Hamilton 3-1 Dundee Utd: Hamilton hammer out warning

Stevenson (29) McArthur 39) Graham (63)
DUNDEE UTD 1
McLaughlin (23 og)
HAMILTON last night raised a title flag and then issued a warning to those who believe the club's SPL stay will prove as temporary as the hastily-erected stand which sits on their stadium's far touchline. Twenty years on from their last victory in Scotland's top league – also against Dundee United – came another, more glorious triumph.

Hamilton simply started where they left off last season, and trashed the notion that their dominant home form had been due to their synthetic surface. This was an authentic dismantling of a side expected to ride high in the league this season. There were no artificial properties at work here – only old-fashioned work ethic and, for those who paid little attention to the team's progress last season, a perhaps surprising level of skill. These qualities helped the home side overcome the loss of an opening goal after just 23 minutes when Mark McLaughlin headed into his own net, although the defender made up for this by scoring his side's second, with help from James McArthur. This strike was bookended by goals from Tony Stevenson and David Graham.

It was a case of better late than never as Hamilton returned to a league they last graced in 1989. An even longer wait was necessary due to the demands of television, with both teams knowing that a two-goal victory would lift them to the top of the SPL after weekend results. Hamilton bettered Inverness Caledonian Thistle's result against Aberdeen by dint of scoring more goals, and can today look down on every other club in Scotland.

Although they lost the opening goal Hamilton's half-time lead reflected the balance of play in the first-half, and demonstrated just how difficult a trip to New Douglas Park will prove this season. Energy and desire was married to no little skill. Just as these qualities frustrated rival teams in the First Division last season so they will again combine to test more talented opponents during the coming campaign. Hearts are the next to visit here in the league, and will do so with some trepidation. Despite the lengthy exile from the top league Hamilton displayed few nerves, with their front pairing of Richard Offiong and Graham providing the United defence with a stern test.

Graham was first to show, turning United left-back Danny Grainger with ease and shooting high towards the near corner of the United net. Lukasz Zaluska was its match, and the United keeper had to be alert once more at his near post after Offiong robbed Lee Wilkie. He later surpassed these stops with a brilliant block on his line from a Chris Swailes header.

United were learning all about this fortress they call New Douglas Park. Hamilton did not lose a single home match in the league last season, and conceded only three goals. Critics argued about the advantage provided by the artificial turf. This, however, is no longer a factor, with Hamilton – in keeping with SPL rules – having replaced the old surface with grass so lush it might have been borrowed from the front of the White House. Indeed, if anything, it seemed too long. Underfoot conditions were not a consideration when United took a 23rd minute lead, however. The away side had provoked danger already from balls fired in from the left wing, and Willo Flood provided another. It was aimed at Warren Feeney but found instead McLaughlin. The consequence was no less desirable as far as United were concerned, with the centre-back heading the ball past his own goalkeeper.

However, the hosts equalised 13 minutes later, and it was a goal their efforts had merited. Tony Stevenson claimed their historic maiden SPL strike from a free-kick just outside the United box, and after a foul on James McCarthy. The right-back stepped up and took advantage of a poorly-organised wall. Zaluska, too, will be distressed at his positioning.

There was even more for Hamilton to cheer when they claimed the lead after 39 minutes. This time Stevenson was the architect, again from a free-kick. McLaughlin redeemed himself by managing to climb above Darren Dods and planted a header back towards goal. The eager McArthur might have touched the ball as it made its way into the net but McLaughlin's need to claim it was greater, as was his contribution.

Craig Levein responded by replacing Prince Buaben with playmaker Danny Swanson at half-time. He also made his way to the dug-out from his seat in the stand and urged his United players on.

But it was Hamilton who looked to exert a stranglehold as the second-half wore on, and managed to claim a third goal in the 63rd minute. Offiong slipped when about to shoot on the edge of the United box, but, as the away defence remained static, Graham took over from his team-mate and rifled a low shot into the net.

We were woeful, absolutely woeful. Gomis put in his worst shift in tangerine, Dods's time is up and Feeney looks like a workhorse. Sandaza and Swanson to start v Celtic please. Can only presume we can't play as badly two games on the trot (please).

Congrats to Hamilton though, bar James McCarthy - diving was an absolute joke, esp considering that I didn't see anything to make me weep for the fact he's now Irish. McArthur's post match interview was good crack though - not his fault the ref can't see a handball, to be fair.

Just as SPL teams get stronger Rearangers punt their most prized asset, and get dumped out of Europe. Unles Wally & Sally have a couple of good signings coming in, can any true RFC fan see you making second place, even Hamilton will give Rearangers a tough go.

