Mileson 'ego' to blame, says Saints chief Brown

GEOFF Brown yesterday blamed a Brooks Mileson "ego trip" for Gretna's grief.
The St Johnstone chairman admitted that he sympathises with the health worries which have troubled the former benefactor of the Raydale Park club.

However, Brown is adamant that doesn't let Mileson off the hook for pushing the club to extinctio
n.

Brown was on the receiving end of flak from Gretna management and players last summer for stating they weren't wanted by the SPL.

His detractors claimed it was down to sour grapes and envy after the Perth club was pipped to promotion on a frantic final day.

But Brown said: "They talked about Living the Dream and some people bought into it while Gretna were promoted, reached the (Scottish] cup final and qualified for Europe. But there was always going to be a day of reckoning.

"When Gretna beat us to the title last year I was painted as the bad guy for saying in public what SPL chairman were saying in private. But why pull the wool over fans' eyes?

"I was seen as the baddie and critics said it was down to envy. But no one in my time at St Johnstone has gone unpaid if we owe money.

"No one wanted them in the SPL – and no wonder given what followed. It has been a mess. As far as I'm concerned people were misled by an ego-tripper who was looking after number one.

"The debts have stacked up and some very good people could be facing financial ruin. How many of Gretna's creditors are ordinary folk who have been taken to the cleaners?

"That really infuriates me. They have been taken for a ride. And it seems to happen time after time in football.

"There's a credibility issue for Scottish football and I remember Fergus McCann in his time at Celtic saying clubs should have a business plan and financial statements in place to see them through the following season. That way the league could be assured the fixtures would be fulfilled.

"We have had to wait for so-called Gretna rescue plans to run their course but they were never going to stack up. How could a place no bigger than Brechin operate a full-time football club with a £40,000-a-week wage bill?

"Now we have Ross County and Airdrie United coming into the First Division. They might not bring many fans to away games but they've got to be better than Gretna."

#1 Not really, plenty of people were saying it would end in tears. Didn't take a genius to see that without their sugar daddy they weren't viable, and that they were screwed if anything happened to him.

Sadly this is not a case of being wise after the event.
And, despite Mark McGhee taking extreme care not to burn bridges at Tynecastle, Hearts are now in as much of a precarious position with their owner.
Everybody with a brain knows that no Scottish football club outside the Old Firm generates enough income to run up the debts Gretna and Hearts have done.
Brown is on the money, nuff said.

Never knew this idiot Milestone was also the owner of Scarborough till yesterday. He sold out in 20001 after screwing them up and relegating them from the English top leagues.
Romanov is on track at Tynecastle to do the same to Hearts.

Another frightening statistic is that Hearts could only beat them once.Last game of season was a victory for Gretna. What a shambles at Tynecastle yet the day dream believers still think Romanov is the man. What a deluded bunch they are.

Well I have just posted on the other Gretna story. I agree entirely with Geoff Brown. Most people I spoke to predicted this outcome so it is no surprise. It`s about time the criteria to be a member of our top league is stated and applied firmly and not bent to suit at the end of each season. Organisations including football clube need to be seen to be built on sound foundations not on a bed of sand.

Look at all the FFHobos and sad losers who just have to get in a dig at Edinburghs bigger team.

Fact is Hearts are a ancient historic and oved institution and have the fan base to ensure survival, Gretna are not in the same league.

Did none of you Leitheopian Accounts read the story about Hearts "Debt" being reduced to < £30 million - of course not , why would you recall anything remotley positive about us?

I would never wish Hibs out of existance, shame none of you Hobos have as much class.

A big well done to Geoff Brown for coming out and saying what Chick Young, Richard Gordon, Hugh Keevins, or any other football journalist have failed to do and criticise, question, and scrutinise, this Walter Mitty that is Brooks Mileson.

These media darlings obviously must be embarrassed since they all swallowed the hype and bought into the 'fairytale' stuff.

Brooks Mileson was ill. But not that ill, surely, that in all these past months he could not have written a cheque or transferred some funds electronically to keep the club afloat, keep people in a job, and save us all the embarrassment of having one of our SPL clubs from going to the wall.

#11 "Fact is Hearts are a ancient historic and oved institution and have the fan base to ensure survival,"

Perhaps not ensure survival but certainly a big enough fan base to resurrect the club. I'm not going to quote debt figures or such like as I don't have any facts but if I were a Hearts fan I would find it worrying that the future of the club is basically in the hands of one man. I know Hearts fans who do feel that way and they have real concerns about the future. They do admit though that their biggest concern is that nobody outside the Romanov family really knows the state of Hearts finances and just what would happen if Vlad were decide to walk away.

Brown is spot on here.

But then the debate comes full circle to the subject of Hearts financial predicament.

Tick Tock etc etc etc.

How very boring indeed.

Get a life guys. Or better still focus on your own team.

#18 - yes of course Hearts fans have some concerns over their club, however at the end of the day we are not the only club with a debt so I would think we have no more concerns than many other clubs.

Chelsea Fans, should they have concerns for example.

#20, well perhaps Chelsea fans should be a little concerned given that their owner apparently likes to 'help' pick the team. The problem with Vlad is that some of the stories and allegations that have come out of Tynecastle have done him no good whatsoever. Yes it's the case that most clubs are in the situation where one man is the majority shareholder but none of them seem to attract bad publicity with the same frequency as Vlad does. Maybe the press just see him as an easy target of course but either way over the last couple of years Hearts in the main have been in the news for the wrong reasons and responsibility for that rests with Vlad. The way his son addressed questions put him at the AGM leaves a lot to be desired as well!
22

Johnny Jambo,

04/06/2008 12:00:41
#22 I cannot disagree with anything you say, I am not happy with some of what Vlad says, or how he conducts himself sometimes, also with his interference in team matters and other areas and I think many Jambo's feel the same.

However those are issues aside from the Financial structure of the club and the longterm security of HMFC.
I was one who had a great fear for the future of the club at one time, but now I feel a little more confident because I see what he is doing, which is the same as any business which has a financial difficuty, he his cost cutting and trying to bring in cash so we have, at least for the meantime become a selling club and whilst I know this is not what we would have hoped, he is starting to get good money for some player which we may consider to be not much more than average so that all augers well for the financial status.
23

Iain Bhern,

04/06/2008 12:47:24
#23, so would you say that he will pursue a policy of financial prudence along the Rod Petrie template but perhaps not so stringently? Certainly cutting the overheads will be a massive step in the right direction. Despite the views expressed by some Hibees I have no desire to see Hearts disappear. My father was a Hearts supporter as is my son. My late brother and I chose the path of enlightenment, or so I like to think anyway :o)

I'm not going to go into Hearts finances simply because I don't have facts to base a discussion on but I will say this. There has been much talk of where the Craig Gordon money has gone. I know for certain where some of it is. It's in the hands of H.M. Government. When a club sell a player they are selling an asset and the proceeds of the sale are subject to capital gains tax. No idea what the percentage is but that's where some of the money is along with a percentage of any other transfer income.

Debt only £30m! As it's only 2-3 times annual turnover and the Club continues to make operating losses every year then that's allright then....
My guess is you are not the FD of any recognisable business.
