Published Date: 16 July 2008
HEARTS captain Christophe Berra insists he is happy to stay at Tynecastle following the appointment of Csaba Laszlo as manager.
Berra looked like he may have been on his way out of Edinburgh when Wolves launched a £1.5million bid to sign the defender early in the close season, but Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has now declared his interest is over after Hearts said he was not
for sale.

The 23-year-old defender is now looking forward to the season ahead with Hearts after being encouraged by his first impressions of Laszlo, the former Ferencvaros and Uganda manager.

"The new manager has laid down his guidelines," said Berra. "I have been impressed with him and am looking forward to the season starting. He hasn't been here long but he knows how he wants us to play, how he wants us to work and he's also high on discipline and work ethic. I've got a good feeling about the appointment. I have been impressed with him and I'm sure he can help improve me as an individual and take the team forward."

Berra, who has also been linked with Celtic and Rangers, added: "There has been a lot of paper talk but I am happy here just now. I want to win things and be successful but on a personal level I need to look after myself and want to keep improving.

"If I make mistakes, I want to be guided in the right direction as to how to improve on my weaknesses and hopefully the new manager can do that. I am happy in Edinburgh with Hearts and the fact we have a manager in place working on the team on a daily basis is a big factor for me. The early signs look good."

Berra missed Monday night's Umbro Cup game against Glentoran in Belfast, which Hearts lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw, but hopes to return for tonight's pre-season friendly against Dunfermline at East End Park. "I have done all the hard work through the first few weeks of pre-season but hurt my ankle a few days ago in training," said the Scotland international. "I'll just have to give it a bit of a rest and can get back into things shortly. I hope to be able to be involved against Dunfermline tomorrow, but I'll just have to wait and see how things go."

Wolves manager McCarthy, below, has now admitted defeat in his attempt to lure Berra to Molineux. He said: "I'm still hopeful of getting another (player]. We had a bid in for Berra but that deal is dead. It won't be done at all. Hearts are saying he won't be going anywhere so I've moved on. There are no other bids in. For the moment, the deal is dead as far as I'm concerned and we're looking elsewhere. Who we get, I don't know. It might be that someone comes from completely out of the blue from somewhere which has never been mentioned."

It had been suggested Berra would initiate a move away from Gorgie by handing in a transfer request, but it is understood the highly-rated centre-half is not considering such an option. Berra was one of the first players to be introduced to Laszlo following his appointment and was impressed with his vision for Hearts.

Meanwhile, Laszlo was largely satisfied with his new team's display in his first game in Belfast on Monday. However, the Romanian-born Hungarian is looking to bring in "two or three" new signings before the SPL season begins.

"After ten minutes, you see positions where you have a weakness, where the team doesn't move correctly," he said. "After ten minutes, you see directly whether the players have confidence or not, whether they want the ball or want to take a step back because they don't like to make a mistake. We have a very big squad, but I think it's necessary in two or three positions to get players with experience."

The Hearts manager also aims to ensure his new side become the top team in Edinburgh by virtue of an improved work ethic. "Nobody sleeps in professional football," he said. "We must work harder, maybe be more concentrated. If the team is spending eight hours at the training ground just now, then we must spend ten hours there. This is just what we must do.

"I have a German and Hungarian background, I can mix creativity with discipline and innovation. In this job you have pressure in every game. Hearts is the oldest team in Edinburgh and firstly we must be number one in Edinburgh. The second wish I have for this season is to get back into European football."

Not a mammoth fan of Berra, so this story is a bit "meh".

Just wanted to be the first who commented though. It's a change that a Jambo gets to do so on a Jambo story.

Ok, I've said my piece. Let the hibs 0 fans speak........!

#2 - super attempt to wind us up.

try and find a Hearts fan who wanted him to stay for that price. When you do - sell him some magic beans.

In comparison - would you be happy if Steven Smith was sold for £4 million?

#6 - Ryan McGowan in a heartbeat, or Rapnik or even McGowan's wee brother who by all accounts is an even better player than him.

Give me a critique of each please you soccer expert.