Now I understand why he did not get a CL game.

wee story of the night-was so lookin forward to watching billy reids hamilton, brilliant, they didnt let anyone done, what a game, wish they could fill that wee ground though!well done accies.

big story of the night-gutted, sick, angry, ragin, upset, sad, AGAIN!! AGAIN!! after kaunas, liverpool, manchester, losing league, 4-5-1, christian dailly, lee mcculloch, charlie adam, AGAIN SDM and Walter manages to destroy fans hopes with the sale of our best defender and most consistant player(sound like anyone??? yes Mr Hutton), although weve just been bumped a cracker...£8m...no way, if Mr Bain agreed to that clause he should be hounded out with pennypincher Murray, its a disgrace.Celtic fans imagine Liewell sold Mcgready for £6m would you be happy? or sold Naka for £1m? would you be happy? and be knocked out of europe by a pub team, would ye be happy? would you like to play 4-5-1 anti-football? do you want dailly or mcculloch? its pathetic, im on a rant here, but im right, its shocking!where do we go from here? i know ive just wrote a big speal, but im lost for words!!

Chazbud: Sorry to say you are right, as a Celtic fan although it seems funny real its not, remember all us Celtic fans went off in a rant during the Kelly years and McCann, but it does get better, best thing to happen even though you don't want it, is get humped by Celtic in 3 weeks, then fans demand removal of certain people.

We don't want you to go out of business, we would have no one to hate/fight. Maybe you will bring in something good with the 8 mil.

#9 cheers, i doubt it, smiths scouts have found him dailly, mcculloch and beasley, if his signing policy is anythign to go by, we should be very worries, couple of weeks left, who wants to go to a scottish team with no european football in offer? the old firm are attractive but not THAT attractive.

ps its not only that £8m we have, we have millions left in budget from last seasons profits.celtic fans love to think were skint and we like letting them think that but we will be ok, i think , i just want rid of a good few imposters in our squad first before we bring in davis, healy, barone, karagounis and alan smith!lol

dont want to lose to celtic in 3 weeks, but if hearts humpp us at ibrox...mmmm....there could be trouble ahead, csaba has them playing fast attacking football, not the kind of football we like to play against!

there was a point when PLG was in charge that i wanted us to lose just to get rid of him, terrible thing to say but things were that bad, its not much better!
11

Finnharp,

#10, if you have as much as you say then why dump the only decent player on offer. Without BF and no Cuellar things will be bad, I watched the rangers game on Saturday and you were woeful (same as celtic yesterday), only difference is we have a bit of quality whether you like it or not, RFC look like going bacwards. 4-0 Celtic Rangers game.

Morning Lads...Great news story on the BBC..

Scientists in the US say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people invisible.

Researchers at the University of California in Berkeley have developed a material that can bend light around 3D objects making them "disappear".

The materials do not occur naturally but have been created on a nano scale, measured in billionths of a metre.

The team says the principles could one day be scaled up to make invisibility cloaks large enough to hide people.

The first practical application for this technique was unveiled at Ibrox, the home of Glasgow Rangers Football Club. The Clubs'Central Defender, Carlos Cuellar, was used in the experiment to show how "Invisibility" could be achieved....

Firstly,The club issued a statement that the player had invoked a clause in his contract,a large cheque was waved and "POOF!" he was gone...David Edgar of the Rangers Supporters Trust was on hand to comment.."Wan minute he wiz there, nixt minute,he wiz awa'"

The next "Disappearing" act will be that of arch rivals Glasgow Celtic as they disappear over the hill on the road to four titles in succession..

Sir David Murray was not available for comment....

The prob for the 'gers is that there aren't that many players on staff at present who can lift the team...A couple of largeish signings from Wattie or its "the games a bogey" time,I fear

#18 - My contention with Cuellar sale is not that he's "irreplaceable" but that they reiterated that he definitely wouldn't be sold only last Friday when he evidently had a clause. Not all the support are spectacularly thick and see right through Baldy Bains smoke and mirrors guff.

You're correct about present staff but i couldn't care less about largeish signings as

a) Anyone topnotch ain't going to come - even yourselves with guaranteed Champions league have only attracted the Bangkok chick boy and mcCourt who seems to have scuttled back to his park bench & buckie

&

b)He should be thinking about building a team irrespective of names and look at pace above all else - look at Wenger at Arsenal. Our better players (sic) Thomson & Ferguson are only at Ibrox as they haven't the pace to make it at the highest level down south.

Smith looks to me like he's sleepwalking and if we get skelped at Meccano land he'll fall on his sword leaving Swally to lose even more hair.

#20 - Lack of ambition is not the problem - forget about signing £5 million or so valued players. The Premiership has forever decimated changed that - Andy Johnson for £12 million says it all. It'll only change when the Yankee Doodles, Oligarchs and Arabs find something else to spend their squillions on.

