:44:51
Well done Annan...you really deserve it and I wish you lots of luck. However, the East of Scotland League will still be an exciting and entertaining league to watch and Whitehill Welfare will be doing all they can to defend their League Title. I wish we could get into the SFL and it's looking like the pyramid system is going to be discussed by the SFA.
It really has worked in England...Wigan Athletic are shining examples of how well it has worked. If it's well thought out and well organised it could work in Scotland.
32

Ronson,

Linlithgow 04/07/2008 20:20:35
Laurie D, if you are fed up with Hearts and living in Musselburgh why aren't you watching Musselburgh Athletic?

Well done, Jockoz - and from half way round the world, too! Who's a clever boy, then?

PS Yours was a truly worthwhile contribution.
34

thedudeboy,

I agree Helen, though remember that in a pre-season friendly just under a year ago Whitehill Welfare lost 9-0 to SFL 3rd division champs East Fife.

What a surprise? But I sincerely wish them all the good fortune possible in their coming baptsim in the league fitba'. They'll certainly need it! I worked in Annan almost sixty years ago and it was a pleasure, as the locals were typical good Scots people.
