HBoS sheds 650 jobs

UP to 650 jobs are being cut at Halifax Bank of Scotland as part of plans to merge two of its business banking divisions, it was announced today.
The Edinburgh-based bank - Britain's fifth largest - said the roles would go across its UK offices over the next 18 months.

It is merging its 1,000-strong Business Banking arm, which sits in the group's retail division, with the group's Commercial
Business in the corporate division to create one single unit focused on small and medium-sized businesses.

HBOS said that alongside the 650 expected job losses, another 350 staff within the enlarged division would be transferred to alternative roles in the group.

The group said it hoped to achieve the reduction in jobs through voluntary redundancies, normal staff turnover and, where possible, further redeployment.

Trade union Unite said it was disappointed at the decision to axe jobs and would be calling for no compulsory redundancies.

Ged Nichols, of HBOS's group union Accord, added: "We are always unhappy at any planned reduction in the roles and opportunities available within HBOS – even when we fully understand what the business believes to be the commercial need for the changes.

"We will work hard with HBOS and Unite and do our best to ensure that alternative roles can be found for those union members who want to stay in the company."

HBOS said the merger is designed to create "significant synergies", taking out duplication between the two functions.

"The new strategy will further enable HBOS to win selective market share from the 'big four' banks by acquiring more primary relationships from SMEs," it said.

"The single business will have a very clear focus on winning even more deposits from customers."

It's nothing to do with the credit crunch, This is one bank who deserve all they get . I feel sorry for the staff who are losing their jobs but that's karma at work. The bank have been robbing their customers for years I'm not surprised they're now losing out.

It's not an "Edinburgh-based" bank anymore. Any important things get down by Halifax in Leeds. It's based in Leeds!

Service at this bank is appalling and has been since Halifax took over.
A 1000 strong 'business arm'? Where are they? not in any branches - business customers are handed a telephone.
This faceless bank has no interest in or care for small businesses.

Alright talking about HBOS, but RBS ain't much better in fact LTSB and Barclays are not stock market WunderKind just now either. Two for a dozen is possible the best we can hope for.

Let's face it, we're all doomed and there's nothing we can do about it. Right about nowv, we should start seeing people jumping out of tall buildings in the city and mass suicides in the jungles, ala Jim Jones style... and about time too. Give the lizards another chance to rule the world, the humans have had their turn.

#1 I agree wholeheartedly with your statement. This bunch of highway men deserve all they get. Ever since the Halifax got involved the service and abilities of this organisation have floundered. Good ridance, although i'm sorry for the employees loosing their jobs. Well some of them anyway!!

#2 and #6. The corporate HQ is in Edinburgh. I think that still counts for a lot. Halifax didn't get 'involved' - it was a merger, a move which put the BOS into the top league of world banks.

I'm with HBOS.

Like all banks they overcharge and penny pinch wherever possible...however... comparing them to the bank I use here in Poland (ING - of Holland),I can't complain.

Speculate to accumulate ...(then once you've accumulated enough, you can shed the excess resources that you used to accumulate). Business is business!

I think they're the best of a bad bunch - but I don't really know enough about other banks. I've been with BoS since my first savings book opened via the banks visit to my primary school, 16 years ago.

Get 'em while their young!!!

I think managers who use the word "synergies" when they mean "sacking people" should be first out the door.

If this recession is to do any good at all, we should make a bonfire of inanities.

We need at least one new bank in Scotland.

I'm discussed by this. Not only are they contributing to higher levels of unemployment.

The Bank of Scotland was a decent bank before they merged with the Halifax.

I think it would be better if they would spearate as a Bank of Scotland customer I've never been happy with the merger. I belive the HBOS is incompatent.

What about the notes?

One good thing about this is may be some one could start up a true Bank of Scotland.

"The new strategy will further enable HBOS to win selective market share from the 'big four' banks by acquiring more primary relationships from SMEs," it said.

Oh dear if they do this they've lost my custom!!!! And other people who've refused to change their accounts from being Bank of Scotland to Halifax. During their years of being merged.

I hope the woman who works in the Sauchiehall St branch who refused me a loan last year on the grounds that I refused their rip off insurance policy is one of them sacked even though my credit history was 100% fine.

I agree with No.1.

Vowed never to enter another HBOS branch ever again after fiasco in 2005. Went in after checking out their products online and knew exactly what I wanted. Just asked to see someone about opening new acct and conversation went something like this…

I’d like to open a new acct
Sorry sir everyone busy
I know what I want just need to go through it and process paperwork
Sorry sir all busy
Ok I need to get some shopping anyway so can come back later – when would suit?
Can’t say – everyone’s busy at the moment
Just give me an indication then…1 hour or 2
Really don’t know
Me – after some head scratching….hmmmm ok then not be seeing you again

Even worse when you consider I was working for a bank down south at the time and had told them that too. What better proof of id etc… can you have!

They called me later and said may consider processing acct application but would need to book an appointment and bring in 3m of statements etc…..Ha Ha I don’t think so. Had already opened acct with Lloyds TSB who handled it by saying – certainly sir, would you like a coffee while we just run through the paperwork. Been with them since then and very happy. Not perfect but are very good.
