COATBRIDGE'S Clare Queen enjoyed her best start to a tournament this season with a five-birdie 69 in the first round of the Nykredit Masters in Denmark, writes Elspeth Burnside.
The 25-year-old was in joint fifth place and just three strokes behind the German leader, Martina Eberl.

Eberl had a fantastic back nine of 32. She birdied the 12th hole and then made five in a row from the 14th to the final hole. England's Melissa Reid was alone in second on 67 and Australia's Nikki Garrett and German Denise-Charlotte Becker shared third on 68.

Queen opened with a birdie at the first hole, added another at the third and then finished with a flourish by picking up shots at the 15th, 17th and 18th. Her only error was a bogey at the 14th. Queen has had one top-ten finish this season – at the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies' Scottish Open at the Carrick in May – and is currently lying 44th on the LET Order of Merit.

Dunblane's Lynn Kenny filed a level-par 73, while rookie Jenna Wilson from Strathaven, the third Scot in the field, had a 74.

Annika Sorenstam, making her final appearance in Europe before she quits at the end of the year, had a 71.
