BRECHIN City have been thrown out of this season's Scottish Cup as punishment for fielding two ineligible players in their fourth-round replay against Hamilton.
The Second Division club included Willie Dyer and Michael Paton in their side for Monday's match, which they won 2-1.

However, both players were signed after the first match between the teams, and Scottish Football Association rules stipulate that only players registered prior to the first game in a cup tie are eligible to feature in replays.

The Scottish FA's emergency committee initially fined Brechin £10,000 and ordered the match to be replayed when it emerged Paton should not have played. When the SFA discovered Dyer was also ineligible, a second emergency committee meeting was called for yesterday morning, and First Division leaders Hamilton will now face Aberdeen in the fifth round.

In a statement, the SFA said: "The committee found that Brechin City had breached the cup competition rules by fielding two ineligible players, William Dyer and Michael Paton. As a consequence of this breach, the committee decided that Brechin City be removed from this season's Scottish Cup competition.

"The outcome of today's meeting supersedes the outcome of yesterday's meeting."

Brechin club secretary Angus Fairlie described the SFA's decision as "very unfortunate" for the club. "We're a wee bit disappointed to be thrown out, but we'll take it on the chin and we have to move on now," he said. "It's very unfortunate. I'm really very disappointed."

It is understood that the £10,000 fine still stands, and Brechin, who are part-time, will have to pay up. Fairlie added: "We just have to try to find that money from somewhere."

Hamilton manager Billy Reid admitted this week has been confusing for his players who initially thought they were out of the cup, then began preparing for a replay, and now face a trip to Pittodrie tomorrow.

Reid said: "We came off the Monday result and went into training on Tuesday thinking we had no game on the Saturday.

"Then we found out we were going to play Brechin on Saturday when we were out on the training pitch, and today I told the players about the new change of plan.

"It's been fluctuating in the past few days. But rules are rules, and we've done nothing wrong.

"I've got to look after my club. Without a doubt we're ready to go to Aberdeen, even at short notice.

"We're geared up for that. It's been a big turnaround but we've got to look forward to it now."

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood said: "I am happy the game is on and the great thing is the SFA decided to make a decision quickly.

"It is a shame for Brechin because they are good people and they treat you well whenever you go there. I believe it was an oversight on their part.

"We got the warning last night that something with Brechin might be happening, so there was always a chance they would ask us to play."

Heavy handed punishment for a wee struggling club. Maybe one of the punishments would have sufficed, but not both. Brechin are set to lose a packet by not playing at Aberdeen anyway, but a fine as well, is completely unnessary!

# 2 - Couldn't agree more, you've got to feel a wee bit sorry for Brechin, even if they have made a stupid but unintentional mistake. Only crowd of 600 + at the Accies game.

Moreover, what happens to the £10 K fine money?!? Just helps pay Gordon Smith's immense salary, I suppose??

The real reason for the increase in punishment was not the discovery of a second unregistered player - there were real mitigating circumstances (the fact that the player's registration only lapsed for a few days and the fact that it was Brechin themselves who discovered the error and drew it to the SFA's attention) and also a precedent from the Arbroath game a few years back to say a replay and a fine was still appropriate. But the fact that Aberdeen protested against the original decision because of their fixture problems - directly to Gordon Smith, on heir website and through the media - brought undue influence to bear. Calderwoood's sympathy for Brechin is probably genuine but certain other people at Aberdeen FC are direct responsible for persuading the SFA to throw Brechin out of the cup. Hang your heads in shame Aberdeen.

Another wingeing Dundonian. Come back to the real world son. Im sure Aberdeen protesting on their website forced the SFA's hand, after all we are known to have such influence over SFA policy. Yer off yer heid.

jerrymanders,

Now, where did I put that bit of paper....? 01/02/2008 17:43:55
So wee clubs should get away with more than bigger clubs then? This situation should never arise. Wee clubs don't have many players on their books. How hard is it to keep tabs on the registration of 30 people? Hearts can manage it with hunners!!! (lol)

No 6: No, wee clubs shouldn't get away with more but he precedent was set with the Arbroath incident. The confusion was not with the registration but with the rule, which has changed several times in recent years. Brechin fielded two duly registered players, who would normally have been eligible for a cup tie scheduled on that date, who were not suspended and who were not cup-tied. But they overlooked the fact that the rule is different for replays. Arbroath fielded two suspended players and were not expelled. And Brechin were not being expelled until Aberdeen intervened.

No. 5: Resorting to personal abuse does not make you right. You understate what Aberdeen did in order to pretend it could have no effect.

#4 & 7, Sporting Fan - What garbage!!! Most Aberdeen fans & all at the club feel a genuine sympathy for Brechin as a) the small club, b) the east coast & relatively local club c) Let's be honest, & no disrespect to Brechin City, they would have been a more "favourable" home draw than Accies who are high flying in the promotion race for the SPL.

Besides, AFC did NOT protest in any, but merely made commented on a fixture pile up.

Get a grip.
