THIS weekend sees the spring conference of the SNP, in Edinburgh. The event is likely to be a rally celebrating a year in power at Holyrood. As an SNP member (and candidate) I will mark the moment with the best of them. Yet every so often, I get a political itch: now that the SNP is in government, what remains of the independence goal?
Yes, Alex Salmond is determined to hold a referendum. But the unionist parties, with their majority at Holyrood, are reluctant to let him. They assume they would win such a referendum, but (in their analysis) that would merely deprive the SNP of its...

Talking about a federal solution:- "England does not break down into natural units, . . ."

So why not treat it as one region until some parts of it want a separate identity.

Although I do not think federalism is a practical solution, because of Londonopolis egocentricity.

Could the Scottish Government hold an advisory plebiscite (vote) on the new Lisbon Treaty in Scotland ?
The Green and Conservative MSPs would give their support because they must surely follow their public policy and help make it happen.

#3 bill-alba:I wonder why the Scottish Tories don't go down that road.
David Cameron - The Tories would hold a referendum on the EU treaty, if they won power before it was ratified by all EU states.
He said a referendum could take place "absolutely no problem at all" while it was still being discussed in Europe. But he admitted it was more difficult if there was no general election until 2010 and if all member states had ratified it without holding a referendum.
"We will not be content to rest at that point because we think too much power will have been passed from Westminster to Brussels," he said.

A few oil workers obsession with pensions might lose Scotland another entire industry, oil processing. Sure some say this won't happen, but it has happened in the past, too many times to take the risk. Yet a few are changing ahead running straight for the brick wall. Great.

The same is true for independence. Obsession with one issue, separation threatens to lose even more industries. Scotland and the UK are more complex than this simple politics assumes. After all not everybody earns their income on the basis of legal fees. Some people trade for a living.
