Published Date: 20 August 2008
ALTHOUGH new Hearts signing David Obua will become the first Ugandan to play in the Scottish Premier League, he won't be the first from his own family to star in Edinburgh.
Obua hails from a sporting dynasty, and his father, Denis, was a celebrated left-winger for the Ugandan national team. However, it is his uncle, John Akii-Bua, who made his name on the world stage when winning gold in the 400m hurdles at the Munich Olympics in 1972. This was having only switched to the discipline two years earlier at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

Obua's uncle had been persuaded to make the change from shorter distances by renowned British athletics coach Malcolm Arnold. He finished fourth in Edinburgh and over the next 24 months undertook an intense training regime as he prepared for an event known as the Man-Killer. It worked.

At Munich he became the first African to win gold in an event under 800 metres, and did so in a world record time from the inside lane. His story is also remarkable for other reasons, many of them rooted in the brutal regime of Idi Amin, who had seized power in his homeland a year before the Munich Olympics.

Three of Akii-Bua's own brothers were murdered by Amin's troops. Akii-Bua himself was forced to flee for Kenya in 1979. Although he returned to Uganda in 1983, it was not for long. He died 11 years ago at the age of just 51.

A documentary entitled The John Akii-Bua Story: An African Legend was shown as recently as two weekends ago on BBC2. Revelations included the fact Akii-Bua was one of 43 children. He also apparently drank a bottle of champagne on the night before his Munich triumph, in order to help him sleep.

Obua has a lot to live up to as he contemplates life in Edinburgh, though on the other side of a city where his uncle's journey to Olympic gold began. "It's nice to finally be here," the 24-year-old said yesterday.

Circumstances have deposited Akii-Bua's nephew in Edinburgh, with the most significant of these being Hearts' recruitment of former Uganda coach Csaba Laszlo in July. Among his first targets was to tie up the signing of Obua, who once scored a hat-trick for him in an African Nations match against Niger. Work permit problems meant this could not be concluded until earlier this month. His current lack of fitness means there will be another delay before the Hearts fans see him in first-team action.

Obua's tall, wiry frame makes it possible to see the link with one of the greatest African athletes of all time. His own story perhaps lacks some of the power of his uncle's, but is also not straightforward.

Obua spent five years on a football scholarship in North Carolina. His progress was blighted by what were described as "disciplinary problems". This trait, at a one-to-one level, is impossible to detect, although the softly-spoken Ugandan clearly possesses a steely determination to better himself. He has signed a four-year contract with Hearts, and hopes to continue learning his trade in Scotland. He is prepared to play anywhere on the left, but prefers the role behind a principal striker.

Obua's level-headedness is highlighted by a decision to turn down the offer of a contract with West Ham, where he went on trial earlier this summer. He also had the chance to sign for Serie A club Chievo.

"I'm not in a hurry," he said. "I have to progress, slowly but surely. I thought if I went to West Ham or Chievo it would have taken me a long time to adapt. I'm here with a coach I know, and it will help me grow as a player before I go to something bigger."

This is something which his uncle might have said as he ran up hills in a weighted vest, part of an extreme training programme devised by his mentor, Arnold. Obua hopes his own guru will guide him to success.

"I had an idea when Csaba became manager here I might end up here," he said. "I have played for him for more than two years now and he has got the best out of me. When I play for him, I play with my heart."

• Hearts have announced that former sporting director Alex Koslovski has left the club. He has been at Tynecastle as "sport director" since 2006, and often helped translate during press conferences.

Im looking forward to seeing this lad play as he must have something about him for West Ham and Chievo to want him. I dont think he will get Andy Driver's position in the first team though and left back is what he will be used for.

More drivel from the Rankers fans again I see. This site was a bit of a laugh before now its becomming more and more tedious.

That is a position he could walk straight into come Saturday

#9 huggs, i would go for that as well. his goal scoring record suggests he has a fair idea where the net is and how to put the ball into it. a skill which hasn't always been so common around these parts.

he will win his fair share of high balls too.

mon the obua, mon the hearts.

