McGregor nears return to hand Smith a boost
RANGERS manager Walter Smith was handed a pre-season boost with the news that goalkeeper Allan McGregor is set to resume full training after recovering from ankle and knee injuries. The Scotland international has been out since April when he had to
limp off in an Old Firm meeting with Celtic.

"Allan has been given permission to step up his training a little bit more now," said Smith. "I would hope that within the next week, he will be back in among the rest of the players on a full-time basis."

Touzani leaves Dons to head home for Sparta

KARIM Touzani has left Aberdeen and returned home to the Netherlands to sign a three-year deal with Sparta Rotterdam.

The former Ajax Academy youngster joined the Pittodrie club from FC Twente in 2006. Deployed in defence and midfield, his career at Pittodrie was hampered by injury and he made only 25 appearances for the Dons, scoring one goal which came in a 2-1 win against Dundee United at the end of last season.

Dossena deal done as Deggen finally arrives

LIVERPOOL have completed the signing of Italian left-back Andrea Dossena, 26, from Udinese on a four-year deal. Dossena, capped once by Italy, is manager Rafael Benitez's second acquisition of the close season following the arrival, also yesterday, of Swiss international Philipp Degen on a four-year deal.

Southgate lures young hopefuls to Riverside

MIDDLESBROUGH manager Gareth Southgate splashed out in the transfer market yesterday, first clinching a £3.2 million deal for Dutchman Marvin Emnes, then spending £4 million on France Under-21 midfielder Didier Digard.

Emnes, 20, moves on a four-year deal from Sparta Rotterdam, while Digard joins from Paris St Germain.

Kewell's agent rejects claims by Galatasaray

HARRY Kewell's agent has denied the former Liverpool player has signed with Galatasaray, despite claims on the Turkish club's website that the Australian international had agreed to a three-year deal.

Kewell's agent Bernie Mandic said no decision will be made on the midfielder's future until today.

Defenders Dunne and Taylor sign new deals

MANCHESTER City captain Richard Dunne has ended speculation about his future by signing a new four-year contract with the club, while Newcastle defender Steven Taylor also cleared up his future by signing a new three-year deal at St James' Park. It is understood Taylor's new deal will more than treble his wage packet to around £35,000 a week.

Is it possible that all the Scotsman journalists embedded at Murray Park could get round to doing some Celtic stories for a change?
Am getting a bit fed up with all these 'Walter scratched his nose, yesterday' type stories.

Sometimes before I go to bed I read these threads and I have reached the conclusion that most of the people on here have somewhat zoro or next to zilch of a life.

Day in week out it's the same lot, some sane and some not so sane, Gezzus Charisst when is it going to end?
Here is the deal we are the Champs these past few years and you lot have been Champs before us, it looks like we will continue being Champs for the unforeseeable future (get over it FFS) you are in financial trouble! I know I know I know who you bought and who we bought but be patient as all good things come to those who wait.

Who are these people who post continually for 48 hrs (bto and OF) I mean for Christ’s sake get a freaking life! The poster's who really pi$$ me off are the one's who defend a poster without given the said poster a chance to defend himself because Timmy asked the poster a question (Dairy maid). Good morning folks
Just noticed that tottenham have had a £10million offer for Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko rejected by Spartak Moscow.

The Spartak general director Sergei Shavlo declared: 'We have received two offers. One of them is from an English team but since it's not a team playing in European Champions League we are more likely than not to reject their offer.'

Could the other offer be from mega bucks celtic with peter lawell giving the celtic fans their promised superstar?

No didn't think so either. Back to the free transfers or loan signings I'm afraid.

Have a nice day.....

O** F**M/TOP BANDIT is more than capable of making a spectacle of himslef without any intervention.

Leave it out!!

Gawd its boring without the fitba.

Bet the media regret upsetting WGS and the players. His address to the players at Tannadice was outstanding and showed what he and the players feel.

As a result, all the media are getting is he-haw from the Mighty Celts (with the occasional made up KAK which is immediately disproved)..

No news from the Mighty Celts and slow news from the ReaRangers, desperate to fill the void. "Alan McGregor dizny huv a sore ankle any mair!!", "Stevie Smith might 'no get a game" are typical headlines - utter mince.

Lets get a real news story...one like the Riot Survivor tends to stumble upon.

The Riot Survivor has just launched his new patent.

its the water proof/dual purpose bowler hat.

Your barnet stays dry after a long days marching in the rain.

It also doubles up as a carzy. After several bottles of Buckfast, you'll need some relief.Simply turn the hat upside down and away you go! (would have saved people a lot of hassle in Manchester)

All for the one off payment of £18.88.

A flippin' bargain!

It was widely reported in the press that Celtic had made an approach for Pavulychenko before euro 08 and were quoted a fee of around £6m.

However, that was apparently too much for Celtic and there were some discussions to see if the price was open to negotiation. It was then widely reported that Spartak wouldn't budge , and so , even before euro 08 the paper talk was that there would be no deal.