I'm not so sure the critisism of Berra is Justified here. This is a young fella who has been forced to shoulder the responsibility of club captain and has forced his way into the national set up without the help of any kind of proper management structure. This new fella at hearts could be the tonic he needs to move forward as the player I for one think he is capable of becoming...

Good luck to him cos Scotland needs young defenders.

Good to see that Laszlo knows this early on that the best way to get the Hearts fans on side with him is to make sure he stuffs the Hibees.

#11 - well said, but maybe the captaincy is a bridge too far for him at the moment. He needs to concentrate more on his own game first, and as you say, under a proper manager there's potential there for him to get much better than he is.

If Laszlo can do what Souness did at Rangers, and bring in a player who can command instant & undisputed respect from the players (as Souness brought Terry Butcher in) then the captaincy burden can maybe be passed on without too much difficulty or unrest.

Pundit Clueless
Berra is getting better and better
He was hindered by the captaincy last season although he would have learned a lot from it
With a settled coach and a settled back four around him including a settled keeper he will be a much better player this year
One of the youngsters i expect to impress this season

Mikey Stewart has also stated that Laszlo has impressed the players.
There will of course, be a couple in the squad who have every reason to worry.
I think the idea of bringing in a "Terry Butcher" type of character is a good one.
Christoff would benefit from not having to shoulder the burden of captaincy.
Hppy that BErra is staying, I think if he improves again this season, we will get top dollar for him.
Because...he will be sold.

The lad will be good IMO like i say i dont think the constant team changes helped along with goalie changes.
A settled back four, confidence and a bit of guidance and i am expecting a lot from Berra this year

A captain is a manager on the field. I don't think Berra is. He is undoubtedly a talented player but not a captain. Pressley was a captain. You knew he was in charge.
In the present squad is there one. First of all he has to gain the respect of the other players and get them to listen to him. He has to direct operations on the field, he has to encourage the team. Most importantly although enthusiastic he has to control his emotions and avoid getting yellow/red cards through over exuberance. The age is irrelevant we have had young captains in the past. I try to think of present squad and who would be good enough. Mikey Stewart is too over the top, I think. What about Bruno if he can command a regular place or young Jonnson.

huggs,

16/07/2008 09:28:50
20 AJ Dont think there is a captain amongst them
That may change though maybe he has someone in mind
Berra could do without it IMO
16

Who?,

16/07/2008 09:40:00
At the beginning of last season Berra looked to be struggling with the Captaincy. As the season wore on he improved alot, this was partly due to stewart not playing as much (less agro) and berra having a steady centre back partner (karipidis).

Given the proper training and a good, reliable partner at centre back Berra will do really well this season. In the last two seasons he has been asked to shoulder far too much responsability while other players who you would expect to contribute has been posted missing.

IJ,

Can I have some of those magic beans please? I think he will go more than £2mil if he waits a year.

Although I understand you are not a fan i think personaly he has been hampered by lack of structure and coaching at the club.

His raw abilities of very good pace and good strength alone make him easily a good prospect for the future.

I think with the right coaching we will have at least a 3mil defender.

I do however agree that he needs to improve but at 23 I am confident that that will happen.

I do also agree however that we apear to be rather sorted for up and coming young players in that position, Rapnik and McGowan being the ones that i have seen (although in a limited capacity) and been impressed with... Just don't think we are in a position just yet to sell someone for 1.5 mil less than they are probably going to worth.

Berra's class - a technically gifted and composed CB much more in the style of a European defender. I think people don't rate him because he's not imposing enough and therefore don't see him as a captain.
As a player though he is one of our best and I think will be the first choice for Scotland in a few years (IMHO obviously).
He would probably benefit from a more ruthless partner who would throw himself at everything while Berra cleans up and distributes.

I notice there is no message board tagged on to the Velicka story - so I'll tag it on here.

Wonder if he'll still be branded by Chico, Walker, Provan, Smith, etc, as a cheating Lith that should be drummed out of Scottish football?

Yeh, you're right silly question!!

as far as im aware berra has never said he wanted to leave. So far his only statment has been he wants to stay.
so you base your statment on what? wishful thinking? It looked like he wanted away? youd prefer it if he wanted away?
