Published Date: 26 January 2008
THE rate of alcohol-related deaths in Scotland is rising – and is more than double the rate for the UK as a whole, figures out yesterday showed.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that in 2006, there were 13.4 deaths per 100,000 people linked to alcohol in the UK – up from 12.9 the previous year.

The General Register Office for Scotland revealed that the equivalent rate north of the border was 27.3 deaths, up from 26.7 the previous year.

This is despite the fact that research earlier this week suggested Scots drink the least in the UK. Campaigners said the figures revealed a "disturbing" upward trend.

Overall in the UK, there were 8,758 alcohol-related deaths in 2006, with 1,546 in Scotland.

The biggest increase was seen in men aged 35 to 54 and overall, men accounted for two-thirds of alcohol-related deaths.

Frank Soodeen, from Alcohol Concern, said: "It appears that for certain younger people who've been drinking heavily for most of their lives, the consequences are beginning to show themselves at ever earlier stages."

Its all very sad!

Do you think its because the, "Scots" are depressed and also as a nation,?, that they turn to the "alcohol".?

That's the second scaremongering story on this topic this week. Wonder how many we'll get next week?

I am 'depressed' this-morning, so I am having a 'Drink'
In-fact I have been, 'depressed' all Day!, but never,
'Touch -a-Drop'..'ever', through the day!...
(even if on holiday)
I HATE the feeling of, ..'being-drink' and/or, being in,
..'Cloud-Cuckoo-Land'
So hence, I know when to....'STOP'.!

Unlike, the..'teenage years'.. :-))

Aye, They've about done in the smokers, so it's time to go after the boozers. They're also making a fair start on the fatties. I suppose we oldies will be the next target....pensions and a' that.

#2 its not scaremongering as i had an uncle die at 28 and a good friend at 32 from bingeing.

How can it be scaremongering. I have heard people from all walks of life boast about their drinking exploits. People are dying younger and suffering from disease caused by excessive alcohol intake.

Riverkidca, the NHS can only sustain so much but if we keep on making ourselves ill then inevitably the money will run out and we will get more rationing. £3bn a year at the moment to treat cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease etc etc from obesity alone should ring alarm bells.

Charles Linskaill

Like you, I but rarely take a drink during the daytime UNLESS it is a VERY special event or birthday party or anniversary party, or whatever.

Reading some of the stories in The Scotsman about the ongoing plague of rapes, murders, muggings, thefts, break-ins, binge-drinking, drug use, children using alcohol and drugs, teenage pregnancy, etc in Scotland - esp. Glasgow and Edinburgh - is enough to send anyone over the brink to alcoholism

I admire you Scots who do not succumb to despair and use the bottle or drugs to forget these social ills.

They are also present in Canada AND Ottawa and there is much money spent to alleviate and solve the problems but they persist and seemingly will NOT go away.

I NEED A DRINK SOONEST AFTER READING WHAT I JUST WROTE!

Um, it's a fairly easy statistic to get your head around. There are more non drinking Muslims (and other non drinking foreign faiths) per head in England as there are in Scotland.
12

Why can't I use my usual name?,

Glasgow 26/01/2008 16:26:27
#11, yes there are more Muslims in England but they're still a small minority and won't make much difference to these figures. Which other "non drinking foreign faiths" might be boosting the numbers to such a degree...?
13

Dave from Barra ©,

Westrn Isles 26/01/2008 16:41:31
12

Yes they will make a big difference to the figures.

There are several non drinking foreign faiths, you not able to find them on the t'internet?

In the eyes of the spoilsport, sactimonious nannies, "Alcohol related illess" follows exactly the same principles as "tobacco smoke related illness". In other words, if you can get an illness from either alcohol or tobacco consumption, they assume that EVERY case of the illness is due to alcohol or tobacco consumption.

Clearly this is rubbish.

Whist there may be some genuine cases of people shortening their lives through excessive consumption of alcohol (as cited by fife runner), there are far too many other cases associated and lumped together for the purpose of propaganda.

We've already been subject to the lie of "passive smoking". The way we are going, we're going to get "passive drinking" next.

The world (and especially Britain) is going mad.

Scots alcohol death rate twice that of UK
------------------------------------------

If true , that is very sad.

As for Scots being depressed, as the reason for these alcohol deaths.

WRONG "Its the weather stupid".

Dark Skies, Cold , Rain, Wind, day in day out will make any person depressed.

Blue Skies, Little rain , No Cold, 321 days Sunshine has the opposite effect dudes.

Alcohol (in extreme) is just one way to escape your desolate weather.

On my last visit to St.Andrews the wind was a near gale force, and when we went inside to have pint in that Hotel facing the golf course . We paid £4 a pint.

Here in Southern Cal. we get a Pint of IPA (Long Hammer) 6.5% Alc, by Vol. for $$2.50/$3.00 (£1.25/(£1.50).

Happy Haggis Day

Well, it's good evening now! A cultured chap like me never drinks before 9pm, so I'm off to the estaminet in a short while.

It's scaremongering, just like 'passive smoking', 'obesity' and whatever scare story happens also to be trendy just now.
The NHS was founded on the false premise that full employment would be achieved to pay for it all. It never has. Bevan also never foresaw the day when people would play on the welfare state and get away with it.
Instead of facing up to those facts and modernising it in some way, the union dinosaurs and their supporters are STILL kidding themselves about our NHS being the envy of the free world. It might still have been 30 years ago, but certainly not now.

At the risk of stating the obvious, is it perhaps that overall consumption per head is less here, but within that amorphous mass there is a hard core of dedicated drinkers, and these are the unfortunates who push up the death rate so dramatically?

'Scots alcohol death rate twice that of UK'

Scotland is part of the UK...

So does the UK figure include Scotland?

#19 DaveSubsea - approx calculation as under, I think:
Population Deaths
UK 60m 8758 0.015%
Scotland 5m 1546 0.031%
Eng/Wales 55m 7212 0.013%
