BANKING giant HBOS has extended its sponsorship of the project to create a business improvement district (Bid) in Edinburgh city centre.
Described as a residents' association for businesses, the concept of Bids originated in North America, but they have since spread to other parts of the world, and a number have been voted for in Scotland.

Schemes are financed through a levy on businesses within a defined area, topped up by additional private and public-sector funding.

The level of support being offered to the Edinburgh Bid by HBOS, which first provided financial backing in April 2007, has not been disclosed.

The ballot for the Edinburgh vote opened on 11 April this year and runs until 23 May. The Bid is being delivered by Edinburgh City Centre Management.