We spent about £8-10 mill this summer (Lafferty, Miller, Velicka & Bougherra) and we'd have bought only Velicka and used the rest on genuine wide players, not wingers, we wouldn't be in the utter clag we are now. Hutton was our most effective attacker and was replaced with Broadfoot - whos' game but at the end of the day is a free from St.Mirren

And yes it does hurt

#22 your right, but why do celt*c have vennegoor, nakamura, donati, gravesen, mcgready, balde, borat, scott brown, ALL BIG BIG players for them and we have dailly, mcculloch and adam? thats my problem, i dont want to spend like advocaat, i want GOOD scouting, i want young enthusiastic, fast players who can pass between each other and score goals, were so flat its not true.i think laffs, boughy and velicka will do good, but 2m on stinker miller, hes rotten, just not good enough, but theres a few of them in the squad.and hutton was our most effective/creative player(a right back!!)we sold him and lost the quad, dont care what anyone says.

Could be a good deal for Rangers financially, but that remains to be seen when the final details are revealed.

If Villa have agreed to pay £7.8m AND the dental bills, it could be a shrewd piece of business for Rangers.

On a serious note, Scotsman not allowing comment on it? Not embarrassed are they after being so gullible to print the guff they were fed by Rangers last week that their "best players would not be sold" following the CL exit?

Now they say it was the player who invoked the clause. Yeah sure. Wattie has been openly touting for buyers since a week past Tuesday. Only hours after the meeting with the supporters trust at which they stated the best players were staying, he announced to the press that if a decent offer came in they would need to consider it. In other words "come and get Carlos". Now he says the player asked to be released on Sunday. (Anyone want to buy some magic beans?)

Still, they have no problem now paying the £3.5m or whatever for Davis now. Have they?

Message for Mot Juste. Can you bring the Hutton bus around to the front door please?

Good bit of business getting 10million euros for a centre back.
We've got Dailly and Weir anyway.
It was a cert he was going. Not using him against Kaunas gave it away and Wattie going on and on about how we don't want to sell him, but might have to.

Great result for Hamilton. They'll cause a few shocks this season and are certs to stay up i reckon.

As for the Cuellar transfer. I saw this coming even BEFORE the Kaunas debacle. As soon as we signed Bougherra i said he would be off, could see the reasoning if we used the money properly and asked just for a bit of honesty from Smith and Co.

Bougherra and another should be a good enough center defence to cope with the SPL and a couple of good midfielders will have us challenging a Celtc team which lets face it, aint no great shakes either.

Make no mistake though, this transfer has been in the pipeline for a while and the fans will be rightly raging at the way we are having the wool pulled.

A couple of bad results will see Smiths jaiket on a shoogly peg. Personally im willing to wait and see who he brings and how he has us playing before making further judgement but at the moment it aint looking good.

If we spend the money on the team then no problem.
10 million for 1 player is good business.
It's not a case of having the wool pulled over our eyes...I wish that was the case.
Unfortunately SDM and Sir Wattie are not very good liars.
Rangers fans have the advantage of being intelligent which makes the b'llsh't spouted on Friday a bit hard to take.
If Murray coughes another 10 million before the transfer window closes and wattie spends it wisely, then forgiveness may be at hand.
The annoying thing is that celtic should be kicking on and taking advantage but they're not.....and yet Rangers are still sitting back..???

Funny how Cuellar never played after the raith rovers game and all of a sudden is transferred. Walter said we played not bad on saturday, if he thinks that he is on a different planet. We should have been signing midfielders but he signed a defender. Now it all becomes clear. He is treating the rangers supporters like idiots and has a hidden agenda. He has sold because he needs the money to go out and buy and he just would not admit to this.
If we start dropping points then we really will have problems and end up letting a very ordinary cellic win the league again as they have done for the last 3 seasons.
The vary least we can ask that Rangers Fc are honest with the supporters.

Rangers used the £9 from the Hutton sale to strengthen the squad this season (Miller, Lafferty & Bougherra) and what happened? Dumped out of Europe at the first hurdle by a Lithuanian pub team (Rangers' fans description, not mine). The £10m that Rangers expected to earn from a CL place this season is not a transfer chest, it's essential operating money for a club like Rangers FC. Don't expect the Cuellar money to be reinvested in new players.

#56 & #70 and to anyone else who are still unsure about the "type" who support the mighty Glasgow Rangers, here is an insight for you. Have to say, Im not surprised. No doubt Bain will be in the press claiming that these are not real supporters!!! HA HA HA!

Steven, I like a laugh and a gloat at Rangers whenever the opportunity presents itself, but I tend to avoid trying to take the moral high ground on these types of issues. I always feel, that while generally our own behaviour is good, we are only ever 1 drink fuelled night away from all the good work coming unstuck. So, feel proud of our own support (or most of them) but don't ever bet on us not ending up on the end of some bad publicity at some point in the future.