After euro 08 the price has gone up again, but it doesn't really matter because it appears that Celtic had already terminated their interest several weels ago.

Matteo Brighi was bought by Roma in 2004 for €11.5m.
He is Roma's number 2 pick behind De Rossi.

He is described as a defensive midfielder and I would be pleased to see him at CP provided we off-load Donati. All the better if the books balance between the sale of Donati and the purchase of Brighi.

Blackburn Rovers reported to have bid £3m for Davis.
I thought SS had a bid of that amount rejected ... well that's what the laptops all reported.

If the blackburn offer is successful, could it be that the laptops were telling porkies ?

No doubt they will say that £3m was thez figure quoted to them by Bainochio....it will then emerge that SS offered £1m up front and the rest payable over 20 years without interest.

The figure quoted is that Blackburn have offered £3m for Davis , which is bound to have a few SS fans scratching their heads because the laptoployalists reported that SS offered that amount only a few weeks ago and were told that it wasn't enough.

If that report was true, it would seem a bit odd that Blackburn would test their resolve with an offer of the same amount particularly when the player would probably rather go to SS.

To tell the truth i always enjoyed much of the music when i was living in Glasgow, not that keen on the lyrics however.

One of my best mates from uni is an OO member from Portadown and he always did a 'decent' job of persuading me that for him and many others Orangism wasnt about hating Catholics but celebrating his own culture.

I must add he did marry a tim and his kids go to a RC school so good chance was genuine in his statements.

Anyway heres hoping its a nice sunny day for them.

I would prefer to march for a better standard of living. Better health and education facilities etc. If these people feel that they have to march to prove a point, whatever that may be,then good luck to them.Freedom of assembly for all, provided that they don't try to get into the faces of those who do not share their views. I also hope that their day is not spoiled by the good old Scottish rain.

It is hard to believe that a 'member' of the OO would marry a catholic and continue to be an O-man all the more so if his children are to be raised as catholics.

Being in the OO means that a lot of your social life is centred around the OO : weddings, parties, barbecues, get-to-gethers, etc, as well as the actually marching itself.

Even if this friend of yours is not overtly anti-catholic, or even not anti-catholic at all, most of his friends and aquaintences within the OO will be, and once you throw in a few beers at a party, all the sectarian bile will kick off, and you wouldn't want to expose your wife and kids to that kind of social circle.

I think it would be quite impossible for somene to do what your friend has done unless he decided to exclude his wife and children altogether from that aspect of his life, and that would be a very unhealthy marriage.

Its the idiots that follow them I have the issue with. I almost become a prisoner in my own home. I stay close to the main street in a town that starts and ends these days with parading up and down said street. Public drinking laws are ignored and the sight of grown men urinating in front of the house I am stuck in is not my ideal way to spend my Saturday.

The day normally ends with most of them knocking lumps out of each other and general intimidation of normal passers by just because they don’t want to participate. You are automatically labelled as the enemy and treated as such.

Their “freedom” restricts mine. It is pointless going away for the day either because Glasgow is full of them and almost every other town in this area will have the same ritual as the hell hole I’m stuck in today.

Daillyman,

I don't think it takes the expertise of a marriage guidance counsellor to understand that taking your catholic wife and children along to a social event where, after the first few beers have gone down, a noisy group are going to start belting out 'the billy boys' or 'if you hate phenian bassas clap your hands'
is a recipe for disaster.

The fact that those who are belting out these songs are your personal friends and aquaintences is going to make the situation horribly complex.

The bottom line is that you would have to leave the wife and kids at home. And again, it isn't rocket science to understand that any marriage organised along those lines is going to come under a lot of strain.

It's just common sense.

We'll agree to differ on the OO thingy.

Artunes has been quoted as keen to come to CP. He hasn't had much first team action at Roma though notably did line up against Man U in the CL.

Not really what I'd hoped for as regards the left back position...I'd rather we were going for someone aged around 25 with planty of first team experience.
Artunes is wet behind the ears and could turn out to be a duffer.
If Celtic can secure a dependable left back with a CV along the lines I've alluded to, we really take a big step forward and I have my doubts about taking this fella on except as cover for a more prestigious signing.

Bosco Bhoy,

Go along with JR post at 184 that Celtic do not have a solid back 4 and i dont care what the stats say re the SPL or in comparision to Rangers. The Celtic back 4 will cost us goals again in the CL unless improvements are made or players start playing at higher level and stop making fecking basic mistakes.

If our defence could give us a no frills but solid European base then who knows what could happen?

Too often Celtic let down in Europe by sloppy defending and that does my head in.

Look at Rangers last season. Yes i know they were as exciting as watching paint dry and very rarely attempted to go forward utilising the new formation 0f 4-6-0 in many games but still their defendeds did the BASICS right.

Hope to see the German Hinkel demonstrate to us why he has a few caps for Germany this season.