Bring Them On: not much of a story? A Scottish team signs the nephew of an Olympic champion?

Nah, can;t see any story there, what with this being the start of the football season and bang in the middle of the Olympics.

What you meant to say is that it is not a story of Hearts in Crisis, right? A story you can bore us rigid all day with your alter ego, Slumtit.

Looking forward to a feature on YOUR dad, mind.....

10 Vic I hope he is ready to start there on Saturday in behind Mole
Still dont think Mole is really ready yet but what an improvement in a player Nade only fit for half an hour so we are not spoilt for choice
Is Tullberg fit?
7

Glorious Hearts,

20/08/2008 08:42:40
Despite people saying Obua was bought as a left back I assumed we'd see him as an attacking midfielder behind a main striker. Everything points to him being an exciting signing and I have high hopes for him.

As VI of G said, mon the Obua, mon the Hearts!
8

Who?,

20/08/2008 09:00:55
I doubt he will be played behind the striker- thats where audry plays and i really doubt now that vlad is back to his old tricks any lith will be dropped.

I would play Obua on the left and driver on the right, that would give hearts quite a bit of pace on the wings. If Csaba could find a nippy striker to play off Tillburg and a box to box midfielder then the offensive unit of the team could be quite something.

#11 irk, if it's not about rioters it's not worth reading. doesn't stop the tube dribbling on the comments section, unfortunately.

#12 huggs, i would doubt tullberg is fit to play 90, we might not even see him at all, which is probably no bad thing because i don't see any point risking a more serious injury by bringing him in too soon. i do agree about mole, he's showing real signs of improvement. by no means the finished article yet but the lad is a work in progress.

mon the obua, mon the mole, mon the tullberg, mon aw the rest o thum.

Good morning fellow Hearts fans.
I watched the full 90mins of the rangers game on TV yesterday, and we sure needd to change the front TWO.
Audrey was hopeless and Jamie Mole is not good enough.
Obua is a stranger to me, so I am hoping that he is a "find". Right now, Hearts look reasonable in all departments except those mentioned above.
One other slight worry for me, is the very poor workrate from Larry.I hope Laszlo can rectify that, because Miko ain't the solution to any problems on the right side.

#20 morning scorchio, we could also do with seeing a return to the team of jonsson or palazuelos, maybe even the mythical, lesser spotted aguiar.

we can only p*** with the custard cannon we've got regarding RM. kingston, miko, chesney are all prone to bouts of lethargy. i agree that csaba has to motivate kingston. towards the end of last season he was showing signs of having 'billy-big-shot' syndrome.

kick some ass csaba.

21

#13 You're absolutely right and any player who can score a hattrick at international level must have something going for him. Not many goals around in international matches these days so for one player to score three himself is promising and I hope we don't lose this goal potential by playing him further back.

#1-5 - my old granny always used to say "If you can't think of anything sensible to say then keep quiet". Good advice.
22

victorian of gorgie ,

20/08/2008 09:37:53
#25 huggs, maybe not a bad shout to put him into the ksanavicius place. as you suggest, he wouldn't have tracking back duties and someone else could come in that would work back.

if we do that then i would go for the following across the midfield:

kingston
obua stewart palazuelos driver

23

huggs,

20/08/2008 09:41:51
28 Vic What about Karapidis ?
Drop him or Zaliukis?

#26- i've had a ST @ hearts for 12 years (when the vast majority didn't want to know) and watched some very good teams and some very poor teams- but i still renewed by ST every year.

I've stood/ sat at both home and way games with my late grandfather, father and now my son, so i don't feel i need to justify my credentials to sombody who probably drinks in either robertsons or the tynecastle arms- two establishments which are frequented by the scum element of the support (i've heard the songs and seen the behaviour).

Thats four generations of my family who love the club and as long as vlad is kept under control even more generations will do so.