Pretty sure 99% of Rangers/Hearts fans are the same as our own. Out to see their team do well and not interested in the drugs/fighting nonsense. But every now and gain the unsavoury element just have to grab the headlines. Anyway, when such an incident occurs, it reflects badly on Scotland and not just the team involved.

Hail hail

While the "type" that support eltc are obviously all like the fan who was jailed in Spain recently for glassing 2 guys.

Grow up and stick to football, its idiots like you who start it all off and get the threads closed.

You've given a good insight into the "type" of person you are by using this as point scoring despite having plenty of football related stuff.

76 - I think the phrase is "a small minority". Aye, right Bain, whatever.

I can see them now getting angrier and angrier as Murray offloads their best players - anything to get a few quid in, and keep the bailiffs from the door.

We have to look positive. Apart from Shagg£r in goals theres not many left who would be particularly missed. ;)

I hardly think you lot are in much of a position to gloat though do you? Agents Calderwood and Co are nearly ready to return after completing thier very successfull sabotage mission. ;)

P.S I forgot you lot are a paragon of virtue when it comes to supporters. Your bad element would be just as noticeable as ours if there wasnt a fraction of the support. Think of the trouble in Madrid, that easily would have got further out of hand with the ridiculous numbers that went to Manchester.

How you today mate? I think it was yourself and another Rangers fan (chazbud?) who i had the Cuellar discussion with when Rangers signed Bougherra. I saw it coming then and that was before the Kaunas debacle.

It is the lack of honest communication which will bother fans the most. IF the money is used wisely to strenghthen the midfield then u can see the sense in selling. Bougherra and another will be ok for the SPL.

Thats the big IF though.

Dons Jimmy,

83 - you weren't in Madrid, and you don't know what you are talking about. All we heard about over there was how your gang of filth had smashed up Barcelona - there was bound to be a reaction against the next scots to go there.

Beleive me Jealousy - the whole country knows that your 'fans' are the lowest of the low. You are truly a breed apart.

As for calderwood - fine. take him 'back' (he never worked for your team anyway) - we don't particularly like him anyway - he certainly doesn't have the best interests of AFC at heart.

keep living in moonbeam land - swallow swallow.

JJ I'm grand thank you...Hope you are well too and not too, errm, blue around the gills after yesterdays news..

I see parallels with the Celtic board of old,the "Custodians" of our club feeding us tosh year after year regarding the sale of our best players with no real recourse to challenge those decisions...

If I were a bear I'd be beelin'

thought i'd have a look back in at the thread and quelle surprise taleban out in force with usual "Rangers are universally violent scum and celtic are a bunch of fun loving munchkins". If you can relieve yourself from your green tinged fantasy land why not take a walk round Croy, Coatbridge or better still pop into one of your "irish" funpubs round the Gallowgate wearing a Rangers top and see what happens. Pious, bigoted dhims - my contempt knows no bounds.

Well - here's one for you. If Smith touting Cuellar around in the daily record doesn't ring any alarm bells, perhaps you are as thick as all your wife-beating rfc chums. You are desperaely trying to sell your best players, but Murray/smith won't admit it, and your fans are too thick to see it.

I dont expect you see the irony of preaching about behaviour of another team's fans while using words such as "hate" to describe an entire body of people, the vast majority of which you have never met or came across.

Idiot.

If the money is used to acquire some midfield help it can only be a plus in helping us win the SPL.

If Cuellar did not move in this transfer window I am sure he would have left in January.

we know were selling our best players so what?, we'll still have enough to win the league against a celt*c team who needs intervention from the refs for 3 points.

Dman..I believe that prestidigitatious (I've been waiting years to use this word in a footie context) expert Paul Daniels has made a seven figure bid for the hairpiece worn by Stuart Milne for years...Jimmy Calderwood was extatic at this windfall for Aberdeen F.C. as he was running out of 50 pence peices at the Tanfastic salon in the Granite City...

I remember having the Cuellar discussion when we signed Bougherra. This was always going to happen and especially after the Kaunas debacle.

Im not a happy chappy either but will wait and see who we sign and how we are playing a month from now before i make a final judgement.

I have been experessing concerns over Smith's management for a while now and so far its looking like i was right to.

A humourous diversion to lighten the mood...From the Herald Diary...You fans think you got probs..

Pink Thistle
PARTICK Thistle's new pink away strip has been a big retail success, even though some fans don't think it is macho enough.

This was presumably seized upon by the DJ when Thistle played Airdrie United in deepest Lanarkshire on Saturday, as he played at half-time Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by the Flaming Lips, followed by Pretty in Pink by the Psychedelic Furs.

He then ended his tribute to the visiting Jags with Electric Six's I Wanna Take You To a Gay Bar.

Not the least bit homophobic, we're sure.

OHH! THe BANTER!
