Published Date: 02 July 2008
HEARTS have ran out of patience with Mauricio Pinilla after terminating the wayward Chilean internationalist's three-year contract. The Tynecastle club invoked a clause in the 24 year-old's deal to release him after two-injury ravaged years in Gorgie.
Pinilla recently worked on his fitness in Lithuania where he was a guest of Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov but the club have now severed all ties with the marksman following a contractual dispute.

In an interview with Chilean newspaper Las Ultimas
Noticias the striker claimed the club changed the goalposts on an agreed contract and lamented the fact he had been assigned what he called a "diet policeman".

Pinilla said: "I signed for three years but Hearts had the option to end the contract up until 30 June. They told me recently they wanted to change something in my contract and I wouldn't accept the changes.

"I had spoken with Hearts' directors, and the owner wanted to double my salary. But then the official concerned with players' contracts turned up at our training camp in Lithuania. I read my documents and saw that important changes had been made.

"They were now offering me just 25 per cent of what we agreed, and they would see about the rest during the season.

"Had they put this to me from the outset then fair enough, but instead they did it at the eleventh hour. I was not prepared to play for them under such conditions.

"They also wanted me to live with a guy a bit like a personal trainer. He would be a diet policeman, who inspected what I had to eat from breakfast all the way through to dinner. I was supposed to have this guy at my side every day. You can't live like this."

He added: "I was very happy in Edinburgh because the Hearts supporters always told me they wanted me to play, that I was a good player. They seemed to like me but it's difficult when you only play eight games in two years.

"I spent a lot of time injured at Hearts and I was preparing to play the games next season. I feel sorry that I did not play more. I would have liked to show the people my ability but I can't now."

Pinilla initially joined Hearts on loan from Sporting Lisbon in summer 2006 before Hearts bought out the Portuguese outfit's half stake in his playing rights. The South American was then sent on loan to Universidad de Chile back in his homeland in February 2007.

When he signed his three-year deal in May, it's thought Hearts became outright owners of Pinilla by buying out Inter Milan's stake in the player.

During his two-year stint at Hearts, the player made just eight first team appearances and scored two goals.

Pinilla was also treated for depression at a private psychiatric clinic in Spain during his spell in the capital, with Romanov reportedly footing the bill.

However, the striker believes he won't encounter any problems finding a new club.

He said: "My fitness is okay. I was in Lithuania to do some special work but not with the football. I'm ready for the start of the season and I'm looking for a new club. I have three or four options in countries like Portugal and Italy so I am waiting for confirmation. I will meet my agent in Italy to discuss it."

Will Vladimir foot the bill for my depression treatment? As for the "Diet Policeman"...why has this fella not got Nade under house arrest?

Apparently Nade is objecting to the clause that says the entire "Diet C.I.A" must be with him at all time.

We are a fickle bunch us Hearts supporters. Not long ago we were berating Romanov for giving Pinilla the time of day as he hadnt performed....then I notice yesterday we were complaining that he had got rid of him???

My take on the article (which may be wrong) is that Pinilla discovered that his £12,000 a week wasnt quite that but was in fact £3,000 a week plus appearance and win bonuses potentially making the £12,000 figure. This would tie in with previous statements that Hearts were realligning their pay strategy to be more performance based. Personally I am all for that. If Mauricio doesnt like it......then he is clearly not willing to put in the required amount of effort so I am glad he is going. After all, there comes a stage where you have to cut your losses and run.

I think that the only people will notice the difference will be the potentials WAGs of Edinburgh as the Chilean stallion will be strutting his stuff in another city. Hearts supporters certainly won't miss him. Great talent but a total waste of money.

2 journalists and between them they write "Hearts have ran". Tell me, what skills do you need to work for the scotsman nowadays? Is having a basic grasp of the English language no longer a prerequisite?

Re-arrange this to make a complete English sentence if you can: you are a shower of chancers freaking.

#3. I don't think it was as clear cut as you suggest. I for one and know many others felt similar that Pinilla had a great deal of talent, and given Romanov had spent so much of HMFC money on him, he should get an opportunity to show what he could do.

I was more concerned that from the £12,000 a week reportedly coming out of HMFC coffers for Pinilla, how much was being paid direct to him and how much to the agents that held his contract and who it was that held his contract.
11

Hysterical Jambow,

02/07/2008 08:47:23
Only thing that is frustrating about Romanov currently is the lack of a manager.

This type of thing is, unfortunately, only good for the club. Get rid of all the high earning waste of spaces.

POTENTIAL to be a cracking player, but premanently injured. All fans please bear in mind it was all still POTENTIAL!!! He hadn't proven to be a quality player yet.

Guess we will find out in the next few seasons how good he really is, wonder if Rangers will try and buy him now...