So why don't you run a long and stop acting like a T1T!

I would like to see Obua replace Audrey in the lineup and to get the most out of Kingston we should be playing him in the middle of the park. Kingston is too slow to be a winger and is an extravagance we can ill afford... his backtracking is woeful.

I did think that Obua would be our new left back but he may actually be better playing behind our 'lone' striker whoever that will be?!

My team would be (assuming we are playing Csaba's favoured 4-5-1)

Macdonald (Kello)

Nielson (Thomson)
Karipidis (Zaliukas)
Berra (Rapnik)
Wallace (New signing?!)

Beslija (We may never see him fit again, but we can hope!)(Miko)
Kingston (Palazuelos)
Stewart (Jonsson)
Driver (Cesnauskas)

Obua (Nade)

Tullberg (Glen)

In brackets are the cover. This also assumes we aren't going to sign anyone else this season, however I can't think of cover for the left back position.

this is laughable, it seems that there is a misconception that pubs like robbos and the tynie arms are frequented only by "scum" and "trash".

nonsense.

yes there are a few younger guys who drink in robbos who persist with the unwanted songs we know about, but by and large there are some good people in there. as far as i know there is no "scum" element in the tynie arms.

you are quite right, there is no place for that sort of behaviour at hearts or in our pubs for that matter. some of these balloons are hearts fans at heart i believe and they should either shape up or ship out. it's mostly a problem among the younger element therefore i believe they will grow out of the nonsense in time.

Johnny Jambo,

#62 LF - Yes I agree that changes will, and in fact must, be made on a regular basis until Csaba knows what his best team is, I have no issues with that and I agree some changes will be seen as VR interfering and that may be the case, but we will soon know who picks the team over a period of time if we start to se certain players in the side when they are not performing well.

I also agree that St Mirren and teams in the same category, are games Hearts should be winning but we lost that habit over the last 2 seasons and we need to get it back quickly although I think we will not just go out and be automatic winners against these teams we, hopefully, should see an improvement as the season progresses.

It really is difficult to judge the standard of player that we have because of the sub-standard management we have had for a wee while now.
It is good to see the players fighting for the shirt and then you hope that a good manager/coach can instill some discipline and good tactics, hopefully in the attacking sense(my choice).
We have to be patient and let Csaba get on with the job in hand IMO.

61

Johnny Jambo,

20/08/2008 12:00:36
#70 LF yes I agree we need to be patient at the end of the day Csaba has only ben in the job a few weeks, he has appeared quite positive so far, he needs to really assess what he has under competitive conditions and work out his best team. I think the players are not the best we would want but they are what we have, maybe they just need the motivation I don't think they got last season and maybe Csaba is the man to do that and make them better performers.

We can only wait and see.

79 JJ - if he keeps looking so disinterested (Kingston, that is) then he won't get the move he looks like he's after. Don't know what's going on in his head, maybe just needs to play in a different position.

As for Obua, I don't think he's a footballing God, I don't know not having seen him play yet, but he certainly has the potential IF he gets used to the 'slight' difference in climate (!) and IF he doesn't catch Vlad-flu.......

Cheers for the apparently honest and non-baiting post though, much appreciated.

I would like to try Obua as an attaching left back similar to the way Roberto Carlos played for Real Madrid. He looks the type of player that has plenty strength to cope with a role like this. I would also like to try Tullberg along with Nade up front although I dont have that much faith in Nade as a goal scorer.I hope we get back to winning on Sat as we cannot let the O.F. get to many points infront of us.I would like to point out that having been a Hearts fan for more than 50 years I paid to watch the Rangers V Hearts game on the Hearts TV as they advertised it would be shown in Spain. Went to watch, but only comentary as it wasnt shown in this area what a CON. E Mailled Hearts 3 times but never received any responce from customer services.

#87. Yes, but unfortunately for us the rest of our team is not as good as Real Madrid or Brazil so I suspect if Obua was trying to get forward too much, we would get papped.