For the last third of last season, the Caldwell/McManus partnership came on a bomb and we conceeded only 4 goals in the last 7 games , all against top six clubs, which is pretty good considering that we won all 7.

Last season, the laptops were right on Strachan's case about how long it had been since Celtic last won away from home on a clean sheet...somehow I think that line of enquiry will be shelved this coming season and they'll bury their heads in stats to find some other line of attack....I'm sure they'll find something, and then they'll not shut up about it...until off-course the Celts tick the box.

I am very relaxed about the right back and central defensive pairing situation going into the CL.
If we can just lay our hands on a good left back, we'll be fine at the back and should be able to avoid conceeding more than 1 per game for the most part...If we win all our home games , pick up a couple of draws on the road and then get pumped 3v0 away to the pot 1 team, we'll be in the last 16 and that's all that matters.

I think WS will make a couple of more signings, a left sided midfield player I feel is a must, I think he may still try to bring Davis to Ibrox.

I think WS will start the qualifiers with Weir beside Carlos in the middle and I hope that Whittaker and Smith are the fullbacks. They can give us some width down the wings.

My hope is that at home we play 4-4-2, in European ties and the SPL. Away in Europe I can see WS sticking with 4-5-1 as he had success last season with the system.

Bosco,

We really only had one horror story during the group stage last year and that was away to Shakthar.
Strachan later admitted that he misjudged the situation , and after they went 2v0 up, he pulled Hartley back just in front of the back 4 and we faired a lot better after that.

What does stick out is Caldwell's unforced error at CP when he gifted the ball to Ronaldinho. Caldwell was unfortunate that Henry's finish was absolutely world class...curling into the top corner from that angle past Artur Boruc takes some doing. I think Henry would have missed that 9 times out of ten quite honestly.

It was a bad error, but the opportunity that it gave Henry wasn't an easy one. If Caldwell did something like that again this year AND it led to a goal, then I think I too would join you and return a verdict of unfit for CL duty.
But he did enough during the second half of the season to persuade me that he can be good for us this season at any level.

I do think WS will stick with 4-5-1 and if you get Davis you will be harder to beat this season.

Dont have a clue who we will sign or even try and sign.

Last season i had such high hopes that Sno and Donatti could do a great job in midfield for us without the labourious Lennon by their side and how wrong was i.Didnt see McDonald having the blinder of a season and scoring all those goals and couldnt forsee Robson joining and being pretty darn vital in the run in and winning those crucial last 5 or 6 games.

Who knows eh?

No fecking atmosphere, people on their mobiles, husbands and wives chatting about the waines etc etc.

The son told me he had more enjoyment going to the matches i had taken him to before at the the Brandywell (Derry City) and Finn Park (Fin Harps) were both gorunds would have likely had less than 3000 fans and the standard of football would be way below a Celltic Aberdeen match.

"What happened to the conveyor belt of talent"

The 10mil $ question.

You are so right about the players going south in the 60's and 70's and to a degree in the early 80's I doubt we will see that again.

As a youngster in the 60's what else was there to do, play football in the street, play for you're school side, play keepy up with your mates, heid the ba against the walls in the close, we always had a ball and were practicing ball skills for fun.

Kids have so much to choose from today, there not may not be the same dedication from all the young players to try to make a living from football.

Look at the economic back ground of some of the worlds top players today and the countries they come from, they strive for a better life and will do everything to succeed.

There is no more liberal country than Holland as far as lifestyle goes.

Listen son I learned a while ago when actually playing the game that every player bleeds the same colour, and nobody on the park give a care about the back ground of a team mate they are playing with.

This new format on this site is annoying, with posters constant references to posts that haven't even been made yet.

I think my best bet might be to jog on the spot at near light-speed for an hour. I'll come back and 10 years will have passed for the rest of you.

BEMUSED EXILE,

Well I guess that's my own fault for choosing a name with a gap between the words. It just invites a numpty to come along and copy the name with an extra space or two, knowing that "The Scotsman" will conveniently close it up.

It has comedic value I suppose, although it does hint at a sad dearth of original thought on behalf of the cloner.

Brian.

Good point. I wouldn't know that if I was a clone.

(Although I suppose I could make it up)

Technically, July 19th, two weeks today, but she's had contractions a few days ago and she's threatening to have it early.

I'd prefer another couple of weeks of peace and quiet, if possible!

What a lot of nonsense today. Everytime it looks like thread is getting back on track the loopers return.

Ninny, if you honestly believe the idiots are all on one side I pity you even more than I used to.

Daillyman, I have had different opinions to you frequently enough but I can at least respect your opinion if only there were more like you.

Giving up for the night. Might go for a walk, apparently it's traditional this time of year...

the riot survivor cannot be cloned...take my name and the spirit returns

for the mods on this site - you sell your advertising on "hits". 1 person hitting this site 50 times a day still equals 50 hits.

as a newspaper, the hootsman has a circulation similar to big daddy afore he pegged it.

whats happenong will reduce the hits on your site.

FIX IT!! THERE ARE WAYS!