Romanov, will you hurry up and apoint this damn manager? Once this is in place most annoyed fans will be satisfied for a few months.
12

SouthSideHibs,

02/07/2008 09:00:20
#12 - i think you need to try and understand that you won't be appointing a manager in the traditional sense. Successive candidates have knocked Vlad back as they don't agree with his ideas or principles, nor do they want to take orders from Lithuania.
13

Jambo-ree,

02/07/2008 09:09:24
You can't miss what you've never had and while I think Pinilla undoubtedly had talent, 8 games in two years is no return on investment at all. Interestng he wasn't up for the performance pay concept and think that says it all about him.

It does make you wonder though just who is going to be scoring the goals for us next season. ANOTHER midfielder being signed? Not really a priority IMHO.

#9 - You're right but when you read the full sentence it's even worse "Hearts have ran out of patience with Mauricio Pinilla after terminating the wayward Chilean internationalist's three-year contract."

AFTER terminating it? I'd have thought the patience ran out BEFORE? What it really should read is "HEARTS have run out of patience with Mauricio Pinilla, terminating the wayward Chilean internationalist's three-year contract."

4/10 Could do better.

"They were now offering me just 25 per cent of what we agreed, and they would see about the rest during the season.

This was reported months ago- that his contract would be similar in value but much more performance-based.

About the diet police etc- I believe Pinilla needed a pretty strict regime of training and everything, as he's obviously a bit wayward.

We'll never know but what are the bets he'd have had another wayward season?

We've cut our losses with a complete chancer IMO

The 25% and review thing was a good idea i feel, why should anyone be rewarded for doing nothing? Pinilla has been milking our club since he signed so should have just accepted the wage structure and then forced romanov to pay the difference by playing well and scoring goals. the only problem is he has now left for nothing so should we be happy at getting rid of his silly wages off the books or should we be unhappy that we didnt get a chance to sell him on.

either way it no longer matters

if he isn't too happy about having a diet policeman monitoring his diet then maybe he should have progressed from being an unresponsible child and taken responsibility for keeping himself fit enough to be able to play professional football. if the guy wasn't able to eat the right things and live the correct lifestyle then he has to expect his superiors to make these choices for him.

alas he seems to still be some way off from adulthood in that regard, some other mugs will have to look after him now.

also, he obviously had no desire to earn his money by achieving the results which would have seen him get his full pay in the way of bonuses. this idea of empowering the players to earn (in the true sense of the word) their bonuses will sort out the triers from the non-triers.

pinilla obviously simply wanted the 'full whack' without having to make any effort to earn it.

on that basis, hell mend him.

It shows a new realisim at Tynie with repect to all financial outgoings.
Vlad is going to try and ride the credit cruunch/ recession/ inability of the business to service its debts.
We've seen it with the Arbroath bill, the payments due in lieu of contracts and some of the quieter redundancies at HQ and Pinilla is just more of the same
He'll be looking to get more players on cheaper deals too and that is backed up by some of the leaks we've been hearing from Riccarton
Cash flow is a chink in his armour and believe it or not he needs the fans now more than ever.
Yes Vlad needs the fans - but he'll never admit it.
So if we turn off the cash fountain his plans and ownership will collapse.
STOP SPENDING
Don't buy merchandise, don't buy the season tickets and if you have don't spend at the ground on food, programmes, and even Jambo Jackpots.
Support the team away from home and let him know why.

It's a real scunner that Pinilla has left as the SPL is crying out for players of his calibre.

I thought that a 4-4-2 formation with Pinilla and Nade would have worked well, or even a 4-5-1 with Pinilla playing as the sole attacker would have been good.

Vlad has been pulling out of , or trying to change contracts at the eleventh hour (as in the article) since he arrived here. No more so than right now. Certain parties including the council are totally pi55ed off at him for playing funny bu66ers with contracts regarding the fruition of his expansion/building plans.
Every time the involved "sides" come to an agreement Vlad tries to squeeze things just before pen is put to paper. He cannot understand that corporate dealings in Lithuania and Russia are different to the UK. (usually)
If he does not play ball very soon - do not look for the stand and offshoots being started anywhere near this time next year - if at all.
If you think he is being obtuse with managers - wait until any of his attempts at business dealings in Edinburgh leak out.
(before you ask - the guy I sit beside at Tynie works for the council planning dept.)

"In 2004 he became the manager of the team, most notably leading it to the UEFA Cup 2005-06 quarter final stage and becoming the first Bulgarian club to ever reach the group stage of the UEFA Champions League during the 2006-07 season. He has also led the team to winning the national cup in 2005 and 2007 ,Bulgarian Supercup in 2005 and 2007 and the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 national championship."

But I see he has in fact been a caretaker manager before so he'll fit right in.
